Netflix did not formally declare war on Hollywood. The phrase describes a clash between two release systems: cinemas depend on a period of exclusivity, while Netflix built its appeal around watching on demand. The dispute became highly visible in 2017, and later deals and announcements show that streaming and theatrical release are not always opposites.
What was the Cannes flashpoint?
The immediate conflict centered on Okja, Bong Joon Ho’s film. Netflix announced in 2016 that it would premiere globally on the service in 2017 and also have a limited, simultaneous theatrical release in the United States. That was a specific plan for Okja, not a statement about every Netflix film or every territory.

In April 2017, Cannes selected Okja and Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) for competition. Netflix said both would launch on its service globally that year. Ted Sarandos described Cannes as “a prestigious forum” for the films’ premieres. The issue was whether films with planned streaming availability alongside at least some cinema screenings fit the festival’s expectations for a theatrical premiere.
Cannes’s objection was about the terms of exhibition, not whether the films were artistically worthy. The episode made a practical question hard to ignore: when a film is available at home at the same time as in a theater, what does a cinema premiere mean?

Why did release windows matter so much?
The cinema model sells an exclusive experience
A theatrical window is the period when a film is available in cinemas before reaching later outlets such as home entertainment or subscription streaming. That gap gives theaters an exclusive opportunity to attract audiences; it also helps make a cinema visit feel like an event rather than one option among several. If a title is simultaneously available at home, audiences can choose the convenience of their own schedule and screen instead.
The exact length of a window is not a fixed rule for all films. In December 2025, the Associated Press described a shift from a historical norm of about 90 days toward roughly 45 days, while noting that contemporary windows vary from film to film. Those figures are AP’s reporting on changing practice, not a universal current standard.

Streaming sells control over time and place
For Netflix, making a film available on the service offers viewers a different proposition: watch where and when it suits you. That can broaden access, but it does not provide the same period of cinema exclusivity. The dispute is therefore about timing and audience choice as much as it is about the screen on which a film appears.
How did Netflix’s scheduling philosophy challenge the old model?
The company had already challenged conventional release habits in television. In a 2017 retrospective on House of Cards, Netflix said it released all episodes of the series at once in 2013. Cindy Holland, then Netflix’s Vice President of Original Content, described the logic this way: “For years our lives had to fit around television, now it’s the other way around.”

That approach made viewer control part of Netflix’s identity. Applied to films, the same preference points toward immediate on-demand access; theatrical exhibition, by contrast, relies on viewers going to a particular venue during a period when that venue has the film to itself. The two systems can coexist, but they do not offer the same release experience.
Does Netflix still release movies in theaters?
There is no single release pattern for every title associated with Netflix. The distinctions between Netflix originals, films Netflix licenses after another distributor’s run, and films from a studio involved in a proposed transaction matter. Announcements about one category should not be treated as proof of policy across the others.

| Release situation | Sequence or plan | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| Okja (Netflix original) | Netflix announced a global 2017 service premiere alongside a limited, day-and-date U.S. theatrical release. | A streaming-first title could also have a limited cinema release, though not an exclusive theatrical window. |
| Sony feature films licensed to Netflix | The January 2026 multi-year agreement places Netflix availability after each film’s full theatrical and home-entertainment runs. Netflix announced a gradual territorial rollout beginning later in 2026, with full global availability expected in early 2029. | Netflix can serve as a later distribution window without replacing the film’s earlier theatrical run. |
| Warner Bros. films under Netflix’s proposed acquisition | In December 2025, Netflix said that, if the proposed acquisition closed, it would preserve Warner Bros. theatrical releases; a separate announcement promised industry-standard theatrical windows. | This was a conditional future commitment tied to a proposed transaction, not evidence that the deal closed or the policy was implemented. |
The Sony agreement is a licensing arrangement, not a description of how Netflix plans to release its own original films. Its announced terms show that a film can pass through theatrical and home-entertainment windows before arriving on Netflix.

Netflix leadership’s position had a new complication in December 2025. In a communication hosted by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos said theatrical distribution had not been a Netflix priority because it was not part of the company’s business. In the same communication, they said Netflix would preserve Warner Bros. theatrical releases if the proposed acquisition closed. Netflix separately announced that Warner Bros. films would receive theatrical releases with industry-standard windows.

Those statements described a proposed transaction and commitments conditional on its closing. The announcements alone do not establish the transaction’s closing date, regulatory outcome, or whether the promised distribution policy was implemented by October 8, 2026. It would be inaccurate to report the commitments as completed changes to Warner Bros.’ release practices.
So, did Netflix declare war on Hollywood?
“Declared war” is a metaphor for a sustained industrial dispute, not a documented formal campaign. Netflix’s model questioned the assumption that a film should reach cinemas first and remain exclusive there for a substantial period. Exhibitors and festivals had reasons to defend that exclusivity: it underpins cinema’s role as a public premiere venue and gives theaters time to draw audiences before a title moves elsewhere.
But the later examples resist a simple streaming-versus-cinema story. A Netflix-associated film can have a limited theatrical release; a licensed studio film can arrive on Netflix after its cinema and home-entertainment runs; and the Warner Bros. statements concerned a conditional proposal rather than an established policy. The central tension is not that theaters and streaming cannot share a film. It is that they compete over when audiences can see it, where they see it, and whether the cinema gets an exclusive first window.
