It introduced animated artwork, smoother transitions, profile animations, haptic feedback and easier discovery. The current iOS app has since evolved further, adding bottom navigation shortcuts, My Netflix, an upcoming clips feed, games, podcasts and live events.
That distinction matters if you have seen an old headline saying Netflix is “now rolling out” a redesigned iPhone app. The original report was published on January 18, 2023. The app is still being updated, but the 2023 redesign should be understood as the foundation of today’s Netflix iPhone experience.

The 2023 report was about an iPhone refresh, not a new 2026 announcement
The original coverage described a global iOS update that Netflix was rolling out in January 2023. Its focus was the presentation and navigation of the iPhone app—not a new subscription tier, catalog overhaul or redesign of every Netflix platform.
Netflix’s current app is the result of later development as well. The U.S. App Store listing checked on August 18, 2026, describes a broader product with bottom navigation, personalized recommendations, an upcoming clips feed, My Netflix, games, podcasts and live events. Those features should not be presented as though they all launched with the 2023 refresh.

What changed in the 2023 Netflix iPhone refresh?
The redesign made Netflix feel more visual and motion-driven. The principal changes included:
A larger featured “billboard”
The top of the home screen gave more prominence to a featured film or series. Its artwork could respond to the way the user moved the iPhone, creating a parallax effect rather than leaving the image completely static.
Netflix also added subtle lighting effects and generated background gradients from the featured artwork. The result was a more immersive presentation, although it also meant that the home screen devoted more space to promotion and less to immediately visible catalog rows.

Smoother, interruptible card transitions
Film and series cards used more fluid transitions when selected, expanded or dismissed. Netflix described the interactions as more responsive, with motion that could be interrupted rather than forcing the user to wait through a long animation.

Animated launch and profile screens
The refresh added new animation to the app’s launch experience and profile-selection screen. Haptic feedback and additional motion design made profile switching and other interactions feel more tactile on compatible iPhones.
Easier access to search, categories and profiles
The update made common discovery actions easier to reach, including search, category filtering and profile switching. Tapping a film or show could expand its artwork and provide a more prominent way to inspect the title.
“Coming Soon” became “What’s New”
Netflix renamed the Coming Soon area What’s New. The section was intended to surface upcoming releases as well as recommendations, making it more than a simple list of future arrivals.

These changes were primarily visual, navigational and interactive. Netflix did not claim that the refresh would improve measurable playback speed, battery life or streaming performance.
What the Netflix iPhone app offers now
The current U.S. App Store description presents an app that has expanded beyond the 2023 design refresh. Depending on your country, account, device and app version, you may see:

- Access to Netflix series and films alongside live events, games and podcasts.
The App Store listing also describes accessibility support, including VoiceOver, Voice Control, larger text, a dark interface, reduced motion, captions and audio descriptions. Feature availability can vary by market, account and device, so the listing is not proof that every subscriber sees an identical interface.
The listing showed an app size of approximately 210 MB when checked, but App Store size and compatibility details can change.
How to update Netflix on an iPhone
- Open the App Store.
- Tap Search.
- Search for Netflix.
- Select the app published by Netflix, Inc..
- Tap Update, the cloud-download icon or Get, depending on your installation.
- Open Netflix and sign in if prompted.
Netflix’s current help documentation says the latest app requires an iPhone or iPad running iOS 18 or later. That is a requirement for the current version, not necessarily for every older Netflix build.
Someone who previously downloaded Netflix may be able to redownload an older compatible version on a device running iOS 12 or later. That does not mean the newest app, interface or features will work on that device. See Netflix’s official iPhone and iPad support page for the latest compatibility information.
Why you may not see the same interface
The iPhone is running an older version of iOS
If your iPhone cannot update to iOS 18, the current Netflix app may not be available to install. An older compatible build may be offered only if Netflix was previously associated with your Apple account, and it may lack current features.

The app is not actually up to date
If the App Store does not show an update, open Netflix’s listing directly rather than relying only on the updates screen. You can also pull down on the App Store updates page to refresh it, restart the iPhone and check again.
You are using an iPad or Apple TV
The original report concerned Netflix’s iOS app, particularly the iPhone experience. iPhone, iPad and Apple TV versions do not necessarily share the same layout or navigation. Do not assume that an iPhone screenshot represents the Apple TV interface.
Reduced Motion is enabled
Motion-heavy effects may be reduced or absent when accessibility settings limit animation. Netflix supports reduced-motion settings, so missing parallax or transition effects do not automatically indicate a failed installation.
Feature availability differs
Netflix can vary features by market, account, device and app version. The app may also deliver parts of its interface independently of the binary installed from the App Store. Therefore, an updated app does not guarantee that every user will see every visual element at the same time.
The app is unstable or slow
First update iOS and Netflix, close and reopen the app, restart the iPhone and check available storage. Reinstalling Netflix can help with corrupted local app data, but do so only after confirming that you know your Netflix login details. Reinstallation will not bypass an iOS compatibility requirement.

Device and playback requirements are separate from the redesign
The following requirements concern playback or other Netflix capabilities, not necessarily the 2023 visual refresh:
- The current Netflix app requires iOS 18 or later.
- Downloads are supported on iOS 12 or later, subject to plan and title restrictions.
- Downloading on an ad-supported experience requires iOS/iPadOS 16 or later.
- iPhone X and later support Netflix playback in Full HD.
- iPhone 8 and later support HDR playback.
- Spatial Audio with the Premium plan requires a compatible iPhone or iPad, AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, and iOS/iPadOS 14.6 or later.
These specifications should not be interpreted as proof that an older iPhone received—or failed to receive—the 2023 interface refresh.
What the redesign does not change
A new interface changes how you browse and discover content. It does not change:
- Your subscription entitlement or plan benefits.
- Which films and series are licensed in your country.
- Netflix’s household or account rules.
- Download eligibility and title-specific restrictions.
- Video-quality limits or simultaneous-stream limits attached to your plan.
Personalized recommendations may make discovery more convenient, but they do not guarantee that every category or unwanted title can be completely hidden.

The 2023 report mentioned possible Apple TV interface work but did not establish a confirmed tvOS redesign resulting from the iPhone refresh. Netflix lists Apple TV separately from iPhone and iPad, so an iPhone update should not be treated as an Apple TV announcement.
Do you need to buy anything?
No. Existing subscribers do not need to purchase hardware or pay a separate fee to receive ordinary app updates. The Netflix app is free to download, while access to Netflix content requires a membership. The U.S. App Store listing displayed in-app purchase signals of $19.99 and $26.99 when checked on August 18, 2026, but those figures are not a complete or definitive plan table; pricing and plan availability vary by market and can change.
An iOS 18-compatible iPhone is relevant only if your current device cannot run the latest Netflix app. The redesign alone is not a reason to buy a new iPhone.
