In the United States, Standard with Ads now costs $8.99 per month and offers 1080p video, two simultaneous streams and downloads for supported titles. The important qualification is timing: those major subscriber upgrades arrived in 2023, while Netflix’s 2026 push is focused heavily on improving its advertising business rather than removing the ads viewers see.

Three upgrades changed the value proposition
When Netflix launched Basic with Ads in the U.S. on November 3, 2022, it was a deliberately stripped-down option. It cost $6.99 per month, capped video at 720p/HD, allowed one supported stream, offered no downloads and carried roughly four to five minutes of advertising per hour. Netflix also warned that a limited number of movies and shows would be unavailable because of licensing restrictions. The original announcement is at Netflix’s launch notice.
In late 2023, Netflix added the features that make today’s plan feel less like a trial product:

- Resolution increased from 720p to 1080p.

- Downloads became available for supported content.
Netflix documented those changes in its one-year update. They are the clearest evidence that the ad tier became materially better, but they are not a brand-new 2026 rollout.
What Netflix changed in 2026
For subscribers
Netflix is testing personalized ad loads and frequency caps that can adjust delivery based on viewing behavior. That could make advertising more intelligently managed, but testing is not a promise that every member will see fewer interruptions. Netflix has not announced that Standard with Ads is becoming ad-free.
The wider Netflix service also continues to add games, live programming and new discovery features. A mobile redesign and Clips rollout announced for July 14, 2026 was identified for Brazil, France, Germany, Korea and Mexico; it should not be treated as a universal U.S. benefit. Details are in Netflix’s mobile announcement.

For advertisers
Most of Netflix’s 2026 announcements concern the machinery behind the ads:
- Audience targeting through Amazon DSP, including Amazon shopping, browsing and streaming signals.
- Expanded Yahoo DSP support and Netflix’s own Audience Insights and Reach Curve APIs.
- Frequency management across streaming services.
- Data clean-room work with Snowflake and AWS, with Infosum planned by the end of 2026.
- Programmatic buying for pause ads and live programming.
- AI tools for adapting creative to vertical video and pause formats, plus experiments placing creative into the worlds of Netflix shows and films.
- Planned inventory in vertical video, podcasts and other placements, with additional expansion scheduled for 2027.
Netflix describes these developments in its ads-suite update and its 2026 Upfront announcement. They may help Netflix sell ads more effectively; they are not equivalent to higher picture quality, more streams or a guaranteed lighter ad load for viewers.
What you still give up
Ads remain the defining compromise
Standard with Ads still interrupts shows and films. Netflix’s frequency-cap work is described as testing and optimization, not a universal reduction in commercial time.

The catalog may not be identical
Licensing restrictions can keep particular movies or series off the ad-supported tier. The unavailable list changes, so the exact number should not be assumed. If a specific title matters, check its availability while signed into the account you plan to use.
Downloads have conditions
Downloads do not mean every title can be saved offline. Title eligibility, device limits, expiration rules and account restrictions can apply.
Phone-to-TV casting is blocked
Netflix’s Help Center says casting or mirroring from a mobile device to use a television as the display is unavailable on an ad-supported experience. That can be a decisive limitation for viewers who routinely send Netflix from a phone to a TV. See Netflix’s device-compatibility guidance.

Older devices may not work
Some televisions and streaming devices cannot run the ad-supported experience if their Netflix app or operating system cannot be updated. On a compatible device, open Netflix, open the menu, choose the profile icon or Get Help (the label varies), then choose Plan Compatibility. If that option is missing, Netflix says the device cannot be used with the ad-supported experience.
No premium picture or household capacity
The tier tops out at 1080p and two simultaneous streams. Viewers seeking 4K or HDR, or households with more than two active screens, need an ad-free plan with those capabilities.
Who should choose it?
Standard with Ads is a sensible choice when:
- Keeping the monthly bill low matters more than uninterrupted viewing.
- 1080p is sufficient and two streams cover the household.
- You can tolerate ads.
- You value mobile downloads on supported titles.
- Your television or streaming device is compatible and you do not rely on phone casting.
Pay for an ad-free tier instead when:
- Commercial interruptions are a deal-breaker.
- You need 4K, HDR or the highest available audio and video quality.
- More than two people regularly watch at once.
- You need the broadest possible catalog without licensing-based exclusions.
- You cast or mirror Netflix from a phone to a television.
- Your current smart TV or streaming hardware is too old for the ad-supported app.
How to decide whether the savings are worth it
- Check the live U.S. price difference. Netflix pricing is volatile; use the official plan selector rather than an old comparison.
- Count simultaneous viewers. Two supported streams is the ceiling for Standard with Ads.
- Decide whether 1080p meets your needs. If you have a 4K television and care about HDR, the ad tier cannot provide the premium format.
- Test your devices and habits. Confirm compatibility and consider whether the lack of casting or mirroring would disrupt how you watch.
- Price the interruption, not just the subscription. The lower bill is valuable only if the ad breaks and any missing titles are acceptable to you.
The bigger Netflix strategy
Netflix is making the ad tier more attractive to encourage adoption while building a substantial advertising operation. At its May 2026 Upfront, the company said its ad-supported service reached more than 250 million global monthly active viewers and that more than 80% of ads-plan members were active each week. Those are Netflix-reported engagement figures, and “monthly active viewers” is not the same metric as paying subscribers.

The company also said the ads plan is scheduled to expand to 15 additional countries in 2027. Future inventory in vertical video, podcasts, pause ads, live programming and Tudum will broaden where advertising can appear. Those plans make the business better positioned for advertisers; they do not change the fundamental viewer trade-off today.
The verdict
Yes—Netflix’s ad-supported plan is much better than the one that launched. Moving to 1080p, two streams and supported downloads turned it into a capable budget subscription. But the headline needs a date check: those biggest consumer improvements arrived in 2023, and Netflix’s 2026 momentum is largely about targeting, buying tools, measurement and new ad formats.
Choose Standard with Ads if lower cost, 1080p and two-screen viewing outweigh commercial breaks. Choose an ad-free plan if uninterrupted viewing, 4K, casting, a fuller catalog or larger household capacity matters more.
