Spoilers for the full film. Jin-ho is the person deliberately making the noises that torment Woo-sung. He uses a revenge speaker and manipulates the building’s systems to steer what residents hear, frame Woo-sung, and pursue revenge against Eun-hwa. The final noise Woo-sung hears after returning to Seoul is different: the film does not identify a new culprit, leaving its literal source unresolved.
Who was making the noise?
Jin-ho, Woo-sung’s upstairs neighbor and a freelance journalist, is the immediate cause of the noises. TIME says he plants an “inter-floor revenge speaker” in Woo-sung’s apartment and rigs the building to observe and influence residents. The Indian Express describes him using hacked intercoms to play sounds inside people’s homes. The accounts differ in their emphasis on the equipment, but agree that Jin-ho deliberately manipulates what residents hear. TIME and The Indian Express both identify him as the scheme’s operator.

Why did Jin-ho target Woo-sung?
Woo-sung is caught in Jin-ho’s revenge plot against Eun-hwa, a former prosecutor whom TIME says obstructed Jin-ho’s reporting about poor construction. Jin-ho uses noise complaints and a staged accusation from residents below to make Woo-sung look responsible. Woo-sung is detained and misses a financial opportunity he hoped would help him clear his debts.
That pressure is central to the story. Netflix’s announcement describes Woo-sung using savings, stock investments and loans—and even his mother’s garlic farm—to buy his apartment, only to struggle with high-interest payments. The film’s Korean title, 84 Square Meter, refers, according to Netflix, to the most common apartment size in South Korea. Netflix’s premiere announcement

How does Woo-sung uncover the scheme?
Woo-sung discovers the speaker’s connection to Jin-ho and finds material showing that Jin-ho has been surveilling residents. But learning that he has been manipulated does not end the danger: Woo-sung and Jin-ho confront Eun-hwa at her penthouse.
What happens in the penthouse?
In TIME’s account, Jin-ho kills Eun-hwa’s husband, Eun-hwa stabs Jin-ho, and then turns on Woo-sung. Jin-ho gets back up after appearing dead and kills Eun-hwa. As Jin-ho is dying, he demands that Woo-sung use a ledger as evidence. Woo-sung refuses, burns the ledger and related papers, and the penthouse explodes. He survives.

Why does Woo-sung hear noise again at the end?
After recovering with his mother in the countryside, Woo-sung returns to his empty Seoul apartment. He hears noise again and laughs. The film does not reveal another named person making it: Jin-ho and Eun-hwa are gone, and the final sound’s literal source is not specified in the cited ending accounts.
TIME and The Indian Express read the repeated noise thematically, not as proof of a second perpetrator. Their interpretations connect it to the ongoing friction of apartment life and to the strain of debt, ambition and trying to move up through housing. This leaves two distinct answers: Jin-ho explains the deliberate noises in the plot, while the last sound works as an unresolved echo of the pressures surrounding Woo-sung.

How apartment life shapes the film’s theme
The story’s housing context gives that final ambiguity weight. TIME reports that the state-run Center for Neighbors’ Relations recorded 8,795 inter-apartment noise complaints in 2012 and 36,435 in 2023, citing a 2024 Korea JoongAng Daily article. Those figures describe complaints in South Korea, not the cause of the film’s final sound. TIME’s ending explainer
TIME also quotes Eun-hwa saying, “Noise between floors is a human problem. Why blame the building?” That is dialogue from the film, not a factual explanation of every sound in Woo-sung’s apartment. In the same article, anthropology professor Jung Heon-mok describes apartments in Korea as a middle-class housing model promoted as a symbol of modernization, noting that stand-up kitchens and flush toilets were introduced to Koreans in apartments. So the ending does not overturn the reveal or identify a new noise-maker. It moves from a concrete scheme—Jin-ho’s deliberate manipulation—to a broader, unresolved sound that can be read as the continuing pressure and conflict of close-packed urban life.
