Netflix launched mobile versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas—the three games in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition—on December 14, 2023. The release was for iOS and Android, not a new console or PC launch. At the time, Netflix members could play without paying a separate game fee; the announcement does not establish that the titles remain in Netflix’s catalog today.
What Netflix added
The release brought mobile editions of the 2021 remastered collection to Netflix’s games catalog. It comprised:
- Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, set in Liberty City.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition, set in a fictionalized 1980s Miami.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition, set in a fictionalized early-1990s California.
Rockstar describes the Definitive Edition collection as featuring updated lighting and environmental effects, higher-resolution textures, increased draw distances and controls influenced by Grand Theft Auto V. Those are collection-level enhancements; they do not mean the mobile versions are identical to the console or PC editions. Rockstar’s product page outlines the collection and its separate-platform offering.
When it launched—and what the date means now
Netflix announced the release on November 29, 2023, and the games became available on December 14, 2023. Netflix and Rockstar described distribution through Netflix’s mobile-games service and the iOS and Android app ecosystems. #1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
That is a historical launch date, not confirmation of present-day availability. Catalog membership and regional app-store listings can change, so check Netflix and the relevant store listing before downloading. The announcement’s global-release language describes the original launch; it should not be read as a guarantee that every title is available in every region now.
What “included with Netflix” meant
At launch, an active Netflix membership was required to use the Netflix versions. Netflix said its games carried no separate game fee, advertisements or in-game purchases. In other words, “free” meant included in a paid membership—not available to someone without Netflix. See Netflix’s mobile-games access guidance.

- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
There was also a standalone mobile-purchase route. A contemporary U.S. launch-period report listed each mobile game at $19.99; that is a reported price at the time, not a verified current price. GameSpot’s coverage gives that historical comparison. Whether a subscription or separate purchase makes more sense depends on whether you already subscribe, how long you expect to play and the current price and availability in your region.
How members installed the mobile games
Netflix’s documented installation flow uses its mobile app to send the user to the device’s app store. The exact button wording can vary by platform or app version.

Android
- Open Netflix and find the Mobile Games row or tap the Games shortcut.
- Select the GTA title and tap Get Game. Alternatively, find the title directly in Google Play.
- Complete installation in Google Play, then open the game.
- Sign in with the Netflix account if prompted and choose a Netflix profile.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Netflix and find the Mobile Games row.
- Select the GTA title and tap Get Game or Play Game.
- Tap Get or the App Store download icon to install it.
- Open the game, sign in with Netflix if prompted and choose a profile.
Netflix says game progress is associated with the selected profile. Its support documentation warns that deleting that profile permanently deletes its associated game progress. For the platform-specific flow and account details, consult Netflix’s installation instructions and account and access guidance.
Device, profile and storage considerations
You need an active membership, a compatible iPhone, iPad or Android device, internet access to download the game, enough free storage and access to the relevant app store. Netflix’s general mobile-games guidance recommends Android 9 or later, iOS 17 or later and iPadOS 17 or later for the best experience across its games. These are general recommendations, not a confirmed minimum specification for each GTA title; check the live title listing for device-specific requirements and download size. Netflix’s help page explains that requirements vary by game.

- If the title does not appear, the device may be incompatible, the app may need updating, the game may not be listed in your region, or the selected Netflix profile may have a maturity restriction.
- Mobile games are installed on the device, so check available storage before starting the download.
- Netflix mobile games are distinct from games offered through Netflix on TVs or computers. The GTA announcement concerned mobile distribution, not a Netflix console, TV or PC version.
Netflix’s missing-game troubleshooting page covers compatibility and listing issues. Its separate pages explain mobile games and TV and computer games.

| Route | What it offered | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix mobile version | The three mobile games were included for an active Netflix member at launch, with no separate game fee. | Access depended on membership and catalog availability; check current listings before relying on it. |
| Standalone mobile editions | Separate purchases were reported at $19.99 per game in the United States during the launch period. | That historical price is not a current quote; availability and pricing depend on the storefront and region. |
| Other platform editions | Rockstar sold the Definitive Edition separately for supported console and PC platforms. | These are not the Netflix mobile release; check the platform store for current availability and price. |
The collection’s separate purchase on other platforms is listed by the Rockstar Store. A Netflix subscription did not put those console or PC versions inside the Netflix app.

- Update the Netflix app, then search for the exact title in the App Store or Google Play.
- Check the device’s operating-system compatibility and available storage against the current listing.
- Try an adult profile without restrictive maturity settings; age controls can hide mature games.
- Confirm the Netflix membership is active. If the game opens but does not authenticate, sign out and back in.
- Check the current Netflix catalog and storefront listing for regional restrictions or catalog changes.
