Netflix Canada previewed three productions at a January 2025 showcase: an untitled documentary about the Montreal Expos’ controversial 2004 relocation to Washington, D.C.; the Inuit comedy-drama North of North; and Mae Martin’s Ontario-set thriller Wayward. Netflix gave the projects a broad 2025 window, but no exact premiere dates.
What Netflix actually previewed
The showcase followed Netflix’s broader 2025 programming preview and featured Netflix Canada content executives Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury. It presented an early look at three Canadian productions, not a definitive list of every Canadian title Netflix planned to release in 2025. The contemporary report on the event was published January 30, 2025, after the showcase earlier that week.

The Montreal Expos documentary revisits a painful baseball chapter
The documentary will examine the Expos’ decline and their controversial relocation from Montreal to Washington, D.C., in 2004. The franchise became the Washington Nationals, while many Montreal supporters were left with anger, grief and a lasting sense of betrayal.
That history gives the project more than a sports angle. The move touches civic identity, ownership and business decisions, the relationship between a city and its team, and the memories of fans who watched the franchise disappear. Netflix executives also pointed to the appeal of sports documentaries, but the preview did not provide audience data proving a broader trend.
Who was expected to participate?
The preview identified former Expos vice-president David Samson, former Expos star Vladimir Guerrero and Montreal-area fans affected by the relocation. Guerrero here means the former Expos player Vladimir Guerrero, not Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

These participants suggest a combination of insider perspective, player experience and fan testimony. Netflix did not say that the film would deliver a definitive legal or historical verdict, and the announced material did not establish its full chronology or editorial position.

- No final title had been announced.
- The preview did not specify whether it would be a feature documentary or a series.
- No director, runtime, complete participant list or exact premiere date was provided.
- The report did not establish that a public trailer or full footage was available.
It was therefore an upcoming project, not a film viewers could already watch.
North of North brings an Inuit story to a CBC-Netflix partnership
North of North is a comedy-drama created by Inuit filmmakers Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, who were associated with the film The Grizzlies. The series centres on modern Inuit life and was produced with CBC.

Distribution was split between the partners. At the time of the preview, the series was already streaming on CBC Gem, while Netflix planned a worldwide release later in spring 2025. That distinction matters: it was presented as a Canadian production and CBC collaboration, not simply as a Netflix-only series.
Netflix framed the show as a specifically Canadian and Inuit story with emotional themes that could travel internationally. The announcement did not provide a precise Netflix launch day.

Wayward is Mae Martin’s 2003 Ontario thriller
Created by Toronto-based comedian and actor Mae Martin, Wayward is set in a small town in Ontario in 2003. Its story follows a police officer and two troubled teenagers who uncover a deeper conspiracy.

Inspiration and production
Martin said the series was inspired in part by a childhood friend who had been sent to a rehabilitation school in the United States and later escaped. Martin also drew on research. That background should not be read as proof that Wayward is a true story or a direct dramatization of one person’s case.
The series was produced by Objective Fiction and Toronto-based Sphere Media. The cast previewed at the event included Martin, Toni Collette, Patrick J. Adams and Sarah Gadon.
Trailer status
Netflix showed the first Wayward trailer at the showcase. The report confirms that event screening, but does not establish that every piece of preview footage was publicly available online at that point.

Release timing and unanswered questions
Netflix associated all three productions with its 2025 schedule, but it had not supplied exact premiere dates in the January preview. Readers should distinguish a broad year-long window from a confirmed launch date.
At that stage, the following details were still open:
- the Expos documentary’s final title and format;
- its director, runtime and complete list of interview subjects;
- the exact Netflix release dates for all three productions;
- whether every project would be available in every Netflix territory;
- public access to a trailer or additional footage for the Expos film.
Any later title, trailer or release announcement would need to be treated as a separate update rather than folded into what Netflix disclosed at the showcase.
Why this small slate matters
The three projects show Netflix combining recognizable Canadian sports history with scripted stories rooted in Canadian and Indigenous settings. The Expos documentary addresses a still-unresolved piece of Montreal’s cultural memory; North of North foregrounds Inuit creators and contemporary Inuit life; and Wayward uses a distinctly Ontario setting for a thriller led by a Canadian creator.
