No—the Creature survives. Victor dies after asking the Creature to say his name once more, and the Creature forgives him. Captain Anderson lets the Creature go and turns his ship’s crew home, while the Creature remains alive beneath the Arctic sun.
What happens to the Creature at the end of Frankenstein?
After hearing the Creature’s account of his life, Victor recognizes the harm he caused. Director Guillermo del Toro describes the moment as a parent hearing a child explain what went wrong and finally having an epiphany.
The Creature chooses forgiveness rather than revenge. Victor asks him to say his name one more time; the Creature does, and Victor dies peacefully. The moment resolves their relationship emotionally, but it cannot undo the Creature’s loneliness or the deaths that came before it.
Captain Anderson allows the Creature to leave. The Creature frees the Horisont from the ice, and Anderson decides to take the crew home instead of pressing on toward the horizon. The last image shows the Creature alive in Arctic light.

Why does the Creature forgive Victor?
The film frames forgiveness as the Creature’s response to understanding Victor’s flaws and history—not as proof that Victor’s actions were harmless. Jacob Elordi, who plays the Creature, says, “In forgiveness is where the Creature learns that he can finally be human.” The choice interrupts a cycle of harm and retaliation without repairing everything that harm has taken from him.
That parent-and-child framing also points to the way pain is passed on. Oscar Isaac describes inherited damage passing from father to son, while del Toro presents Victor’s encounter with the Creature’s story as a chance to recognize his own responsibility. Victor’s recognition comes late: it does not bring back those who died or give the Creature the life he might have had.

Who is the monster in the film?
The film turns the question toward Victor’s conduct, rather than treating the Creature’s appearance as a sufficient answer. Netflix Tudum’s November 7, 2025, ending explainer recounts William’s final accusation that Victor is the monster. Del Toro’s interpretation is that Victor sees himself as a victim even as he destroys other people’s lives. That is the filmmaker’s reading of Victor, not a neutral statement that settles every meaning of the film.
What does the Arctic ending mean?
Anderson and Victor are both driven by ambitions that risk other people’s safety. Anderson’s decision to turn back marks a different choice: he takes responsibility for the crew rather than continue toward the horizon. The Creature’s act of freeing the ship makes their departure possible, but he does not join them.

The final sunlight recalls an earlier moment when Victor taught the Creature to bask in the sun. The visual echo links their relationship as maker and created child to the Creature’s life beyond Victor. It offers survival and agency, not a reunion or a confirmed companion.
