Netflix still allows sharing within one household. If someone regularly watches from another home, Netflix’s stated policy requires that person to use an eligible extra-member slot or a separate account. Household members can travel with Netflix, although a television or unfamiliar network may trigger verification.
Netflix password sharing: the current rule
Netflix says an account is intended for people who live together in one household. Sharing one login with a roommate or family member at the same address remains permitted, subject to the plan’s profile, device and simultaneous-stream limits.

Regular use by a friend, partner, adult child or relative who lives at another address is cross-household sharing. Under Netflix’s policy, that person generally needs an eligible extra-member arrangement or their own subscription. Netflix does not necessarily cancel an account immediately; enforcement commonly appears as household association, verification requests and prompts to move the outside user to a paid option.
Netflix began communicating its U.S. paid-sharing policy to members on May 23, 2023, according to Netflix’s announcement. Availability, plan features and prices remain country- and provider-specific.

What Netflix means by “Netflix Household”
Netflix describes a household as the collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account is watched. A television and its home internet connection are central to establishing or updating that household. It is not simply a list of everyone who knows the password, and being related to the account owner does not make someone in another home part of it.
Netflix may associate devices using the same home connection as the main TV. A device using a different internet-service-provider account or external IP address may be asked to verify that it belongs to the household. Netflix does not publish a complete technical formula, so claims that enforcement relies on one permanent IP-address test are too broad.
Which situations are allowed?

How Netflix verifies a household
According to Netflix’s household guidance, verification can involve the main TV, the preferred home internet connection, devices and the account owner’s email or phone. A different ISP account or external IP address can cause a request for a verification link. The public documentation does not establish how often every signal is checked or guarantee a fixed prompt schedule.

What the household error means
“Your device isn’t part of the Netflix Household” usually means Netflix cannot associate that device or connection with the account’s designated main household. Common causes include a genuine outside-home user, a recent move, a hotel or rental login, a different Wi-Fi network, a household update made from the wrong location, or an old device that remains signed in.
Fixing the household message as a legitimate member
Use the following process from a TV connected to the preferred home internet connection:
- Open Netflix and, from the home screen, press Back on the remote. On Apple TV, press Menu.
- Open the profile menu and select Get Help or Settings.
- Select Manage Netflix Household, then Update Netflix Household.
- Choose Send Email or, where offered, Send Text.
- Open the message sent to the account owner, select Yes, This Was Me, and then Confirm Update.
The verification link expires after 15 minutes. If the update fails, open the account’s device-management area, sign out of unfamiliar devices or use Sign out of All Devices, then repeat the update from the preferred home connection. Netflix specifically notes that a recent hotel stay or use at another person’s home can contribute to an association problem.

If the email or text does not arrive
- Check the account owner’s spam, junk and promotional folders.
- Confirm that the message is being sent to the current email address or phone number on the account.
- Request a fresh link and open it promptly; old links cannot be reused after expiry.
- Remove unknown devices, then start the process again from the main household TV.
Sharing with someone who lives elsewhere
Extra member
An extra member is Netflix’s paid-sharing option. The account owner buys an available slot and sends an invitation. The outside user receives separate sign-in credentials and a profile, while the owner remains responsible for the charge.

Netflix says extra members are generally available on eligible Standard or Premium plans in many countries. They are not available on ad-supported plans, and some partner-billed or package subscriptions have different rules. Activation generally must occur in the same country in which the owner created the membership. Netflix’s Help Center also describes a one-profile, one-device-at-a-time limit and the owner’s plan quality applying to the extra member; check the country-specific offer because eligibility and limits vary.
Separate account
A separate subscription is usually the clearest choice for a long-term user in another home, an international user, or anyone whose plan or billing provider does not support extra members. It gives that person control of payment, profiles and plan changes without relying on the primary household. Start at Netflix’s official signup page.

Extra member versus separate account

Profile transfer when a borrower leaves
Where supported, Netflix lets a borrower transfer a profile to a new account or extra-member arrangement. The transferred information may include recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games and settings. Temporary travel
Netflix explicitly discusses watching while traveling, including on personal devices and in hotels or holiday rentals. Phones, tablets and laptops are generally less disruptive than a television at another location. A hotel or rental TV may request verification because it is connected to a different environment.

Moving within the same country
If the main residence changes, update the Netflix Household from the new preferred connection. U.S. and Canadian customers moving domestically should also update billing information so the correct tax rate is applied, according to Netflix’s moving guidance.
Moving to another country
Netflix says an international move requires canceling the current membership and signing up again in the new country. The catalog, currency, payment methods, taxes and price may change.
Second residences
Netflix does not promise that one ordinary household setting permanently authorizes two homes. Repeatedly changing the household can create confusion and further verification requests; Netflix recommends updating it from the preferred or most-used internet connection.

If Netflix is included through Verizon, Dish, Xfinity or another package, extra-member eligibility and payment may differ from a direct Netflix subscription. Some packages do not support extra members; others require a secondary payment method, and the package may cover only the main plan. See the relevant provider terms, such as Dish package guidance and Verizon package guidance.
An extra member can be placed on hold because of insufficient funds, an expired or invalid card, a bank decline or incorrect billing details. Netflix also identifies a U.S. ZIP-code mismatch between the account and card issuer as a possible cause. Update the payment method, retry the charge or contact the bank; the documented recovery steps are in Netflix’s payment-help article.
Why a VPN is not a solution
A VPN can change the apparent network location, but it does not make a person living in another home an eligible household member. It can introduce country, payment, catalog and verification conflicts and may conflict with Netflix’s terms. Netflix also warns that accounts obtained from unauthorized sources may not work where the buyer tries to use them; avoid resale marketplaces and “cheap shared account” offers. Choosing the compliant option
- You all live together: keep using the existing account from the shared home and stay within its plan limits.
- The other user lives elsewhere and the account is eligible: compare the current extra-member offer shown in the owner’s account.
- The other user lives elsewhere but extra members are unavailable: transfer the profile if offered and open a separate account.
- You are traveling: use personal devices and complete verification when Netflix requests it.
- You moved countries: cancel and rejoin in the new country rather than trying to preserve the old country’s household setup.
