Netflix lost the 2011 Matthew McConaughey movie The Lincoln Lawyer in the United States on January 1, 2026—but it did not lose the franchise. The separate Netflix series starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo remained available with four seasons. The movie and show share Mickey Haller, yet they adapt different Michael Connelly novels.
Netflix did not lose The Lincoln Lawyer franchise. It lost the 2011 Matthew McConaughey film from its U.S. catalog on January 1, 2026, while the separate Netflix television series starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo remained available with four seasons. The distinction matters: the movie and show share Mickey Haller, but they adapt different Michael Connelly novels.
What left Netflix—and when
The feature film’s reported final day on Netflix in the United States was December 31, 2025. It left the catalog on January 1, 2026. That is a historical U.S. availability date, not a prediction about a future removal.
Viewers looking for the McConaughey movie should not assume that searching Netflix for “The Lincoln Lawyer” will produce it. Netflix’s title is now associated primarily with its television adaptation, which is a different production and a different story. Streaming rights also vary by country and can change without notice, so check a current availability guide before renting or buying.

The movie and series are not the same adaptation
McConaughey’s film adapts Michael Connelly’s 2005 novel The Lincoln Lawyer. The story introduces Mickey Haller, a Los Angeles criminal-defense attorney who conducts much of his business from the back seat of a Lincoln Town Car. The film, released in March 2011, also stars Marisa Tomei as Maggie McPherson and Ryan Phillippe as Louis Roulet.
Netflix’s series takes a different route through the source material. Its first season is based on The Brass Verdict, Connelly’s second Mickey Haller novel—not a remake of the 2011 movie. David E. Kelley’s television version casts Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Haller, with Neve Campbell and Becki Newton among the principal cast members. Netflix Tudum’s adaptation explanation makes the distinction especially useful for viewers who expect the show to retell the film.
Why Netflix’s remaining Haller series qualifies as a hit
The removal is particularly notable because Netflix has continued to build the character into a successful television property. Netflix reported that Season 4 debuted at No. 2 on its Global Top 10 English Series list with 9 million views. That platform-owned figure is a stronger basis for calling the show a streaming hit than general online enthusiasm alone.

All four released seasons were streaming on Netflix according to the company’s February 10, 2026 coverage. The series therefore remained on the service even after the McConaughey film departed. In practical terms, Netflix lost one screen version of Mickey Haller while retaining the newer, ongoing one.

On May 13, 2026, Netflix announced that Season 5 would be the fifth and final season. Production was underway, and the announcement described the season as a planned conclusion intended to give Haller a satisfying finale. Netflix had not confirmed a release date in the cited announcement, so viewers should not treat an unsourced date as official.

Where can you watch the McConaughey movie now?
Availability depends on both location and date. A June 25, 2026 U.S. snapshot from JustWatch listed the 2011 film outside Netflix, with YouTube TV shown as a streaming option and digital rental and purchase options also listed. The same listing showed Fawesome scheduled to carry the film from August 1, 2026.

Those listings are not permanent. Services can differ by territory, and a title can move between subscription streaming, rental, purchase, and ad-supported catalogs. Use the JustWatch listing or your preferred local guide immediately before publication or viewing rather than treating one snapshot as a guarantee. If you want a durable option, search for The Lincoln Lawyer on Blu-ray, but confirm the edition, region compatibility, stock, and included features before ordering.
What to read after watching either version
The most direct next step is Michael Connelly’s The Lincoln Lawyer, the novel behind the McConaughey film. It is also the best way to understand why the two screen productions should be treated as parallel adaptations rather than one movie followed by a remake. Editions may be available in print, ebook, or audiobook formats; check the current listing for format and availability.

- The Fifth Witness
- The Gods of Guilt
- The Law of Innocence
- Resurrection Walk
- The Proving Ground (2025)
The screen series has not followed that list in a simple one-book-per-season sequence. Netflix’s Season 4, for example, draws on The Law of Innocence, whose premise places Haller in the position of defending himself after a client’s body is found in his Lincoln. Connelly’s official series guide is the safest place to check the current reading order and publication information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The simplest way to understand Netflix’s “loss”
- Leaving: the 2011 feature film starring Matthew McConaughey.
- Still on Netflix in the cited 2026 updates: the Manuel Garcia-Rulfo television series, with four seasons.
- Source split: the film adapts The Lincoln Lawyer; Season 1 adapts The Brass Verdict.
- Series outlook: Season 4 opened with 9 million global views and a No. 2 English-series debut; Season 5 is planned as the final season.
- Best replacement for the movie: check current rental, purchase, subscription, or physical-media listings rather than assuming the Netflix show is the same title.
So the headline is a catalog change, not the disappearance of Mickey Haller from Netflix. The McConaughey movie that established the character’s major screen identity is gone from the U.S. service, but Netflix’s later adaptation remains—and its success has carried the franchise toward a planned final season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Netflix removing The Lincoln Lawyer series?
No. Netflix’s television series is a separate adaptation of Michael Connelly’s Mickey Haller novels. The 2011 movie adapts The Lincoln Lawyer, while Season 1 of the series is based on The Brass Verdict.
