The Netflix crime drama The Gringo Hunters follows Mexican officers pursuing American fugitives in Mexico. The series is fictional, but Netflix says it was inspired by the real International Liaison Unit. Calling that unit a “Mexican version of ICE” is only a limited analogy: the real-world connection is fugitive apprehension, not a shared immigration-enforcement mission.
What is The Gringo Hunters about?
The Gringo Hunters, titled Los Gringo Hunters on Netflix’s Spanish-language listing, is a 2025 Mexican drama series. Netflix describes its story as following a Mexican police unit that tracks U.S. fugitives who have fled to Mexico. The fictional plot also involves the murder of a team member and corruption within the force. The series stars Harold Torres, Mayra Hermosillo, and Manuel Masalva, among others. Netflix Tudum’s series explainer was published July 10, 2025; the Netflix title listing identifies it as a 2025 Mexican series.
Netflix says the drama is inspired by real events, but it is not a documentary or a literal account of police operations. Netflix Tudum says the series drew inspiration from a 2022 Washington Post report by Kevin Sieff; that connection is Netflix’s account of the inspiration.
Who are the real “Gringo Hunters”?
Netflix identifies the real-world inspiration as Mexico’s International Liaison Unit, describing it as an elite police unit that catches American fugitives on the run to Mexico. The Netflix Media Center description says the series explores the unit’s reality, while the show’s characters and story are fictionalized. The official descriptions do not provide a unit arrest total, success rate, or detailed account of its operating procedures, so those figures should not be inferred from the series.

Is the Mexican unit really Mexico’s version of ICE?
Not in the sense of having the same mission or authority. Netflix’s premise concerns Mexican officers locating U.S. fugitives in Mexico. ICE is a U.S. federal agency whose stated mission is to protect the country through criminal investigations and enforcement of immigration laws. Its Enforcement and Removal Operations branch handles immigration enforcement, including identifying, arresting, detaining, and removing people subject to that process.
There is a narrower point of comparison: ICE says ERO works with foreign law-enforcement partners to locate and arrest foreign nationals wanted for crimes committed abroad who are in the United States. That resembles cross-border fugitive cooperation at a high level, but it does not make the Mexican unit an ICE counterpart. The two operate under different national jurisdictions, and Netflix describes the Mexican unit’s role as pursuing fugitives—not enforcing U.S. immigration law. ICE’s own mission statement and its overview of immigration detention and enforcement set out that broader U.S. remit.
