Netflix removed Carl Weber’s The Family Business from its U.S. catalog on October 24, 2025. The original headline described it as a five-season series, but that wording is now outdated: Netflix carried only Seasons 1–4, Season 5 premiered on BET+, and the series has since expanded to six seasons.
If you are looking for a family-centered crime drama built around loyalty, succession, rivalries, and a criminal empire disguised as a legitimate business, The Family Business remains a strong recommendation. The important correction is that Netflix is no longer the place to begin watching it in the United States.
What happened to The Family Business on Netflix?
Netflix’s U.S. licensing window for The Family Business ended on October 24, 2025, approximately two years after Seasons 1–4 arrived on the service in October 2023.
That means articles telling viewers to “watch it before it disappears” are now historical rather than current. The removal has already happened. Netflix should not be described as a current viewing option for the U.S. series unless the title returns under a new licensing agreement.

There is also an important catalog distinction: Netflix had Seasons 1–4, not all five seasons. Season 5 was a BET+ season and was not announced as a Netflix release. The show subsequently received a sixth season, making the old “five-season crime drama” description incomplete as of August 12, 2026.
Why this crime drama is worth finding elsewhere
The Family Business follows the Duncan family, whose public-facing enterprise is an exotic-car dealership in New York. After hours, however, the family is involved in criminal business. That split identity gives the series its central tension: the Duncans must preserve the appearance of respectability while managing violence, threats, betrayals, and competition from other forces.
This is a family-crime drama rather than a conventional police procedural. Its major conflicts grow out of questions such as:
- Who is loyal to the Duncan family—and who is protecting a personal interest?
- Who should inherit control of the family operation?
- Can the family remain united when business pressure turns into personal betrayal?
- How long can a legitimate public business conceal an illicit private one?
The show’s appeal comes from the collision between family obligation and criminal power. The Duncans are not simply trying to evade law enforcement; they are also trying to survive internal succession struggles and rivalries that can be just as dangerous as outside threats.
The cast and creative background
Carl Weber created the television series, wrote the source novels, served as showrunner, and executive-produced the adaptation. The program is based on Weber’s bestselling family-crime novel, which was identified as the first book in a related series.

Ernie Hudson leads the cast as family patriarch L.C. Duncan and also serves as an executive producer. Valarie Pettiford is another principal cast member associated with the Duncan family.
The series was produced in connection with Tri Destined Studios and Urban Books Media. BET announced the original eight-episode first season in 2018, while Paramount’s series materials presented the program as an adaptation of Weber’s novel and identified Hudson among its leading performers.
That source lineage makes the show particularly useful for viewers who enjoy seeing how a crime-fiction premise changes when it is expanded into a serialized television family saga.

The book behind the television series
Readers who discover the show may want to start with Carl Weber’s The Family Business book, the novel that inspired the series. The book is a natural companion to the program because it provides the source premise and Weber’s original version of the family-crime world.
It should not be treated as a scene-by-scene substitute for the television continuity, however. An adaptation can change chronology, emphasis, characterization, and plot development as it moves from a novel to a multi-season series.
How many seasons does The Family Business have?
As of August 12, 2026, the series has six seasons.
| Season | What viewers should know | U.S. platform context |
|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | The original eight-episode season introduced the Duncan family and its dual legitimate-criminal operation. | Initially a BET series; later included in Netflix’s U.S. Seasons 1–4 package. |
| Seasons 2–4 | Expanded the family conflict, criminal stakes, rivalries, and succession pressures. | Available on Netflix in the United States from October 2023 until October 24, 2025. |
| Season 5 | Ten episodes premiered on BET+ on July 4, 2024, with the finale scheduled for August 29, 2024. | It was not part of Netflix’s four-season U.S. catalog. |
| Season 6 | Ten episodes premiered on BET+ on October 23, 2025, with a finale scheduled for December 18, 2025. | The series now extends beyond the five-season description used in older coverage. |
The season count matters if you are deciding where to begin. Someone who watched four seasons on Netflix did not necessarily have access to the complete series there. To continue beyond the former Netflix package, viewers need to check the current BET+ or Paramount-related availability rather than assume Netflix included every season.

Who should watch it?
The Family Business is a good fit for viewers who prefer crime stories where the central pressure comes from a powerful family rather than a single detective or investigative team. It is especially suited to audiences who enjoy:
- crime dynasties and multigenerational power struggles;
- stories about succession and control of a family enterprise;
- legitimate businesses concealing illegal operations;
- ensemble dramas driven by loyalty, betrayal, and rivalry;
- adaptations of crime novels with room for long-form television development.
It is less useful for viewers specifically seeking a tightly focused police investigation. The Duncans’ family relationships and criminal enterprise are the narrative center of gravity.

The original headline was understandable at the time it circulated: Season 5 had been announced, and the show was commonly discussed as a five-season crime drama. But it combined two different facts in a misleading way.

First, Netflix’s U.S. catalog consisted of Seasons 1–4. Second, Season 5 belonged to the BET+ release path. So it was not accurate to say that Netflix was removing “all five seasons.” The more precise description is:
Netflix removed Seasons 1–4 of The Family Business in the United States on October 24, 2025, while the fifth season was a BET+ release.
Because Season 6 later arrived on BET+, even “five-season series” is no longer current. Readers should treat that wording as a reference to the show’s earlier status, not its present total.

Carl Weber’s The Family Business is still worth seeking out if you want a serialized crime drama about a family balancing a respectable exotic-car dealership with a dangerous criminal operation. Netflix’s two-year U.S. window is over, and it did not include the complete series in the first place. The show now has six seasons, with later installments tied to BET+ and current listings pointing viewers toward Paramount-related access and digital purchase options.
Start by checking the current season-by-season listing, then decide whether a subscription or digital purchase makes more sense for the number of episodes you plan to watch.
