Netflix formally announced a broader TV experience on May 7, 2025, and said in its January 2026 shareholder letter that the redesigned experience had rolled out during 2025. The exact interface can still differ by device, account and region.
The short version
- The familiar left-side sidebar was replaced in the tested design by prominent top navigation.
- Highlighted title cards can expand or reveal more information instead of remaining static tiles.
- Search and My List receive more visible positions.
- The homepage can show context such as awards and ranking labels beside recommendations.
- Netflix says recommendations should respond more quickly to a member’s current interests.
- The rollout is not proof that every television, streaming box or country has an identical interface.
What Netflix tested in June 2024
The original report described a selected-user test of a redesigned Netflix TV homepage on platforms including Apple TV 4K, Chromecast and smart TVs. In that version, the left-side pop-out menu was replaced by a top navigation bar. Reported destinations included Search, Home, Shows, Movies and My Netflix. ([9to5Mac])
Title tiles also became interactive. When a viewer rested the remote cursor on a tile, it expanded rather than staying a static rectangle. Netflix told The Verge it hoped to roll the design out more broadly, but the announcement described a test, not universal availability.
How the later TV experience developed
Netflix’s May 7, 2025 announcement described a more developed product than the early test. The company said the homepage would surface more title information directly, including examples such as “Emmy Award Winner” and “#1 in TV Shows.” Search and My List were moved to more prominent positions at the top, while recommendations were intended to react more rapidly to what a member might want “in the moment.” ([Netflix])

Netflix’s January 2026 shareholder letter said the redesigned TV experience rolled out in 2025. That establishes a broad rollout, not synchronized behavior on every Netflix-compatible device worldwide. ([Netflix Q4 2025 shareholder letter])
Old and newer layouts: what changes for viewers

Why Netflix changed the interface
Netflix says the cleaner, more modern structure should make the service easier to use, surface compelling titles sooner and remain flexible as its entertainment offering expands across shows, films and games. ([Netflix])
There is also a practical merchandising reason. The TV homepage is Netflix’s main discovery surface. Showing an award, ranking or other explanation next to a title may reduce the number of clicks needed before a viewer decides what to play. Moving navigation to the top makes destinations visible without opening a side panel, although that also makes the design resemble navigation patterns used by other streaming services.

What “responsive recommendations” means
Netflix is describing a presentation goal, not promising a perfect or entirely new recommendation algorithm. The idea is that the homepage can adjust how it organizes and explains suggestions as a member’s interests change. Netflix has not supplied a public benchmark showing that the redesign produces more accurate recommendations.

An expanding card that adds only animation is different from one that exposes information you actually need.
Potential advantages
- Faster discovery: More title context can appear before you open a details page.
- Visible shortcuts: Search and My List are easier to locate than inside a side panel.
- Less menu hunting: Top-level destinations remain in view while browsing.
- Stronger context: Awards and rankings may help undecided viewers choose.
- Room to evolve: Netflix says the new structure gives it more flexibility for future additions.
These are Netflix’s intended benefits, not independently measured improvements in speed or satisfaction.

Potential drawbacks
- Expanding cards can feel distracting when the remote pauses briefly over a title.
- More motion and promotional labels may make the screen feel busier.
- People who know the old sidebar must relearn basic navigation.
- Larger cards do not automatically make browsing faster; they can consume more space and require additional movement.
- Viewers who dislike autoplay-style behavior or changing focus states may prefer the predictability of the old layout.
These concerns are user-experience analysis and commentary, not Netflix-confirmed defects. ([9to5Mac])
Is this the same as Clips or Netflix’s AI search?
No. Netflix’s TV homepage redesign should not be confused with its mobile experiments.

On April 30, 2026, Netflix announced a redesigned mobile experience with Clips, a vertical feed of short video material intended to help people discover shows, films or games. Netflix’s later country expansion included Brazil, France, Germany, Korea and Mexico, so availability is geography-dependent. The announcement describes Clips as a phone feature, not a TV-homepage function. ([Netflix mobile announcement])

Conversational search was an iOS experiment
Netflix said in May 2025 that it was exploring a small, opt-in iOS beta in which members could make natural-language requests such as wanting something “funny and upbeat.” That does not mean every subscriber has an AI search tool, and it does not establish that the feature is available on TV. The 2024 test was reported on Apple TV 4K, Chromecast and smart TVs. In practice, Netflix app behavior can vary by operating system, hardware model, app version, account, profile and region. Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Google TV and built-in smart-TV apps may not receive a change at the same time.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
Seeing the new layout on one television does not prove that every device in your home should match it. Conversely, seeing the old layout does not by itself mean the app is broken.
How to tell whether your TV has the redesign
- Open Netflix on the television or streaming device you want to check.
- Look for navigation across the top rather than a menu that opens from the left edge.
- Highlight a title and pause the remote. A newer design may expand the card or reveal additional information.
- Check whether Search and My List are visible near the top of the homepage.
- Update the Netflix app and the device’s system software if updates are available.
- Close and reopen Netflix, or restart the streaming device, if the interface appears only partly updated.
- Compare another device or profile before concluding that something is wrong; rollout and personalization can differ.
- Contact Netflix support if the app crashes, playback fails, menus are missing or the interface is unusable.
Netflix’s public announcements do not describe a universal setting that restores the old TV homepage, so do not expect a permanent rollback switch.
How to evaluate the redesign
- Can you reach Search and My List with fewer, more predictable remote movements?
- Does the extra title information help you decide without opening another page?
- Is the animation readable and tolerable from normal couch distance?
- Does the layout remain clear across profiles and devices in your household?
- Does it reduce time to playback, or encourage more browsing?
Verdict
Netflix’s redesign is a meaningful change to TV discovery and navigation, not proof that every part of the Netflix app was rebuilt. The 2024 announcement covered a limited test; the 2025 announcement described the broader product Netflix says rolled out during 2025. Its value depends on whether visible shortcuts and useful context outweigh expanding cards, motion and promotional clutter for your viewing habits. Judge it by navigation clarity and time to starting a show—not by how modern the homepage looks.
