Netflix’s February 1, 2024 announcement promised a broad global year of programming: returning hits such as Squid Game and Bridgerton, star-led films, new dramas, international productions, unscripted shows, sports and games. It was a preview, not a complete catalogue or a guarantee that every announced title would arrive on a particular date. This is a look back at what Netflix said to expect in 2024—not a guide to its current lineup.
What Netflix announced in February 2024
Netflix presented its 2024 plan on February 1 as a global slate of series, films and games, with separate lists and country-specific versions. The announcement covered more than scripted movies and television: its wider programming included reality and documentary series, sports programming and live events. The company’s announcement and Tudum preview are the primary references for what was on the schedule at the time.
The word “gargantuan” describes the breadth of the announcement, not a Netflix-reported count or a guarantee of quality. The more useful story is how the lineup mixed familiar franchises with new, high-profile projects and programming from across the world. PerthNow’s February 2 roundup captured some prominent titles, but it was a selection rather than a full accounting of Netflix’s global plan.
The returning series that anchored the slate
Established shows gave subscribers recognizable reasons to return, while several were still listed only for 2024 in the February preview. The table below records the timing Netflix announced then; it should not be read as a current schedule.

New series: science fiction, crime and prestige drama
3 Body Problem
The most conspicuous science-fiction bet was 3 Body Problem, an eight-episode adaptation inspired by Liu Cixin’s trilogy. David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo created the series; Netflix’s preview listed its release for March 21, 2024. The premise turns on humanity encountering an existential threat with roots in a Chinese scientist’s decision during the Cultural Revolution. Netflix’s series background sets out the adaptation and release details. A later announcement said the show would continue with additional episodes; that May 2024 development was separate from the original slate announcement (Netflix announcement).

Adaptations and crime stories
Ripley, starring Andrew Scott, Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn, offered a new screen interpretation of Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley material. The Gentlemen extended Guy Ritchie’s film world into a television series. Other literary or real-world hooks included David E. Kelley’s A Man in Full, adapted from Tom Wolfe’s novel, and Bodkin, a darkly comic mystery about true-crime podcasters.

The slate also included The Perfect Couple, a murder mystery disrupted by a wedding, and the spy thriller Black Doves, starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw. Eric paired Benedict Cumberbatch with a thriller, while American Primeval was a Western drama featuring Betty Gilpin and Taylor Kitsch. The Decameron and Supacell broadened the mix further. These were varied creative propositions, not evidence that any title would become a hit; the announcement established the projects and their intended place in the schedule, not their eventual reception.

Movies built around stars, franchises and familiar genres
Netflix’s film lineup leaned on recognizable performers and concepts, but it covered more than one kind of release. The titles below are highlights from the company’s 2024 movies guide and full preview.
Action, science fiction and spectacle
- Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F brought Eddie Murphy back as Axel Foley; Netflix’s preview listed July 3, 2024.
- Back in Action paired Cameron Diaz, returning to acting, with Jamie Foxx.
- Atlas starred Jennifer Lopez in a science-fiction story involving artificial intelligence.
- The Union cast Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry in an action-comedy.
- Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver continued Zack Snyder’s science-fiction saga.
Comedy and romance
- A Family Affair paired Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron in a romantic comedy.
- Hit Man, directed by Richard Linklater and starring Glen Powell, was inspired by a real-life story.
- Unfrosted: The Pop-Tarts Story marked Jerry Seinfeld’s feature directing debut, using the rivalry behind the toaster pastry as its comic premise.
- Irish Wish starred Lindsay Lohan in another Netflix romantic comedy.
Fantasy, drama and true-story material
- Damsel starred Millie Bobby Brown in a fantasy adventure involving a dragon.
- The Deliverance, directed by Lee Daniels, was a supernatural drama starring Andra Day, Glenn Close and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
- Scoop dramatized the Prince Andrew Newsnight interview.
- Six Triple Eight, directed by Tyler Perry and led by Kerry Washington, was a historical drama.
- The Beautiful Game, starring Bill Nighy, was connected to the Homeless World Cup.

The February preview mixed firm-looking calendar dates with month or year windows. The following are the specific dates highlighted in that preview, not a promise that dates were universal across territories.

Other projects were announced without a precise date, or with only a broad 2024 window. Netflix’s preview and its series and film guides are historical records of what was listed then. A planned date can change, and a title’s availability may differ by market; an announcement alone does not establish a simultaneous worldwide launch.
International programming was part of the main story
Netflix framed the slate globally and published country-specific programming lists, including for Korea, Japan, India, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. Its separate 2024 Korean-content announcement illustrates why an English-language highlights list is not a complete account of the company’s offer. Korean dramas and films, anime, European productions and Latin American titles formed part of the broader international picture. The country lists were selective previews, not a claim that every title would be available at the same time in every territory.

Documentaries, reality, sports and games beyond scripted entertainment
For viewers drawn to nonfiction, Netflix’s 2024 slate was not limited to scripted film and television. The broader announcement included documentary and unscripted programming, sports-related shows and events, and games. It highlighted returning sports series Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Break Point, reality programming including Love Is Blind, and The Netflix Slam as a live sports event. On the games side, Netflix named titles including Hades, Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit and Sonic Mania Plus. These categories are part of the company’s announcement, even though movie-and-TV roundups often leave them out.
The inclusion of sports and documentary programming matters to the subscription question: Netflix was pitching a stream of different kinds of viewing, not only a handful of prestige dramas or blockbuster films. But the announcement does not establish how often a particular viewer would use those offerings, nor does a long list prove that each title was equally prominent or widely available.
What the slate said about Netflix—and what it did not
The plan combined familiar franchises with originals and adaptations, celebrity-led movies, international productions and unscripted formats. That breadth can serve viewers who want a steady rotation across genres and languages. For franchise fans, titles such as Squid Game, Bridgerton and Rebel Moon were obvious draws; science-fiction viewers had 3 Body Problem and Atlas; documentary and sports audiences could look to the nonfiction and event programming. A famous cast or established property can create attention, but neither guarantees quality or audience success.

There are trade-offs. A wide slate offers choice, but it also spreads attention across many titles. Known properties may feel like safer audience bets than new projects, while a schedule of announcements is not proof of delivery, breakout popularity or value for every subscriber. Whether Netflix made sense to keep or start depended on an individual’s preferred genres, viewing habits and local catalog—not simply the number of titles on the slate. No conclusion about the service’s August 2026 price or current catalog follows from a 2024 preview.
