A documentary screened in Bangkok on 7 October 2026 traces a link between Indonesian palm-oil plantations and South Korean biofuel demand, while warning of risks to forests and the people who depend on them. The screening was part of Bangkok Climate Action Week’s “Forests at the Frontline of Asia’s Energy Transition” session. Its concerns are not proof that every biofuel shipment causes deforestation, but they focus attention on how feedstock demand can shape land use.
What the Bangkok screening covered
The 7 October 2026 session was organized by Solutions for Our Climate (SFOC), with Global Environment Forum (GEF) as collaborator. The programme framed the discussion around bioenergy expansion, deforestation, biodiversity loss and threats to local livelihoods. Republika reported that SFOC’s documentary follows biofuel expansion from Indonesian palm-oil plantations to rising demand in South Korea.
A separate GEF documentary screened alongside it. Republika described that film as addressing forest biomass and energy plantations in Indonesia. The two films therefore covered related but distinct subjects; the event’s session title, “Forests at the Frontline of Asia’s Energy Transition,” is not a separately confirmed title for the SFOC film. Republika’s coverage and the event programme describe the screening.
How South Korean demand connects to Indonesian palm oil
The supply-chain link presented by the SFOC film runs from demand for biofuel in South Korea to palm oil and its derivatives as feedstock, with production tied to plantations in Indonesia. A feedstock is the raw material used to make fuel. The documentary’s focus highlights why a fuel’s effects cannot be understood from its end use alone: the source of the feedstock and the land used to produce it also matter.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Industry.co.id reported that SFOC’s 2024 report, “Behind Korea’s Biofuels: Sustainability Risks in Indonesia–Korea Palm Oil Supply Chains,” found palm oil and its derivatives accounted for 72% of South Korea’s biodiesel feedstock in 2024, four times the 2015 level. That figure refers specifically to biodiesel feedstock—not all biofuel or all bioenergy in South Korea. The underlying SFOC report was not directly available for review, and the reported source does not establish the precise denominator or calculation method, so the number should be read with that qualification. Industry.co.id’s report of SFOC’s findings provides the attribution.
Why plantations raise forest and community concerns
The event’s stated concerns included deforestation, biodiversity loss and harm to local livelihoods. Republika identified Marihel Parda Winda, SFOC’s Forest and Land Use Program Officer and a documentary participant, as raising concern about forests being replaced by monoculture plantations—large areas planted with a single crop.

“Communities lose so many things provided by forests, from biodiversity and livelihoods to the various functions that sustain their lives.”
This is a close English rendering of Winda’s statement as published in Indonesian by Republika, not a separately verified official translation. Her point is that forests can provide more than habitat: they also support livelihoods and functions communities rely on. The screening coverage raises these as risks and stakes; it does not establish that every palm-oil-linked biofuel shipment caused a particular instance of forest conversion.

What the screening does—and does not—establish
The films and panel put questions about feedstock, land use and local impacts into the discussion of Asia’s energy transition. They do not, on the available reporting, establish a lifecycle-emissions comparison among biofuel pathways or prove that biofuel has the same environmental effects regardless of how it is made. Relevant factors for evaluating a pathway include the feedstock, the land’s prior use, whether new plantation expansion is involved, supply-chain traceability and lifecycle emissions. The available coverage does not provide comparative data to rank options on those measures.
The event listing and news coverage confirm a screening in Bangkok, but do not establish a public streaming link, physical release or distribution schedule. Viewers should not assume the film is available to watch online based on the screening announcement alone.
