Bitmoji’s “Mix and Match” lets you build an avatar outfit from separate clothing pieces instead of accepting one fixed look. In Snapchat’s mobile app, you can combine one-piece garments, tops, bottoms, footwear, socks and outerwear, change colors where offered, and save the finished style to your Closet. The exact menu may be labeled Fashion, Change Outfit, Try a New Look or Avatar Designer, depending on the app version, language and account.
Use Snapchat on iPhone or Android for the current full customization workflow. Snapchat says complete Bitmoji editing is not available on its web or desktop versions.
What Bitmoji Mix and Match actually does
Mix and Match is best understood as a modular clothing editor. A preset outfit is a ready-made combination; Mix and Match lets you replace its components individually and create a combination that was not shown as a single preset. Bitmoji’s official instructions describe the clothing editor and its categories in detail: Bitmoji outfit support.

Available categories include one-piece items such as dresses or jumpsuits, tops, bottoms, footwear, socks and outerwear. Other fashion or accessory categories may appear in the current editor. A garment can also have its own control; Bitmoji gives the example of a long shirt with a tuck/untuck option.

How to open Mix and Match in Snapchat
- Open the Snapchat mobile app.
- From the camera screen, tap your profile or Bitmoji icon in the upper-left corner.
- Tap your Bitmoji, or tap the fashion/hanger control if it is shown.
- Choose Change Outfit, Fashion, Try a New Look or the equivalent clothing editor.
- Choose a complete preset, or move into the individual clothing categories.
- Tap a garment to preview it on your avatar.
- When a color palette appears, select a color. Swipe upward on the palette to reveal additional available colors.
- Repeat for the other categories, then tap Save.
Snapchat’s current wording is documented in its outfit-changing instructions. Older Bitmoji documentation uses “Avatar Designer” and a hanger icon for essentially the same editing route, so do not assume that every account displays the phrase “Mix and Match.”
Build a complete outfit piece by piece
1. Start with a one-piece garment or a top
Select one-piece if you want a dress, jumpsuit or similar garment to define the outfit. Otherwise choose a top and preview different shirts, sweaters or jackets. If the item offers a tuck/untuck or another garment-specific toggle, apply it before moving on.
2. Add bottoms when the top allows them
Open bottoms and choose trousers, skirts, shorts or another available item. A one-piece garment may not use a separate bottom slot, and some tops or special outfits can restrict what appears.

3. Choose socks and footwear
Pick socks first when you want them visible, then select footwear. Preview the avatar after each choice; visual pairing is item-specific rather than guaranteed for every combination.
4. Add outerwear and adjust color
Use outerwear for coats, overshirts or similar layers when available. For any garment with a palette, choose from the colors offered for that item. A color option is not a promise that every garment has the same range.
Save a finished look and favorite individual items
Save the completed outfit
Tap the green Save button after assembling the look. This stores the current avatar style so you can switch back to it from the Closet or saved looks area when that option is available.

Save a favorite garment
In Snapchat’s fashion editor, press and hold an individual item to save it to the Closet. Open the Closet tab later to retrieve saved pieces. Press and hold a saved item to delete it. These save controls and the completed-look workflow are described by Bitmoji support.
Saving does not guarantee permanent availability. Bitmoji notes that some customization options are limited-time; a withdrawn item may no longer be selectable when the app next loads.

Some preset outfits cannot be customized. If you select an individual Mix and Match garment while wearing one of those presets, Snapchat may remove or replace the preset rather than edit it. That is an intended limitation, not necessarily a lost account or a broken Closet.

To recover, choose another preset that supports individual editing, or rebuild the look manually from the clothing categories and save it. If a previously used item has vanished entirely, it may have been a limited-time fashion item; there is no supported way to force a withdrawn catalog item back into the editor.

Mix and Match itself is not a paid-only feature. Snapchat also marks some fashion items with a $ symbol. Tap a marked item to see Purchase Item or Checkout; multiple shoppable pieces can be combined in one purchase. Snapchat says a shoppable look cannot be saved until the relevant item has been purchased. Prices and availability are shown in the app and can vary by region, promotion and catalog update.
Branded digital fashion has appeared in the Bitmoji ecosystem, including Snap’s Ralph Lauren announcement from August 6, 2020 (Snap newsroom) and Lacoste’s October 10, 2024 DRESSX collaboration (Lacoste announcement). Those announcements are historical examples, not proof that the same collections remain available in your account today.

Bitmoji’s support documentation states that, beginning in 2024, new fashion items are available only in Snapchat. The standalone Bitmoji app may still show older or alternate controls, but Snapchat is the primary route for the current catalog.
Mix and Match is not Snap the Look
Mix and Match is manual avatar editing: you choose garments and save the resulting Bitmoji outfit. Snap the Look is a separate AI Lens feature for Lens+ subscribers where available. It styles a Bitmoji from a photo inside a Snap and produces an AI-generated image in that Snap; it does not update the outfit saved in your Closet. Troubleshoot missing controls and inconsistent outfits
The Fashion or hanger control is missing
- Confirm you are using Snapchat’s iPhone or Android app, not Snapchat for Web or desktop.
- Open your profile and tap the Bitmoji itself; look for Change Outfit or Fashion rather than one exact label.
- Update Snapchat through your device’s official app store if the interface is substantially older.
- If the control still does not appear, account, language, region and staged rollout differences may affect what you see.

An item is unavailable or the avatar reverted
Check whether the item was limited-time, branded or shoppable. A changed catalog can remove an option, and an unpurchased shoppable item cannot remain in a saved shoppable look. Rebuild the outfit with currently available pieces and save it again.
The outfit looks different in another Snapchat surface
Stickers, Stories, Lenses and the 3D avatar do not necessarily expose identical fashion assets. In particular, the AI result from Snap the Look is separate from the saved Closet outfit, so compare the avatar in the editor when verifying a saved change.
