Splinter Cell: Deathwatch is most appealing as a brisk animated spy thriller, not as a television version of the games’ slow, methodical stealth. One PC Gamer review praised its tense, grounded action and short episodes, while noting that stealth gives way fairly quickly to gunfights, knife fights, and car chases. Whether that trade-off works depends on what you want from a Splinter Cell adaptation.
What is Splinter Cell: Deathwatch about?
Netflix describes Sam Fisher as a legendary figure drawn back into action to help a new recruit unravel a global conspiracy. Its Media Center gives a more specific premise: a wounded young operative seeks out Fisher. Netflix lists Liev Schreiber, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Janet Varney among the stars, with Derek Kolstad as creator. Netflix’s series listing
Deathwatch is the first adaptation of the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell stealth video game, according to Netflix Media Center. Ubisoft produced it in partnership with Derek Kolstad, Sun Creature, and Fost. Guillaume Dousse and Félicien Colmet-Daage directed; Kolstad served as head writer. The series is now playing on Netflix worldwide, though catalog availability can vary by region and date. Netflix Media Center · Netflix Tudum’s first look · Ubisoft’s franchise page
Does the show preserve the games’ stealth identity?
Only to a degree, based on PC Gamer’s October 14, 2025 review. The show includes stealth sequences, but they are relatively brief before the story turns toward open combat and pursuit. That shift is the central adaptation question: the games are associated with patience, concealment, and careful observation, while this series puts more weight on direct action.

That does not make the adaptation automatically unsuccessful. The review argues that action can work for television, even if the overall approach is not entirely in the spirit of the games’ measured stealth play. Viewers seeking extended sneaking and tactical problem-solving may find that balance disappointing; viewers open to Fisher in a more conventional animated action thriller may be more at home with it. How well does the action work?
PC Gamer’s reviewer describes the action as tense, grounded, and well choreographed. Gunplay, knife fights, and car chases take over where the stealth stretches recede, giving the series a more immediate rhythm than a patient infiltration story. This is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus or an aggregate score.

The same review says the series made the reviewer want to play a Splinter Cell game. That is a useful sign of how the adaptation can point back toward the franchise’s source material, but it does not establish that the series reproduces the gameplay experience.
Is the pacing a strength or a limitation?
The episodes are short and the plotting is streamlined, which PC Gamer found easy to watch. The trade-off is that a brisk format can leave less room for character development and plot complexity than a slower spy story might allow. The review supports the description of a compact, streamlined approach; it does not establish a broader audience response.

- EXPANSIVE CAMPAIGN: Many real-world locations have been captured using photogrammetry to recreate a living, immersive environment, and multiple infiltration and extraction points and kill list targets provide a whole new perspective on each mission. Take on the Nazi plot solo or work with a partner, with improved co-op mechanics allowing you to share ammo and items, give orders and heal each other.
- ADVANCED GUNPLAY PHYSICS AND TRAVERSAL: Use ziplines, slide down slopes and shimmy along ledges to reach the perfect vantage point, or to sneak past a sharp-eyed lookout. Factor in rifle stock and barrel options along with gravity, wind and heart rate while you line up your sights on the target.
- HIGH CALIBRE CUSTOMISATION: Use workbenches to customise and upgrade virtually every aspect of your weapon – change scopes, stocks, barrels, magazines and more. Rifles, secondaries and pistols all have a huge variety of options. On top of that you can select the ammo to suit your target, from armour-piercing right down to non-lethal.
- INVASION MODE – CAMPAIGN DROP IN PvP AND CO-OP: Invade another player’s Campaign as an Axis sniper and engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse, providing a new dimension to the challenge as you stalk your prey. Alternatively, as Karl you can call for assistance and have a second sniper drop in to help you out of a tricky situation.
- TENSE ADVERSIAL MULTIPLAYER: Customise your character and loadout and earn XP, medals and ribbons as you take on intensely competitive 16 player battles that will really test your sharpshooting skills. If co-op’s more your style, you can team up with up to 3 other players against waves of enemies in Survival mode.
Will it work for viewers who have not played the games?
Netflix’s premise gives newcomers a clear entry point: Sam Fisher is pulled back into action alongside a new operative investigating a conspiracy. The series can be approached as an animated spy thriller without prior knowledge of the games, though its connection to the franchise’s stealth identity is part of what gives the action its tension.
For context, Netflix Tudum dates the first Splinter Cell game to 2002. The franchise also expanded into tie-in novels in the mid-2000s, but those are background rather than prerequisites for watching Deathwatch. Netflix Tudum

How faithful is the adaptation’s creative approach?
Creator Derek Kolstad told GamesRadar+ that the creative guardrails were to “love the character, respect the IP,” adding that he was allowed to run with the project. That is Kolstad’s account of the working relationship, not an independent guarantee that every element will feel faithful to fans. GamesRadar+ interview with Derek Kolstad
