Netflix’s mobile-only plan launched in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and other reported sub-Saharan markets in June 2021. In Nigeria it cost ₦1,200 per month at launch, but it was a paid, standard-definition subscription for watching on a smartphone or tablet—not a plan for TVs or laptops. Those prices and restrictions describe the 2021 rollout, not Netflix’s verified offer in 2026.
What Netflix launched
On June 29, 2021, Netflix added a lower-priced mobile-only tier in several sub-Saharan African markets, including Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. Nigerian coverage of the rollout followed on July 3. Reports described it as a fourth paid tier alongside Basic, Standard and Premium—not a free plan or trial. TV with Thinus reported the regional rollout; Gizmochina covered the Nigerian launch.

The plan was designed for one concurrent stream on a smartphone or tablet. It was not intended for television, laptop or desktop viewing, or casting to a TV. That made it a narrower option than a conventional household subscription, even for viewers who liked its lower fee.
What the plan included—and what it ruled out
Standard-definition video
Netflix described the picture quality as standard definition. Contemporary accounts did not agree on a precise resolution: reports variously listed 480p and 520p. The safe takeaway is that the tier was below HD, with no single exact figure established across the launch coverage.

Downloads for offline viewing
Launch coverage said subscribers could download films and episodes to watch later, and noted Netflix’s Play Partial Download feature, which let viewers start watching before a download had finished. Downloads could help when connectivity was intermittent or data was costly, but the content first had to be downloaded while online, the device needed enough storage, and not every title is necessarily downloadable in every market. Gizmochina’s launch report describes the download feature.
Market-specific catalogue
Contemporary launch reporting said the mobile tier provided the Netflix catalogue available in the subscriber’s market, rather than a separate mobile-only selection. That meant Nigeria’s available titles could differ from Kenya’s or South Africa’s because catalogues vary by territory. The claim describes the 2021 launch, not a permanent guarantee about later plan terms.

Launch prices across the reported markets
The following are monthly launch-era prices reported in 2021. The regional coverage identified these markets and a dollar-priced category of other sub-Saharan markets; it did not establish a definitive country-by-country list for that category.
| Market | Mobile-only price at launch |
|---|---|
| Nigeria | ₦1,200 per month |
| Kenya | KES300 per month |
| South Africa | R49 per month |
| Other reported sub-Saharan markets | US$3.99 per month |
The Nigerian report also listed the existing launch-era Netflix tiers as Basic at ₦2,900 per month, Standard at ₦3,600 and Premium at ₦4,400. These historical figures show how the mobile tier was positioned then; they are not current prices. The subscription fee was also only one part of the cost of watching: viewers needed Wi-Fi or mobile data as well.

Who the mobile plan suited
It was most useful for someone who watched alone on a phone or tablet, accepted standard definition and could manage the cost of connectivity. Offline downloads could make the plan more practical for commutes or unreliable connections, provided the viewer had storage and downloaded titles in advance.
- Better fit: a mobile-first viewer seeking a lower Netflix subscription fee and willing to watch on a small screen.
- Poor fit: a household that wanted TV or laptop viewing, simultaneous viewers, or sharper HD/4K playback.
- Check the total: add the subscription to the cost and availability of a suitable data or Wi-Fi connection; the launch price alone did not determine the cost of watching.
Why Netflix made a mobile tier
The likely commercial logic was to lower the price barrier for viewers whose primary screen was a smartphone, particularly where fixed broadband was limited or costly. A 2020 report on African streaming markets described broadband access and subscription affordability as obstacles to Netflix’s expansion and noted Nigeria’s importance because of its large economy and film industry. This is an interpretation of the market context, not a confirmed statement of Netflix’s official motive. Techzim’s report provides that historical context.

The African rollout also extended a strategy Netflix had already used elsewhere: the company introduced a mobile-only plan in India in 2019. That earlier offer was reported at ₹199 per month, limited to one smartphone or tablet at a time, and streamed in standard definition. Business Standard covered the India plan.

Showmax and local programming
In South Africa, launch-era reporting compared Netflix Mobile at R49 per month with Showmax Mobile at R39. A 2020 Nigerian report put Showmax’s mobile package at about ₦1,450, a historical comparison rather than a current benchmark. Prices, plans and catalogues vary by country and date. TV with Thinus reported the South African comparison; Techzim cited the earlier Nigerian figure.

Price alone did not settle which service was a better fit. Viewers choosing among services could compare the local programmes they wanted, supported screens, download rules, sports or pay-TV integration, and any data offers available in their country. DStv and other pay-TV packages are also different from a mobile streaming subscription: they may combine channels or services rather than simply provide an app-based catalogue.
IrokoTV and pay-TV competition
Techzim cited IrokoTV at about ₦250 per month in 2020, while also reporting that the service had scaled back parts of its African operations and was targeting wealthier diaspora users. That figure is a dated example, not a dependable present-day price or like-for-like comparison. More broadly, Netflix competed not only with international streamers but with regional services and established pay-TV options.
Do not confuse it with Kenya’s free mobile offer
Netflix’s paid mobile-only tier was separate from a free mobile experience later reported in Kenya in 2021. The free offer had a limited catalogue and Android-only restrictions; it was not the same subscription or a reason to describe the paid plan as free. StreamTV Insider covered the separate Kenya offer.
Is the plan available now?
The launch reporting establishes what Netflix offered in 2021, but does not verify whether the same tier, restrictions or prices remain available in Nigeria or other sub-Saharan markets in 2026. Check Netflix’s local signup flow for current plans and eligibility before subscribing: Netflix signup. Do not use the historical ₦1,200, KES300, R49 or US$3.99 figures as present-day prices.
