Trainwreck: Poop Cruise is Netflix’s 2025 documentary about the 2013 Carnival Triumph cruise, where an engine-room fire cut power and propulsion and disrupted basic ship systems, including flushing toilets. What is Trainwreck: Poop Cruise about?
The documentary recounts the Carnival Triumph’s four-day round trip from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel, Mexico, and the crisis that followed a fire aboard the ship. Netflix’s official synopsis describes a voyage involving about 4,000 passengers and crew; that is an approximate total, not a precise passenger count. The title refers to the unsanitary conditions that became a defining part of the incident. The documentary’s premise is not that a plumbing fault began the emergency: the initiating event was a fire, followed by loss of power that disrupted the ship’s systems.
What happened to the Carnival Triumph?
February 10: fire and loss of power
On February 10, 2013, a fire broke out in the Carnival Triumph’s aft engine room. The Bahamas Maritime Authority’s investigation found no direct injuries or fatalities from the fire itself, while noting reports of some minor passenger injuries in the days that followed. The fire left the ship without power and propulsion. Netflix’s synopsis says the outage affected refrigeration, lighting, air-conditioning and the flushing toilets. As described by passengers and crew in the documentary and in TIME’s release-day coverage, people faced hot cabins, disrupted meals, makeshift sanitation and limited communications. February 14: arrival in Mobile
The Triumph was towed to Mobile, Alabama, where it arrived at the Alabama Cruise Terminal on February 14, 2013, and passengers disembarked. The National Transportation Safety Board’s brief confirms those dates as background to a different investigation: the ship’s later breakaway accident in April 2013. Was Poop Cruise really Netflix’s No. 1 movie?

The film and reporting provide participant accounts of life aboard during the outage. Read together, those sources explain both the mechanical disruption and why passengers remember the voyage for its sanitation crisis; they are different kinds of evidence, not interchangeable accounts.
