Netflix’s The Electric State trailer introduces a retro-futuristic alternate 1990s populated by cartoon- and mascot-like robots, while oversized VR headsets stand out as striking visual details. The official synopsis confirms the film’s central journey: orphaned teenager Michelle sets out to find her younger brother with Cosmo, a mysterious robot, and crosses paths with a smuggler and his robot sidekick. Netflix has not identified the headsets’ make or explained their in-story function.

What the trailer shows

Netflix’s official trailer, posted December 18, 2024, presents an alternate, retro-futuristic version of the 1990s. In its description, Netflix says sentient robots resembling cartoons and mascots once lived peacefully alongside people, before a failed uprising sent them into exile. The trailer’s robot designs and the conspicuously oversized headsets give the film much of its distinctive visual identity.

The headset description is an observation about what appears on screen, not a confirmed product or technical explanation. Netflix’s official text does not name a headset model, specify how it works, or establish what role it plays in the story. It is best understood as part of the film’s retro-futuristic imagery rather than identified with a real-world VR device.

What the story is about

Netflix’s Media Center synopsis says Michelle is an orphaned teenager who believes her younger brother Christopher is dead. When a mysterious robot named Cosmo appears and seems to be controlled by Christopher, Michelle travels across the American Southwest to find him.

Along the way, she reluctantly joins Keats, a smuggler, and Herman, his wisecracking robot sidekick. Their journey takes them into an Exclusion Zone where robots live on their own. The premise unfolds in the aftermath of a robot war, with the failed uprising shaping the relationship between people and machines.

Film and production details

Anthony and Joe Russo directed the film. Millie Bobby Brown plays Michelle, Chris Pratt plays Keats, Anthony Mackie voices Herman, and Alan Tudyk voices Cosmo. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay.

Netflix says the production used motion-capture performers and visual effects for the robot characters. Joe Russo described the goal as pushing “the boundaries of what’s possible with robotic characters.” That provides context for the film’s mix of human performers and animated machines, but it does not identify the specific techniques used in individual trailer shots.

Director Anthony Russo connected the story’s period setting to its broader theme in an interview with Netflix Tudum: “We love epic storytelling,” Anthony Russo tells Tudum, “and The Electric State felt like it encapsulated the zeitgeist in terms of what’s happening in this moment between humans and our connection to technology. Even though it’s set in the 1990s, it speaks very powerfully to what we’re all going through today.” That is Russo’s interpretation of the film’s themes, rather than a claim about how viewers respond to technology.

The graphic novel behind the film

The Electric State is based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel of the same name. The book is the clearest way to explore the source material behind the film. Netflix’s credit establishes the adaptation’s origin, but by itself does not show how closely the movie follows the book; a detailed comparison requires looking at both works.
