Netflix has discontinued its Basic plan in some markets, but that does not establish that it automatically canceled every affected member’s entire account. The change is to a subscription tier; what happens to an individual membership depends on Netflix’s notice and the account’s status in that country. Check your Netflix account and any message Netflix sent before deciding whether to switch plans or cancel.
Did Netflix cancel Basic plans or entire accounts?
Netflix’s Help Center says, “The Basic plan has been discontinued.” That confirms the plan tier is no longer offered in the market covered by that page; it does not mean every member’s Netflix account was automatically closed. Netflix’s public statements establish a phase-out, not the account-by-account outcome, notice deadline, or replacement plan for every subscriber. Netflix’s Plans and Pricing page requires a country selection, so availability and the meaning of a notice should be checked for your location.
Netflix reported on July 18, 2024, that the Basic phase-out had taken place in the UK and Canada and would start in the US and France. That is a dated status update, not a current rollout schedule or confirmation of what happened to every member in those countries. Netflix also said its ads member base grew 34% sequentially in Q2 2024; that company-wide figure is not the percentage of Basic members who switched plans.
What happened to the Basic plan in your country?
The most useful public timeline is limited to the announcements Netflix made. It should not be read as a complete list of all markets or as a guarantee of an individual account’s status.

What should you do if you received a Basic-plan notice?
- Read the notice for its exact action and date. Look for whether Netflix says your plan is changing, you need to select another plan, or your membership is ending. Public announcements do not establish the deadline for your individual account.
- Check the plan shown in your account. Sign in to Netflix and review membership or plan details. Use the options actually presented for your country and account rather than assuming a plan named on a US page is available to you.
- Review how you pay. If Netflix does not show a cancellation option, the membership may be managed through a payment partner or bundle. Netflix says some members must cancel through that provider.
- Choose whether to keep or end the membership. If you want another plan, select an available option in your account. If you want to stop Netflix, use the cancellation process below; signing out or deleting the app is not cancellation.
How to cancel Netflix yourself
Netflix’s instructions are to cancel through the account’s membership controls. The company says account holders can cancel at any time and receive a confirmation email. Netflix’s cancellation instructions
- Sign in to Netflix and open Manage your membership.
- Select Cancel, then choose Finish Cancellation.
- Look for the confirmation email. If there is no cancellation option, check whether your payment partner handles cancellation.
If you cancel with time remaining in the billing period, Netflix says you can continue watching until that period ends. If the account is on hold, cancellation closes it immediately. Deleting the Netflix app or signing out does not end a membership.

How to check a Netflix charge or billing date
Netflix says memberships are billed monthly on the signup date. A charge may appear in your payment account several days later, and a time-zone difference can shift the billing date by one day. To review past charges and applicable taxes, open Payment History in your account. Netflix’s Billing and Payments guidance
Those general billing rules do not determine a specific member’s last viewing date, refund, proration, or replacement-plan charge. Check your own payment history and account notice for those details.
