Yes, Netflix eliminated its Basic ad-free plan in the United States and United Kingdom—but the change is not new. Netflix announced the US and UK phaseout in 2023 and completed key stages during 2024. Its current plan documentation says Basic has been discontinued.
For US customers, the cheapest direct Netflix option currently listed is Standard with ads at $8.99 per month. The cheapest ad-free option is Standard at $19.99 per month. Prices and availability can differ by country, taxes, and third-party billing.

What Netflix actually removed
Netflix retired Basic, its cheapest ad-free tier, in selected markets. That is different from the ad-supported plan originally called Basic with Ads, which launched in 2022 and is now called Standard with ads in the US.

Netflix’s current Help Center plan page explicitly states that “The Basic plan has been discontinued.” The accurate takeaway is therefore not that Netflix has suddenly axed Basic in August 2026, but that an earlier phaseout remains in effect.

When did Netflix remove Basic?
- November 3, 2022: Netflix launched its ad-supported tier in the US at $6.99 per month and in the UK at £4.99 per month. These were launch prices, not current prices. See Netflix’s US announcement and UK announcement.
- July 2023: Netflix announced that it was removing the ad-free Basic tier for new and returning members in the US and UK. Netflix’s shareholder letter described the initial change as applying to new and rejoining customers, rather than immediately removing the plan from every existing account.
- January 2024: Netflix said it would begin retiring Basic in the UK in the second quarter as part of a broader expansion of the policy. Netflix’s Q4 2023 letter provides the company’s timeline.
- October 2024: Netflix reported that it had phased out Basic in the US and France during the preceding quarter. See its Q3 2024 shareholder letter.
- August 2026: Netflix’s current documentation continues to list Basic as discontinued.
There was not necessarily one universal cancellation date for every subscriber. Rollout timing depended on the market, account status, and whether Netflix was billed directly or through a provider.

The following prices and features were listed by Netflix on August 18, 2026. Taxes may apply, and customers using a package or third-party billing arrangement may see different options.

What UK customers can choose
Netflix’s UK plan page confirms that Standard with adverts remains available as the lower-priced plan. It includes 1080p viewing, two simultaneous devices, and downloads, but Netflix says some titles may be unavailable because of licensing restrictions.

Netflix’s official UK page did not provide a reliable current pound price in the available information, so historical prices should not be presented as current 2026 pricing. The £4.99 figure applies to the ad-supported plan’s November 2022 launch; the old ad-free Basic price was historically reported as £7.99 in 2023.
What happened to existing Basic subscribers?
Netflix did not initially remove Basic from every existing account at once. Its first US and UK announcement focused on new and rejoining members, while later disclosures confirmed the broader US phaseout during 2024.

- Cancel: sensible for occasional viewers who do not use Netflix often enough to justify the price.
Customers billed through Verizon, Comcast/Xfinity, or another provider may not see the same plan menu as direct Netflix subscribers. Check the exact plan name and next payment in the Netflix account page, then check the provider’s rules if Netflix appears as part of a package. Is Standard with ads a replacement for Basic?
It is a cheaper alternative, but it is not a like-for-like replacement.
- Ads can appear before and during selected programs and films. Netflix says breaks are generally placed around natural plot breaks, but ads cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded while playing.
- A small number of films and shows may be unavailable because Netflix does not have the necessary advertising-tier rights. A lock icon identifies affected titles; this is a catalog restriction, not an account error. See Netflix’s title-availability guidance.
- Some older TVs and streaming devices cannot run the ad-supported experience because their Netflix app or operating system cannot be updated sufficiently.
- Casting or mirroring Netflix from a mobile device to a TV is not supported on an ad-supported plan.
- Kids profiles do not have ads, although catalog restrictions can still apply.
- Extra members cannot be added to ad-supported plans. Standard and Premium may support extra members, subject to country and package restrictions. See Netflix’s household and extra-member guidance.
Check whether your device supports the ad plan
Before switching, Netflix recommends checking compatibility directly in the app:
- Open Netflix.
- Open the menu.
- Select Get Help.
- Select Plan Compatibility.
Depending on the device, the menu may appear under the profile icon at the top or on the left side. If Plan Compatibility does not appear, Netflix says that device cannot be used with an ad-supported experience. More details are available in Netflix’s device compatibility article.

- Choose Standard with ads if the lowest price matters most, your devices are compatible, and two 1080p streams are enough.
- Choose Standard if interruptions and locked titles are unacceptable but 1080p and two streams meet your needs.
- Choose Premium if you have a compatible 4K/HDR setup, need four simultaneous streams, want more download devices, or require eligible extra-member flexibility.
- Cancel or rotate services if you watch Netflix only for occasional releases or already receive comparable programming through a bundle.
Why did Netflix do it?
Netflix has presented the strategy as a combination of consumer pricing and advertising growth. Its investor communications say advertising allows a lower-priced entry point while creating an additional revenue stream. Netflix also reported that the ad-supported plan was taking a growing share of sign-ups in markets where it was available.

That is Netflix’s stated business rationale—not proof that every Basic subscriber was forcibly moved to ads. The company has retained ad-free plans, but it removed the cheapest ad-free way to subscribe.

“I was automatically moved to the ad plan.”
Do not assume this happened universally. Check your account’s exact plan name, next billing amount, and whether a third party handles billing. If the account is part of a package, the provider may control the available upgrade or downgrade paths.
“The price is different from an older article.”
Older reports may quote the 2022 US launch price of $6.99, the 2022 UK launch price of £4.99, or earlier Standard pricing. Prices can also differ because of taxes, country settings, or package billing. Netflix explains country and billing differences here.

“My show has a lock icon.”
The title is likely unavailable on the ad-supported plan because of licensing restrictions. Switching to an ad-free plan may restore access if that title is included there.

“Can I change country or use a VPN to keep Basic?”
This is not a reliable workaround. Netflix says plans and catalogs vary by country and documents regional errors associated with VPN use. Customers who move countries may need to cancel and sign up again in the new country; see its VPN guidance.
The verdict
Netflix did eliminate its cheapest ad-free Basic plan in the US and UK, but it did not newly eliminate it in 2026. The US phaseout was reported in 2024, and Netflix’s current documentation confirms that Basic remains discontinued.
The immediate choice is between the cheaper Standard with ads plan and the more expensive Standard ad-free plan. The ad tier saves money, but it brings interruptions, possible title exclusions, device limitations, and no extra-member option. For viewers who want uninterrupted access, Standard is now Netflix’s lowest-priced ad-free US plan.
