Netflix’s current iPhone and iPad app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. Devices that cannot install version 18 will not receive the latest Netflix app updates, but that does not mean Netflix has announced an immediate shutdown of streaming on every older device. An existing app may keep working for now; Netflix does not promise how long. Compatibility information checked August 18, 2026.
What Netflix’s update cutoff means
Netflix’s current device requirements set iOS/iPadOS 18 as the minimum for the latest app. That creates three different situations:

- Current app: You need iOS or iPadOS 18 or later to get the most up-to-date Netflix app, including its current fixes and features.
- Older app: An already-installed earlier version may still play Netflix, but it will not receive the current updates.
- Eventual loss of access: Netflix may eventually require a newer version or stop supporting an old one. Its current support information does not give a universal date when playback will end.
Netflix says people using iOS/iPadOS 12 through 17 may be able to download a compatible older version if they previously obtained Netflix. That is not the same as getting the latest app, and availability is not guaranteed on every device or account. Netflix’s older-version guidance describes the limitation.

A September 2024 report about Netflix moving its minimum to iOS/iPadOS 17 is now historical: Netflix’s current stated requirement is version 18, not 17. MacRumors reported the earlier change.

Which iPhones cannot run the current app?
Apple’s iOS 18 compatibility list starts with iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, as well as the second-generation iPhone SE. It also includes iPhone 11 and newer models. So iPhones that cannot run iOS 18—including iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, first-generation iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 6s and earlier—cannot install the current Netflix app. See Apple’s iOS 18 model list.
Eligibility is not the same as having updated. An iPhone XR or XS can run iOS 18 but may still have an older version installed. Check for an available update before concluding that the hardware is excluded.
Which iPads are affected?
For iPads, the generation matters more than the family name. Apple lists iPad Pro 11-inch (first generation and later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (third generation and later), iPad Air (third generation and later), iPad (seventh generation and later), and iPad mini (fifth generation and later) as compatible with iPadOS 18. Common exclusions include iPad 6th generation and older, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (first and second generations), iPad Air 2 and older, and iPad mini 4 and older. In particular, “iPad Pro” alone is not enough to establish compatibility: some Pro models cannot install iPadOS 18.
Check your model and software version
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings → General → About.
- Read the iOS Version or Software Version entry. To identify the hardware precisely, check the model information on the same screen; do not rely only on its appearance or screen size.
- Open Settings → General → Software Update to see whether the newest version available for that device can be installed.
If the device cannot install iOS/iPadOS 18, a setting change will not make it eligible for the current Netflix app. Apple may still issue security updates for older software branches, but that does not add compatibility with version 18 or the latest Netflix app. Apple’s security-release list tracks those separate updates.
Will Netflix stop working right away?
There is no documented universal date when Netflix will deactivate every older iPhone or iPad. An installed older app may continue to work, but that is not guaranteed. It could stop working if Netflix changes its service requirements, or if an old app runs into problems with sign-in, playback, security or other service changes. It also will not gain new features or bug fixes.

That uncertainty matters before you delete the app, sign out or erase the device. If you remove Netflix, recovery may depend on whether the app was previously associated with the same Apple Account and whether the App Store still offers a compatible version. If reliable access matters—especially on a child’s device or for travel—do not assume an installed old app will keep working indefinitely.

Try the options in this order
1. Update a compatible device
If the model supports iOS/iPadOS 18, install the newest software offered through Settings → General → Software Update, then update Netflix through the App Store. Back up the device first and allow time and storage for the operating-system update.
2. Keep an older installed app if it still works
This costs nothing and may be enough for occasional viewing. The trade-off is that there is no guarantee of continued playback, and you will not receive current Netflix app updates. Avoid deleting the app casually if you are relying on that older installation.

3. Try the last compatible version
If you previously downloaded Netflix with the Apple Account used on the affected device, open the App Store, tap the account/profile icon, open Apps or Purchased, find Netflix and try downloading it. If Apple offers a last compatible version, you can accept the prompt. This may not work for every device or account, and the old release may lack newer features.
If Netflix has never been associated with that Apple Account, the App Store may not offer an older build on the old device. Some users may be able to associate the app by downloading it on a newer compatible Apple device signed in to the same account, then checking purchase history on the older device. This is not a guaranteed Netflix-supported fix; App Store availability can vary.
4. Use Safari on a qualifying iPad
Netflix says iPads running iPadOS 14 or later can watch in HD through Safari. Open Safari, visit Netflix, sign in and play a title. This is an official option for some iPads that cannot run the current app, but it is not an equivalent replacement for every app feature. In particular, do not count on Safari for offline downloads. Netflix’s browser guidance is specifically for iPads; it does not establish the same workaround for every old iPhone.

5. Use another screen before buying hardware
If the device is used mainly for streaming, try a television’s Netflix app, a streaming box or stick, a game console, or a computer browser you already own. Netflix lists supported device categories in its supported devices guide. Confirm support for the specific device before relying on it.
6. Replace the device only if you need to
If you need dependable mobile viewing, app features or downloads and none of the other routes works, choose a phone or tablet that supports iOS/iPadOS 18 and has adequate storage and battery life. For used devices, verify the exact model, remaining software support, battery condition, and that Activation Lock is off. Buying the oldest model that meets today’s Netflix threshold may leave less time before another app-support change.

Streaming eligibility and download eligibility are not identical. Netflix says downloads with its ad-supported experience require iOS/iPadOS 16 or later. That is a separate threshold from the iOS/iPadOS 18 requirement for the latest app. Whether downloads work can also depend on the plan, title, app version, available storage and device. Do not assume that browser playback or an older app will provide downloads.

Netflix has not provided a detailed public explanation for this specific iOS/iPadOS 18 cutoff in the cited support material. In general, app developers have to maintain and test their software against operating systems and devices; newer features may rely on newer system frameworks. Those are industry-level considerations, not a stated reason from Netflix, and they do not change which devices can install the current app.
