Short answer: Netflix really tested an “add a home” charge in July 2022, but only in five Latin American countries. That experiment was later sunset. In the United States today, Netflix uses a one-household rule: a television or streaming device at another residence may require temporary verification, while someone who permanently lives elsewhere generally needs an eligible Extra Member slot or a separate account.
The claim in one table
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Was an “extra home” fee tested? | Yes. Netflix announced it on July 18, 2022, in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. |
| Is that the current U.S. product? | No. Netflix later said it was sunsetting “add a home” and moving to Extra Members and profile transfers. |
| Can another home trigger a block? | Yes, especially on televisions and TV-connected streaming devices outside the designated Netflix Household. |
| Is travel allowed? | Yes. Netflix supports travel, although a TV may request a temporary access code. |
| What is the paid option for a permanent outside user? | An eligible Extra Member or a separate Netflix account. |
What Netflix announced in 2022
The original “add a home” policy was not a global launch. Netflix included one home with an account and proposed charging for additional physical homes in five named markets. Argentina was listed at 219 Argentine pesos per extra home per month; the Dominican Republic, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala were listed at $2.99 per extra home per month. The limits depended on the subscription tier:
- Basic: one additional home
- Standard: up to two additional homes
- Premium: up to three additional homes
Netflix said people could still travel and watch on tablets, laptops and mobile devices. The company later announced that it would sunset “add a home” in those markets and focus on paid Extra Members and profile transfers. See Netflix’s 2022 paid-sharing update.
How the policy evolved
Early Extra Member testing
In March 2022, Netflix began testing paid Extra Members in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru.

The “add a home” experiment
On July 18, 2022, Netflix announced the five-country extra-home test described above. It explicitly said it was evaluating the approach rather than immediately applying it everywhere.
Household controls expanded
On February 8, 2023, Netflix announced broader household-sharing controls and Extra Members in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. On May 23, 2023, it began sending U.S. notices to people sharing outside their household. Netflix’s explanation is in its sharing update and its U.S. sharing announcement.
What “Netflix Household” means now
Netflix defines a household as the collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where the subscriber watches Netflix. It associates devices using the account’s IP address, device IDs and account activity. Netflix says it does not use GPS to determine a device’s precise physical location. A household therefore means people who live together—not every relative, address or occasional destination linked to the account. Details are in Netflix’s Netflix Household definition.
What happens at another home
Television or TV-connected device
A television outside the household may show “Your TV isn’t part of the Netflix Household for this account” or a similar device message. The account owner may be asked to update the household, verify the device or have the user create an account. Netflix’s household-device support page contains the current prompts and troubleshooting paths.

Phone, tablet or computer
Netflix does not describe its policy as a universal ban on every device outside the home. Travel on mobile devices and computers remains supported, although Netflix can still request verification when activity appears outside the household.
Hotel, friend’s house or short trip
Choose I’m Traveling on a TV, or Watch Temporarily in the mobile app or browser, when that option appears. Netflix sends a temporary code to the account owner by email or text. Enter it on the affected device. The code expires after 15 minutes. Repeated incorrect attempts can cause a 24-hour block on that TV. Netflix recommends opening the app on the household Wi-Fi at least once a month during travel to reduce interruptions.
Vacation home
A vacation home is a separate physical location, so its television may be treated as outside the household. Netflix’s documented remedies are temporary verification or updating the household; there is no current U.S. “extra home” entitlement. Do not update the household merely to bypass checks if the account still primarily belongs to another residence.
A student or worker living elsewhere
Short-term travel is different from maintaining a second household. Someone who permanently lives elsewhere—particularly someone using a TV there—may need an Extra Member or a separate account.

How to restore access when a device is flagged
- Connect the device to the same Wi-Fi network used by the household’s main TV, if possible.
- On the warning screen, choose Update Netflix Household only if the account’s primary residence has genuinely changed.
- If offered, select Troubleshoot This TV and scan the QR code.
- Complete email or text verification using the account owner’s phone or email.
- For travel, select I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily, request the code and enter it within 15 minutes.
- Review recently active devices and sign out unfamiliar devices or all devices.
- Restart the Netflix app or refresh the browser. Contact Netflix if a device in the actual household remains misidentified.
A recent hotel stay or visit to another home can leave a device associated with the wrong location, according to Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance.
Extra Members: the current paid-sharing option
An Extra Member is a separately credentialed sub-account paid for by the main account holder. It has its own login, password and profile; it is not simply a switch that unlocks every television at a second residence.
- In the U.S., Standard can add one Extra Member.
- Premium can add up to two Extra Members.
- The Extra Member must be activated in the same country where the account owner created the account.
- Extra Members are unavailable on ad-supported plans and on some third-party-billed or Netflix-included packages.
- Availability varies by country.
See Netflix’s account-sharing help page for eligibility and restrictions.

Common misconceptions
“Premium means four homes.”
No. Premium’s simultaneous-stream allowance and Extra Member capacity do not override the one-household rule.
“Netflix tracks GPS.”
Netflix says household determination uses IP address, device IDs and account activity, not GPS for precise location.

“Every hotel visit requires payment.”
No. Netflix provides temporary travel verification, although the account owner may need to supply the code.
“Extra home and Extra Member are the same.”
No. “Add a home” referred to the discontinued 2022 physical-location experiment. Extra Member is a separate sub-account arrangement.
“A relative automatically counts as household.”
Only people who live together at the primary residence fit Netflix’s household definition. Family relationship alone does not determine eligibility.
Verdict
The headline was historically grounded but is misleading when presented as current U.S. policy. Netflix did test an extra-home fee in five Latin American countries in 2022, then retired that approach. Today, a second residence may trigger TV verification, but occasional travel remains supported. A person who permanently lives outside the household generally needs an eligible Extra Member slot or an independent Netflix account.
