The four biggest August 2025 releases
Final Destination Bloodlines — August 1
The sixth Final Destination film made its global streaming debut exclusively on HBO Max on Friday, August 1, 2025. Kaitlyn Santa Juana plays Stefani, a college student haunted by a violent recurring nightmare. She returns home and seeks help from her grandmother Iris—the one person who may know how to break the cycle threatening their family.
The cast also includes Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Rya Kihlstedt, Brec Bassinger, and Tony Todd. For horror fans, this was the clearest first choice of the month. HBO Max also promoted access to all six films in the franchise, making August 1 a natural starting point for a complete rewatch.
HBO was also scheduled to air a Final Destination marathon on August 2, followed by an 8 p.m. ET television presentation of Bloodlines. If you would rather own the film than rely on changing streaming availability, check current listings for Final Destination Bloodlines DVD or Blu-ray editions. Format, seller, price, and stock can vary.
Freaky Tales — August 8
Freaky Tales began streaming exclusively on HBO Max in the United States on Friday, August 8. Set in 1987 Oakland, the film follows several intersecting stories involving an NBA star, a corrupt police officer, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector.
Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and Tom Hanks lead the cast. Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden wrote and directed the film. Its connected-story structure and period Oakland setting make it the month’s most distinctive choice for viewers looking for a stylized crime-action movie rather than a conventional franchise sequel.

Not every film below was a new HBO or Max Original. The schedule mixed new-to-the-service films, library titles, and network or licensed programming. That distinction matters: a catalog addition can be just as useful for choosing a movie night, but it is not the same as a streaming premiere.

- Watch The Legend of Ochi for a creature-focused fantasy adventure.
- Save a weekly slot for Peacemaker season 2 if you prefer an ongoing superhero series over a film.
- Pick The Yogurt Shop Murders, The Case Against Diddy, or The Idaho Murders for documentary and true-crime viewing.
- Try Hard Knocks or Deadliest Catch for unscripted access to sports or high-risk working environments.
What “new on HBO Max” means here
This list is about the announced U.S. HBO Max schedule for August 2025, not a promise of current availability. Streaming rights can expire, titles can move between services, and regional catalogs can differ. The official Warner Bros. Discovery announcement also noted that its list could change and might not include every catalog update. A secondary report counted 59 new movies and 32 new television titles, but the official dated slate remains the better guide for the specific arrivals listed here.
Because August 2025 has passed, check the current HBO Max listing before planning a watch party or assuming that a title is still included. The same caution applies to physical-media editions: DVD, Blu-ray, 4K UHD, steelbook, seller, price, and stock may all differ from the original August release window.
