The search for a young actor to play Laura Ingalls in Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie adaptation began in March 2025 and had closed by March 20, when the production announced Alice Halsey for the role. The series has since debuted, so the casting call is no longer open.
Who plays Laura Ingalls in the Netflix series?
Alice Halsey plays Laura Ingalls. The official Little House archive announced her selection on March 20, 2025, and said the worldwide search had closed. The production described its Laura as curious, optimistic, fearless, strong-willed, and devoted to her dog, Jack; those are the character traits in the casting announcement, not a claim that the adaptation reproduces every detail of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s life.
The search began in March 2025. The casting announcement thanked people who submitted auditions and confirmed that submissions were no longer being accepted.
What is the Netflix reboot?
Netflix’s adaptation is based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical Little House books. Netflix describes the series as a family drama, survival tale, and origin story of the American West. Rebecca Sonnenshine is its creator, showrunner, and an executive producer. Joy Gorman Wettels, Trip Friendly, Dana Fox, and Susanna Fogel are also executive producers; CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios produce the series for Netflix. The January 2025 announcement is at Netflix’s adaptation announcement.

Netflix’s current series listing describes the close-knit Ingalls family building a new life on the Western frontier. It lists eight episodes, a TV-PG rating, and a 2026 release year.
Has the series been released, and will there be a second season?
The first season debuted on Netflix on July 9, 2026. Netflix confirmed a second-season renewal before that debut. The cited announcement confirms the renewal but does not establish a release date for season two; no date should be inferred from the renewal. Netflix’s announcement is available on Tudum.

How does this adaptation relate to the books and earlier TV series?
The Netflix series returns to Wilder’s books, which the official January 2025 announcement says have sold more than 73 million copies in over 100 countries and been translated into at least 27 languages. Those are figures for the book series reported by the announcement.
The same announcement says NBC’s original television series ran for nine seasons and more than 200 episodes between 1974 and 1983. It also reports that Little House drew 13.25 billion minutes of viewing on Peacock in 2024, citing Nielsen. That viewing figure concerns Peacock in 2024, not Netflix’s adaptation.

Whether the new series suits a viewer better than the books or the older show depends on what they want from an adaptation: a new interpretation of Wilder’s family story, the earlier television version, or the books themselves. The figures above establish the works’ reach, not an objective ranking of their quality.

Netflix says the adaptation explores Osage families living on the same land as the Ingalls family, and that the production worked with Osage and Indigenous experts, artisans, linguists, and other community members. In a July 2026 newsroom account, Netflix described an Osage community screening of an episode about the 1868 Drum Creek Treaty.
