Open a title, tap the downward-arrow Download icon, and find the finished download under Downloads. If the icon is missing, the title may not have offline rights; if a download fails, check the exact error code before reinstalling the app.
Check these requirements first
- An active Netflix membership: You must be signed in to an account and using a plan that supports the download features you need. Download-device limits can vary by membership plan and region.
- The Netflix app: Downloads are managed inside the official app from the App Store. They are not available through Netflix in Safari.
- A compatible operating system: Netflix documents downloads on iPhone and iPad devices running iOS or iPadOS 12 or later. However, Netflix’s current app requirement is iOS or iPadOS 18 or later, according to its current iPhone and iPad support page. A device on iOS/iPadOS 12–17 may be able to redownload an older compatible version if Netflix was previously installed with that Apple account, but this is not guaranteed.
- For ad-supported experiences: Netflix says downloads require iOS/iPadOS 16 or later. The separate Downloads for You feature is not available on ad-supported plans.
- Free storage: Downloads are stored locally inside the Netflix app. Leave space not only for the videos but also for iOS, photos, app data, and other applications.
- An internet connection: You need connectivity for the initial download. Wi-Fi is the safest choice for large files, although the app’s current settings determine whether a particular manual download can use cellular data.
- An eligible title: Netflix cannot offer every movie or episode for offline viewing. Licensing, region, season, plan, or content-provider restrictions can remove the download option.
Netflix’s device guidance is the best place to check current operating-system requirements because app compatibility can change.
How to download a Netflix movie on iPhone or iPad
- Open the Netflix app and sign in.
- Find the movie you want to save.
- Open the movie’s title page and look for the downward-arrow Download icon.
- Tap the icon. Netflix will begin downloading the title and show its progress in the Downloads area.
- Wait for the download to finish before leaving a reliable connection.
- Open Downloads and confirm that the movie appears as completed.
Before a flight or journey, start the movie briefly while you still have an internet connection. This confirms that the download is complete and that your account is still signed in.
How to download Netflix episodes on iOS
- Open the show’s title page in Netflix.
- Choose the season if Netflix displays more than one.
- Tap the downward-arrow Download icon beside each episode you want to save.
- Check Downloads to monitor progress and confirm the completed episodes.
Episodes are generally downloaded individually. If one episode has no download icon, that does not necessarily indicate an app problem: download rights can differ by title, season, country, or episode.

Where to find and watch downloaded content
Tap Downloads inside the Netflix app. Do not look in the iPhone or iPad Files or Photos apps. Netflix downloads are protected, app-managed content rather than ordinary MP4 files, so they cannot be copied to another player, exported to iCloud Drive, or transferred as normal videos.
Completed downloads can be watched without an internet connection, but you must remain signed in to Netflix. Account verification, expired-download handling, or a request to refresh access may require you to reconnect.
To remove one download, open Downloads, select the movie or episode, and use the delete or trash control shown for that title. Deleting watched content is preferable to repeatedly retrying downloads when storage is low.
Control download quality and storage
Netflix provides download-quality controls in the app’s settings. The exact labels can change, but the relevant options are generally found under My Netflix, your profile, and App Settings.

- Choose standard quality when storage or download time matters.
- Choose higher quality when the device has ample space and picture quality is more important.
- Check available storage in Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage before downloading a large batch.
- Keep spare capacity for iOS, temporary app data, photos, and other apps. Filling the device completely can cause wider system and app problems.
There is no dependable universal file size for a Netflix movie or episode. Duration, selected quality, and encoding all affect the amount of storage used.

Use or disable Downloads for You
Downloads for You automatically saves recommended titles to your device. It is optional and separate from manually downloading a chosen movie or episode. Netflix says it works over Wi-Fi, uses a storage amount you set for the profile, requires the latest app version, and is unavailable on ad-supported plans.
To manage it:
- Open Netflix.
- Tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap App Settings.
- Under Downloads, tap Smart Downloads.
- Turn Downloads for You on or off, then adjust the storage amount with the plus and minus controls.

Fix “Download Failed” on an iPhone or iPad
Start with the error, not with a reinstall. Netflix’s official workflow is to open Downloads, tap the alert icon beside the failed title, record the displayed error code or message, and search the Netflix Help Center for that exact code.
Then work through these steps in order:
- Try another title. If another movie or episode downloads successfully, the original title may have a licensing or title-specific restriction.
- Check storage. Delete completed downloads or other unwanted content and leave additional free space.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi connection. Pause other large downloads and streaming activity.
- Update Netflix. Open the App Store, search for Netflix, and tap Update if it is available.
- Restart the app. Force-close Netflix, reopen it, and retry.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Delete the partial download. Remove the failed title from Downloads, then start it again.
- Check other devices. An account may have reached its separate download-device limit even when ordinary simultaneous viewing still works.
- Reinstall only as a last resort. Reinstallation removes every Netflix download stored on that device.
Netflix specifically recommends updating the app and checking the alert beside the failed title. Generic connection advice is useful, but the exact code can reveal an account or licensing limit that restarting cannot fix.
What a missing Download icon means
If a title has no downward-arrow download control, check these possibilities:

Netflix explains that some titles can be streamed but not downloaded because the company has streaming rights without the necessary offline rights. This can apply even to Netflix-branded content. Download availability also varies by country and can change after a licensing agreement changes. See Netflix’s download-title guidance.
Do not use a VPN to try to unlock downloads. It will not reliably restore rights and can introduce additional connection, catalog, or playback problems. Third-party downloaders and screen-recording workarounds are also not a supported solution and can create security or account risks.

Error 10021
Netflix says error 10021 generally means that device information needs to be refreshed.
- Open Downloads.
- Tap the download-status icon beside the affected title.
- Tap Delete Download.
- Download the title again.
If it continues, remove downloads from another device or review the account’s download-device limit. Netflix says you can delete downloads directly on another device or use a browser to remove downloads from a device you cannot access. An upgrade is relevant only if the current plan’s download-device limit is genuinely the cause. See Netflix’s 10021 guidance.
Errors 10016-22006 and 10016-22007
These messages indicate that the account has reached a yearly limit for downloading that particular title. Freeing storage, reinstalling Netflix, or changing Wi-Fi will not remove an account-level licensing restriction. Stream the title while connected or choose another one. Netflix documents these limits under 10016-22006 and 10016-22007.

If Netflix says the title can be downloaded only one more time, be cautious: downloading it may prevent another download of that same title for up to a year. See the notice’s specific guidance.
Error 30103
For error 30103, Netflix recommends restarting the iPhone or iPad. If the problem affects downloaded content, delete the affected title and download it again. A download may play on the device but fail when routed to a television because of an unsupported adapter, cable, display input, or HDCP chain. Netflix identifies Lightning adapter model numbers A1438 and A1621 as supported in its cited troubleshooting guidance; USB-C connections may require a cable or adapter supporting HDCP 2.2. Error -103
Netflix associates -103 with a connectivity problem that occurred during downloading. Delete the affected download and download it again over a stable connection. The Netflix error guidance covers this code.
An expired download
Downloads are temporary licenses, not permanent copies. A title can expire after its offline viewing window ends or become unavailable after a rights change. Reconnect to Netflix and look for an option to renew or download the title again. If Netflix no longer offers the download, stream it online or select another title.

To test the device’s internet connection, open fast.com in a browser. If Netflix cannot use cellular data:

- Stereo speakers.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Netflix.
- Turn Cellular Data on.
For a home-network restart, turn off the iPhone or iPad, unplug the modem and router, wait 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait about one minute, and try Netflix again. Netflix provides this sequence in its connection troubleshooting guidance.
Separate the symptoms carefully:
- A failure during the download usually points to the connection, storage, app state, title, or account limit.
- A failure when opening a completed download may indicate stale account verification or corrupted download data.
- A sign-in or authentication problem requires an internet connection even if the video itself was downloaded.
- An expired title needs renewal or a new download, if the title remains eligible; restarting the router will not restore expired rights.
Fix a completed download that will not play
- Reconnect to the internet and open Netflix so the app can refresh account access.
- Confirm that you are still signed in.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Delete only the affected download.
- Download it again over a stable network.
- Test another downloaded title.
If other downloads play, the issue is probably limited to that title or its downloaded data. If none play, investigate sign-in, app, operating-system, or account problems before downloading an entire library again.
Last resort: reset or reinstall Netflix
Warning: resetting or deleting Netflix removes the downloads stored on the device and will sign you out. Use this only after checking the error code, updating the app, restarting the device, and deleting the affected download.

- Open Settings.
- Scroll to Netflix.
- If the option exists on your iOS version, turn on Reset.
- Reopen Netflix, sign in, and download the titles again.
If that option is not present, update Netflix and iOS/iPadOS first. As a final step, delete Netflix and reinstall it from the App Store. Netflix’s iOS troubleshooting instructions confirm that reinstalling deletes local downloads.
When to contact Netflix
Contact Netflix support when:
- Several unrelated eligible titles fail after updating and restarting.
- The exact error code has no matching Help Center article.
- Your account shows an incorrect download-device state.
- A title appears eligible but remains blocked across multiple supported devices and locations.
- Reinstalling Netflix and downloading again does not resolve the problem.
Before contacting support, note the title, country, iPhone or iPad model, iOS/iPadOS version, Netflix app version, and exact error code. That information helps distinguish a device fault from a plan, account, regional, or licensing restriction.
Plan and device limits to keep in mind
Netflix separates simultaneous viewing from downloads. An account may support multiple registered devices, while the plan can still limit how many screens stream at once and how many devices can hold downloads. Netflix does not publish one universal download-device number for every plan and region, so check the limit shown in your account rather than relying on an old number. Its device and screen guidance and download-device guidance explain the distinction.
If you need a membership, use Netflix’s official signup page and verify the current plan details for your country. Pricing, video quality, simultaneous screens, download limits, and ad-supported features can change by region. Do not upgrade simply because one title lacks a download icon; an upgrade cannot create offline rights that Netflix does not hold.

Quick checklist before going offline
- Update Netflix and iOS/iPadOS while connected.
- Confirm that every desired title shows the downward-arrow download icon.
- Download over stable Wi-Fi when possible.
- Check free device storage.
- Wait for each title to finish.
- Open Downloads and test playback.
- Remain signed in to Netflix.
- Reconnect periodically in case a download expires or Netflix needs to verify the account.
