Microsoft’s agreement with Nintendo is a binding 10-year commitment centered on Call of Duty—not a promise that every future Xbox game will launch on Nintendo hardware. Announced on February 21, 2023, the deal was made while Microsoft sought approval to acquire Activision Blizzard. That acquisition closed on October 13, 2023. The clearest current example is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, officially listed for Nintendo Switch 2 with an announced October 23, 2026 release date.
What Microsoft and Nintendo actually signed
Microsoft described the arrangement as a binding, definitive legal agreement lasting 10 years. Its public description required Microsoft to make future Call of Duty releases available to Nintendo players alongside Xbox releases, with same-day availability and comparable features and content as described by Microsoft. The February 21, 2023 announcement followed an earlier December 2022 reference to a Nintendo commitment.

Does it cover every Xbox game?
No, not on the publicly documented terms. The Nintendo commitment was presented as a Call of Duty agreement. It does not establish an automatic Nintendo release for Halo, Forza, Starfield or every other Xbox Game Studios title.
Microsoft has separately released or discussed bringing selected Xbox-owned and Activision Blizzard franchises to Nintendo, PlayStation, PC, mobile and cloud services. That is a broader platform strategy, made through individual publishing decisions, ports or other arrangements—not proof that those games are covered by the Nintendo contract. Microsoft’s post-acquisition overview discusses that wider approach at Xbox’s Activision Blizzard announcement.
- Contractual commitment: future Call of Duty availability on Nintendo platforms.
- Separate releases: other Xbox-owned games may appear on Nintendo only when Microsoft announces them.
- Game Pass: the agreement does not establish a native Game Pass service on Nintendo consoles.
- Other Activision Blizzard franchises: Microsoft ownership does not automatically put every title on Nintendo.
Why Call of Duty mattered to the acquisition
Microsoft announced its planned Activision Blizzard acquisition on January 18, 2022. Regulators recognized Call of Duty as a major cross-platform franchise and worried that Microsoft could make it exclusive to Xbox or disadvantage rival consoles and cloud services. A Nintendo commitment helped Microsoft argue that ownership would expand access rather than restrict it. The background acquisition announcement is documented by Activision Blizzard’s January 2022 release.
The Nintendo deal was one part of Microsoft’s regulatory strategy, not the sole reason the transaction was approved. The United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority continued to examine the merger and ultimately required a restructured transaction involving Ubisoft for certain cloud-streaming rights. Microsoft explained that restructuring at Microsoft and Activision Blizzard restructure proposed acquisition.

How the acquisition changed responsibility for Call of Duty
The Nintendo agreement was negotiated while the acquisition was still under review. Activision Blizzard’s December 8, 2022 update referred to Microsoft’s 10-year Nintendo commitment, while Microsoft’s February 2023 statement called the agreement binding. The public sources do not establish what would have happened to every obligation if the merger had failed, so it is more accurate to describe the deal as negotiated in the acquisition context rather than assume its counterfactual legal outcome.
Microsoft completed the acquisition of Activision Blizzard King on October 13, 2023, making Microsoft Gaming the owner responsible for the franchise’s distribution strategy. The closing was announced in Xbox’s welcome announcement.
What “same-day” and “feature parity” do—and do not—mean
Microsoft’s public description emphasized same-day release and full feature and content parity. In practical terms, that points to comparable commercial access rather than identical hardware performance.
- It does not promise identical resolution or frame rate.
- It does not promise equal loading times, graphics settings or storage requirements.
- It does not guarantee identical control schemes or installation formats.
- It does not by itself prove that every mode, seasonal update, bundle or downloadable item will be available on every Nintendo device.
A Nintendo edition may require compression, visual compromises, platform-specific optimization or a different storage structure while still delivering the game’s principal content. Cross-play and cross-progression are separate features that require title-specific confirmation.

Which Nintendo hardware is relevant?
The original announcement used broad language such as “Nintendo platforms” and referred to Nintendo Switch. That should not be read as a guarantee that every future release must run on the original 2017 Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED. A 10-year term can span multiple Nintendo hardware generations, and technical support must be confirmed for each game.
Nintendo announced that Switch 2 would launch in the United States on June 5, 2025, at a $449.99 launch MSRP: Nintendo’s launch announcement. The relevant current target is Switch 2, not an assumption about the older hardware.
What Nintendo players can expect in 2026
On June 7, 2026, Xbox Wire identified Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and its DMZ extraction-shooter experience for Nintendo Switch 2, alongside Xbox, PlayStation 5, Battle.net and Steam. Xbox’s announcement is available at DMZ—New Intel on Call of Duty’s Extraction Shooter Experience.
Xbox’s product information gives an announced release date of October 23, 2026: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Because that date is future relative to August 18, 2026, it is a scheduled release, not evidence that the game has already launched. The Xbox page lists Xbox Series X|S and PC rather than Xbox One; that limitation should not be generalized to the Nintendo version without a separate Nintendo or Activision specification.

What the agreement does not promise
- Every Xbox first-party game on Nintendo.
- Support for the original Switch or every model in the Switch family.
- Identical graphics, frame rates, loading times or storage needs.
- Native Xbox Game Pass access on a Nintendo console.
- Every Call of Duty mode, update, bundle or service feature forever on every Nintendo device.
- A guaranteed simultaneous launch for a particular title unless that title’s publisher announcement confirms it.
- A physical Nintendo edition or a Nintendo-specific price before those details are announced.
How to evaluate a Nintendo Call of Duty release
- Check the exact hardware: confirm whether the announcement names Switch 2, the original Switch or a cloud version.
- Confirm delivery method: distinguish a native download or cartridge from streaming.
- Read the feature list: verify campaign, multiplayer, free-to-play modes, cross-play, cross-progression and post-launch support separately.
- Check online and account requirements: Nintendo Account, publisher account, internet access and any platform subscription can differ by release. Xbox’s Game Pass requirement for console multiplayer applies to Xbox versions, not automatically to Nintendo.
- Check storage: wait for the Nintendo edition’s stated installation size before buying a microSD Express card.
- Verify launch details: a listed date does not establish Nintendo pre-order availability, physical packaging or regional pricing.
Nintendo’s general digital-purchase guidance says purchases through Nintendo.com require a Nintendo Account that has accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once; that guidance does not prove that a particular Call of Duty edition is currently purchasable. See Nintendo’s digital purchasing FAQ.
What this means for Nintendo owners
For Nintendo players, the deal’s practical value is access to the mainline Call of Duty ecosystem on Nintendo hardware, with Switch 2 making technically demanding releases more plausible in portable form. It also shows that Microsoft treats Nintendo as an important distribution platform in selected cases.
It is not, however, a universal Xbox-to-Nintendo pipeline. Each non-Call of Duty game, hardware target, delivery method and online feature still requires its own announcement. The safest reading is therefore narrow: Microsoft made a long-term Call of Duty commitment, while broader Xbox multiplatform activity remains a separate strategic choice.

Not necessarily. The public commitment refers to Nintendo platforms, while the currently identified Modern Warfare 4 target is Nintendo Switch 2. Compatibility must be confirmed title by title.
Is Call of Duty included with Nintendo Switch Online?
The agreement does not include a Nintendo Switch Online entitlement. Pricing, subscriptions and online requirements for a Nintendo release must be announced for that specific game.
