The 2026 call for the Thessaloniki Film Festival’s AGORA Docs in Progress closes on November 25, 2026. It is open to documentary features over 60 minutes and documentary series, including hybrid, animated, essay and other experimental forms. Applicants must submit an English-language online application with a secure link to at least 25 minutes of selected film excerpts or scenes. The event is scheduled for March 6–11, 2027, with online meetings on March 12.
What is AGORA Docs in Progress?
AGORA Docs in Progress is a Thessaloniki Film Festival program for documentary projects close to completion. It presents selected work to buyers, co-producers, festival representatives and sales agents. The festival plans to select 8–10 projects for the 2026 call.
The dates published for the program are March 6–11, 2027, in Thessaloniki, followed by online meetings on March 12. The call opened September 18, 2026; the submission deadline is November 25, 2026. The festival plans to notify applicants in mid-January 2027 and hold a preparatory online workshop at the end of January. See the official AGORA Docs in Progress call for any updates.
Who and what may apply?
Eligible formats and projects
The program accepts original documentary feature projects over 60 minutes and documentary series. It welcomes creative and television documentaries, episodic documentaries, documentaries for children, hybrid documentaries, essay films, animation, non-narrative work and interdisciplinary projects. The call seeks projects with artistic ambition and high visual quality. AGORA XR Lab alumni may also submit projects at prototype or final-production stage through the route described on the call page.

Regional connection
Projects produced or co-produced by a country in the listed regions, or whose stories connect to those regions, are sought. The eligible countries named on the page are Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kosovo*, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Morocco, North Macedonia, Palestine, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and Ukraine.
The call says projects from outside these countries may also apply and will be evaluated by the selection committee. The asterisk after Kosovo is accompanied by the festival’s status disclaimer, which refers to UNSCR 1244/1999 and the International Court of Justice Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.

What is the application process?
- Submit the online form in English by November 25, 2026. Use the AGORA Docs in Progress application form linked from the official call page.
- Provide a secure viewing link. Include at least 25 minutes of selected excerpts or scenes from the film. Application materials and subtitles should be in English.
- Complete the form carefully before submitting. The festival says the form cannot be changed after submission and that elements may be used for communications if the project is selected.
- Disclose prior and pending applications. List previous workshop and market participation, including dates, and identify pending applications. If the project has not been presented before, state that.
- Check the producer or company limit. A production company or producer may submit up to two projects.
The excerpt is the main evidence the selection committee has of the project’s visual approach, since the festival says selection depends chiefly on the quality of the submitted material. Make sure the application also makes the project’s regional connection and production context clear.
How are projects selected?
The selection committee considers the quality of the submitted visual material, which must include at least 25 minutes, along with the film’s artistic elements and themes. The director’s and company’s track records are additional factors. The organizers also aim for a balance of countries, regions, genders and themes among selected projects.

The committee includes the AGORA team, the Greek Film Festival’s Program team and an international selection committee. The festival says the final selection is made by the international committee and Head of AGORA in accordance with festival administration.
What happens if a project is selected?
Workshop and attendance
Director(s) and producer(s) are called to a mandatory online preparatory workshop in late January. It includes pitching training and feedback on excerpts for online use and the live presentation. At least one representative must attend the full event period.

Accommodation, travel and presentation clip
The program offers five nights of accommodation. If both the director and producer attend, the festival can cover one double room for them to share. It may reimburse part of project-team travel expenses against receipts; the call does not specify a fixed reimbursement amount.
After feedback, project holders are asked to prepare a 12-minute clip of film excerpts, with English subtitles, for presentation preparation and consultation. The festival specifies that this should be a clip of excerpts, not a trailer or promotional reel.

Credit requirement for finished films
Finished projects presented at AGORA Docs in Progress must include the program logo in their credits. The festival preferably requests a specific credit sentence naming the film, festival edition and year; consult the current call page for the exact wording.

How to apply for the Eurimages New Lab Award – Outreach
Applicants seeking this award must include one PDF in the application containing all of the following:
- A conceptual note by the director or visual artist, or a video-pitch link, explaining the work’s innovative, non-conventional and experimental nature and its new forms of expression.
- An international audience outreach strategy that goes beyond traditional distribution channels.
- The anticipated use of the award and its impact on the project’s completion and outreach.
- A project description, treatment or script.
- Previous works, where applicable.
- A financing plan and budget.
The festival also instructs applicants to download, complete and upload the Eurimages exclusion criteria declaration. Check the official call page for the required form and current submission details.
Is this call a fit for your project?
Before applying, check that the project meets the format requirement, has a meaningful connection to the regions sought, and is ready to be represented by at least 25 minutes of strong visual material. You will also need an English-language application and subtitles, and the capacity for a director or producer representative to attend the mandatory workshop and full event. The festival accepts applications from outside the listed countries, so geography alone does not rule out a submission.
