Netflix’s “86 games by year’s end” figure was a December 2023 forecast, not a current catalog count. Netflix said the games would be included with memberships, without ads, in-app purchases, or separate game fees, and that nearly 90 more were in development. Since then, Netflix Games has grown beyond its mobile-first launch to include licensed games, titles tied to Netflix shows and films, and experiments with playing on TVs and computers. It is a useful subscription extra for some players—not a substitute for a console or dedicated gaming service.
What Netflix meant by 86 games
In a December 2023 update, Netflix said it expected to have 86 games available by the end of that year, with nearly 90 additional titles in development. That was a company forecast about games expected to be available, not an enduring promise that the catalog would contain 86 titles everywhere or a count that applies in 2026. The announcement does not, on its own, establish that exactly 86 games were playable in every market on December 31, 2023.
Netflix also said games were included with memberships and would have no ads, in-app purchases, or separate game fees in the Netflix version. That means access is bundled with a paid Netflix membership; it does not mean the games are available without a subscription. A game may also be sold separately elsewhere, and access through Netflix is not the same as owning a standalone copy. Netflix’s 2023 games update is the source for the forecast and the terms it described.
How Netflix Games developed
2021: A mobile-first launch
Netflix introduced games as an extension of its existing entertainment subscription, beginning on mobile devices. The initial model relied on familiar app-store downloads: find a title through Netflix, download it from the relevant store, then authenticate with a Netflix account. Netflix framed games as another way to experience entertainment, including interactive titles connected to its shows. Its mobile launch announcement describes that starting point.

Netflix also began building development capacity rather than relying only on titles made by outside partners. In September 2021, it announced its acquisition of Night School Studio, known for Oxenfree. Netflix later acquired Next Games and Boss Fight Entertainment, and announced plans to establish internal development teams, including in Finland and Los Angeles. These moves sit alongside licensing and publishing partnerships; they do not mean every game in the service is made by a Netflix-owned studio. Netflix’s Night School announcement documents the first of those acquisitions.
2023 onward: A wider catalog and more screens
By 2023, Netflix was describing a broader mix of games, including titles from its studios and outside developers. It highlighted Oxenfree II: Lost Signals and Netflix Stories: Love Is Blind among its releases. The same update described testing games on TVs and computers, a significant shift from a service experienced only through mobile downloads.
Netflix has continued to promote mobile and TV additions, including in its 2025 games preview. The direction is broader than the original phone-and-tablet launch, but a title’s availability on mobile does not establish that it can be streamed on a TV or played on a computer. Supported devices, markets, and controls vary by experience.

What kinds of games are in the catalog?
Netflix stories and entertainment tie-ins
Some games extend Netflix entertainment properties or use interactive storytelling. The catalog has included Stranger Things games and Netflix Stories titles, while the 2023 update highlighted Oxenfree II: Lost Signals. These give fans another way to engage with familiar worlds, although a Netflix connection alone does not indicate a particular genre or level of production.
Licensed and partner games
Netflix has also offered recognizable games from outside developers and publishers. Past catalog examples include Grand Theft Auto titles, Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2, Into the Breach, Bloons TD 6, Hades, Braid: Anniversary Edition, and Football Manager Mobile. This illustrates that the service is not limited to games based on Netflix shows. It does not mean every listed title remains available in every country today.
Mobile, TV, and cloud-played games
Mobile downloads remain part of Netflix Games, while selected games and tests extend to TVs and computers through streaming. Netflix’s catalog is the practical place to check what is currently listed, but availability can depend on title, country, device, and profile. A TV or cloud experience can require compatible hardware, a supported control method, and a stable internet connection. Do not assume that every game in the service works on every screen.

How to start playing
On a phone or tablet
- Open the Netflix app or browse the Netflix Games catalog and select a game available for your device and region.
- Follow the link to download the game from the appropriate mobile app store.
- Open the installed game and sign in or authenticate with your Netflix account; choose a profile if prompted.
- Check the game’s device, age-rating, and controller details before playing. Exact prompts and labels can differ by operating system, app version, profile, and region.
The game download itself may use device storage. Netflix’s mobile-games help page provides current access guidance and notes an important save-data limitation: progress from previously released versions of a game cannot be transferred to the Netflix version.

TV and computer play is not a universal mode for the full catalog. Check Netflix’s current listing and support information for the specific game, market, and device. Depending on the experience, you may need a compatible TV or streaming device, a supported smartphone controller app or another compatible controller, and a reliable broadband connection for cloud play. Streaming quality and input response can vary with network conditions.
Is the 86-game target a verified historical count?
The defensible wording is that Netflix projected 86 available games by the end of 2023. Its announcement supports that forecast, but does not provide a dated, market-by-market audit of the catalog on the final day of the year. Nor should the figure be treated as the size of the present catalog.

Netflix’s official catalog changes as titles are added or removed. Any present-day total needs a date and a counting method: which market was checked, whether mobile and cloud listings were combined, whether multiple platform versions count once, and whether upcoming games were excluded. An independent tracker reported a 102-title total in 2026, but that is an external tally rather than an official Netflix count. What is included—and what is not
- Included: Access to the Netflix version of a game as part of an eligible Netflix membership, with no separate game fee under the model Netflix described.
- Not the same as ownership: Access depends on the Netflix service and whether a title remains available. Downloading a game does not establish permanent access if it leaves the catalog.
- Not necessarily the same edition: A Netflix version may be distinct from a version purchased elsewhere. Netflix says saved data from previously released versions cannot be transferred to its version.
- Not guaranteed across every account or location: Availability can vary with country, device, profile restrictions, and age rating. A title visible in one market may not be playable in another.
- No blanket TV or cloud support: Mobile availability does not guarantee that a title can be played on a TV or computer.
Who is Netflix Games for?

How Netflix Games differs from dedicated gaming services
Netflix Games is best understood as a games catalog bundled into an entertainment subscription, not as a direct equivalent of every gaming subscription. Xbox Game Pass is organized around console, PC, and cloud gaming; Apple Arcade is a dedicated catalog for supported Apple devices; PlayStation Plus is oriented around PlayStation consoles; Nintendo Switch Online serves Nintendo Switch owners with online and other membership benefits. Steam is a PC storefront where players generally obtain games individually rather than through Netflix’s entertainment bundle.

The right comparison depends on what a reader already owns and wants to play. Someone who already pays for Netflix and wants occasional mobile or narrative games may value the bundle. Someone seeking a large console or PC library, platform-specific features, or durable access to purchases should compare dedicated services or individual game purchases instead. Current prices and precise catalog terms vary, so check each provider’s official offering before subscribing.

Why Netflix is investing in games
Games can extend the life of Netflix properties, give subscribers another form of engagement, and broaden the service’s entertainment offering. Acquisitions, internal teams, and partnerships suggest an effort to develop and publish games as well as distribute them. Netflix has presented gaming as a long-term commitment; Axios’s 2023 reporting provides context for that positioning.
Retention and subscriber value are plausible strategic benefits, but they are not proof that games alone caused a change in subscriptions or that Netflix entered gaming for a single reason. A 2022 Axios report discussed the strategy amid subscriber pressures, but that context should not be mistaken for evidence of a sole motive. Netflix’s own evolution—from mobile downloads toward TV and cloud experiments—indicates an ambition to connect games more closely to its broader entertainment service, though its commercial results cannot be inferred from catalog size alone.
Is Netflix Games a serious gaming alternative?
It is a meaningful bonus for current Netflix subscribers and a broader mobile-games offering than a handful of promotional tie-ins. Its appeal rests on convenience, a changing mix of licensed and Netflix-linked titles, and inclusion in an existing subscription. The TV and cloud direction could make the service more relevant in living rooms, but support remains dependent on game, device, and market.
