Richard Gadd’s seven-part adaptation of his one-man play shifts between dark comedy and psychological distress, gradually exposing the shame and trauma beneath its central story of stalking. It is compelling partly because Donny Dunn is not written as a flawless victim—and upsetting because the series asks viewers to sit with abuse, self-doubt and choices that are difficult to explain away.
What is Baby Reindeer about?
Netflix’s limited series follows Donny Dunn (Gadd), a comedian and bartender whose interaction with Martha (Jessica Gunning) develops into stalking. It also follows Donny’s relationship with Teri (Nava Mau) and the buried experiences that shape how he understands himself and what is happening to him. The story is written and performed by Gadd, who adapted his one-man play for television. Netflix’s series overview describes it as a dark, dramatic and sometimes funny true-story series.
That tonal mix is not a decorative flourish. Comedy can make a scene feel briefly manageable, then leave the viewer more unsettled when the harm underneath comes into focus. The series does not offer a clean division between funny moments and painful ones; the shifts are part of how it depicts Donny’s confusion and discomfort.
Why does the series work so well?
Donny is not an uncomplicated victim
Gadd’s writing makes room for contradiction. Donny’s decisions can be frustrating, and the series does not turn his suffering into proof that he always responds sensibly. Instead, it asks viewers to reconsider what they have seen as more of his history emerges. That approach makes the drama less comfortable than a straightforward account of a villain and a blameless target, but it gives Donny’s perspective greater emotional complexity.

The revelations change the meaning of earlier scenes
The story’s gradual disclosure of Donny’s trauma changes the context in which his behaviour can be read. What might initially seem like indecision or self-sabotage becomes harder to judge once the series shows what he is carrying. This is a critical interpretation of the structure, not a claim that every viewer will respond in the same way.
Gadd’s performance keeps the contradictions visible
Gadd plays Donny with a mix of self-consciousness, need and unease. He does not present the character as someone who has neatly understood his own story. That performance supports the series’ central tension: the viewer can recognize harm while still finding Donny’s choices difficult, and can feel sympathy without being asked to treat him as faultless.

Is Baby Reindeer hard to watch?
It can be. The series depicts stalking, sexual abuse, shame and trauma, and its shifts into comedy do not remove the distress of that material. The Guardian’s review of 11 April 2024 singled out episode four as especially chilling; that is one critic’s assessment, not an objective ranking or a guarantee of how any individual viewer will react. Read the review.
If those subjects are difficult for you, the content itself is a reasonable basis for deciding whether or when to watch. The show’s dark humour and emotional intensity sit side by side, rather than providing a reliably lighter stretch between disturbing scenes.

Is Baby Reindeer based on a true story?
It is autobiographically grounded, but it is a dramatized television adaptation, not a documentary record. In an April 2024 interview, Gadd described the experiences behind the work as severe stalking and abuse, saying: “I was severely stalked and severely abused.” The Guardian interview supports describing the story as rooted in experiences he has discussed; it does not independently verify every scene or allegation depicted onscreen.
The “true story” framing later became part of a legal dispute. A Guardian report dated 30 September 2024 said a US judge had allowed Fiona Harvey’s defamation suit against Netflix to proceed and had criticized the programme’s true-story presentation. That report describes an interim stage, not a final finding or the ultimate disposition of the case. It does not settle the factual accuracy of every part of the series.

Why this is a review, not a verdict on real people
The distinction between a dramatized character and a real person matters here. Gadd said he did not want audiences to identify the real people associated with the story, and reporting after the series’ release described viewers trying to do so. The Guardian reported on those identification attempts. Speculation about identities is not a substitute for evidence, and repeating it risks turning a drama about harm into an invitation to target people.
Netflix’s overview reports six Emmy wins from 11 nominations for the series, along with a Gotham TV Award and a Television Critics Association Award. Those award details are listed by Netflix.
