Kim Kardashian’s booed entrance, Tom Brady’s pointed response to a joke about Robert Kraft, and Kevin Hart’s crack about Gisele Bündchen supplied some of the night’s most uncomfortable beats. These are five editorial picks from Netflix’s May 5, 2024 live roast—not an official ranking, or a claim that awkwardness can be measured objectively.
Hosted by Kevin Hart at Los Angeles’s Kia Forum as part of Netflix Is a Joke Fest, the special brought together comedians, football figures and surprise guests. Netflix billed it as its first roast telecast live and unedited. The live event and the later streaming version did not contain exactly the same moments, however, which matters most for the first scene below.

1. Kim Kardashian’s entrance met loud boos
TVLine reported that the live crowd booed Kardashian as she took the stage. She paused during her opening joke and glared at the audience while other roasters came to her defense. That was a sharp break from the roast’s expected rhythm: the audience’s reaction interrupted the performance before her set had properly begun.
There is an important version difference. TVLine reported that Netflix’s subsequent streaming edit omitted the boos and displayed an “edited from a previous livestream” label. Netflix vice president of stand-up and comedy formats Robbie Praw said post-edits are standard for comedy specials and live broadcasts, and said talent were not consulted. TVLine also reported that Kardashian had not asked for the boos to be removed. This describes the version TVLine reported on in May 2024; availability and edits can change.

2. Brady stepped in after Jeff Ross’s Kraft joke
Comedian Jeff Ross joked about Patriots owner Robert Kraft and massages. According to the Associated Press, Brady walked over and quietly told Ross, “don’t say that (stuff) again”. The microphone picked up the remark for viewers at home, while AP reported that people in the venue did not hear it. A roast usually invites the target to absorb a joke or answer with one of his own; Brady’s direct, off-mic-sounding intervention made the exchange feel less like routine banter.
The joke referred to a 2019 misdemeanor charge against Kraft connected to a Florida massage parlor. AP reported that prosecutors later dropped the charge after courts blocked the use of police-installed camera video. The charge was not a conviction.

3. Hart’s joke about Gisele turned family life into roast material
Hart aimed one of the evening’s most personal jokes at Brady’s marriage and family. He said, “Gisele gave you an ultimatum. She said you retire or we’re done,” then tied the punchline to Brady’s return to football for the 2022 season after a brief retirement.
The awkwardness came from the subject as much as the joke: Hart framed a high-profile couple’s private decisions as material for a live crowd. His line is evidence of what Hart joked about, not independent confirmation that Bündchen gave Brady an ultimatum.

4. Ben Affleck brought earnest intensity to the roast podium
Affleck was a surprise guest. Netflix Tudum described him as bringing Boston pride and earnest notes for the team; The Ringer’s critic found his segment strange, writing that he spent much of it yelling about internet commenters rather than telling jokes. The contrast was the memorable part: a podium built for punchlines became a platform for an unexpectedly intense, earnest address.
“Strange” is the critic’s judgment, not an objective description of Affleck’s state of mind. The moment stands out because it departed from the roast format, not because the available reporting establishes what Affleck privately felt.

5. Hart coaxed Kraft and Belichick into a reunion toast
Hart got Kraft and former Patriots coach Bill Belichick to take a shot together after jokes about their reunion. Kraft praised Belichick’s historic accomplishments, giving the exchange a gracious note amid an evening built around insults. The Ringer characterized Belichick as “icy” during the event; that is a critic’s impression, not proof of private animosity between the two.
The toast was awkward in a quieter way than the boos or Brady’s interruption. The room was watching two central figures from the Patriots era acknowledge one another onstage, with Hart pushing the moment along.
Why these five moments stand out
The selection weighs visible or audible reactions, how sharply a scene broke with the roast’s playful performance frame, and how much context it takes to understand the tension. Those are editorial criteria, not a published Netflix ranking. The special’s scale helps explain why familiar football figures and celebrity guests shared the stage: Brady’s career included seven Super Bowl wins over 23 seasons, according to Netflix Tudum.
