Netflix went live in India on January 6, 2016, with launch plans reported at ₹500, ₹650 and ₹800 per month. The ₹500 starting price belongs to Netflix’s original India launch—not its current offer. Netflix’s India page advertised plans from ₹149 to ₹649 per month before tax as of August 2026, although today’s plans are not directly comparable with the 2016 tiers.
A global launch that included India
Netflix announced its expansion at CES 2016, making the service available simultaneously in more than 130 additional countries, including India. The move brought the U.S. streaming company into one of the world’s largest consumer markets as it pursued near-global availability. China was among the notable exceptions. Netflix’s launch announcement described the expansion and the countries included.

Netflix was an internet-delivered, on-demand service rather than a conventional television channel with a fixed broadcast schedule. Viewers could watch on supported smart TVs, game consoles, streaming players, smartphones and tablets. Access depended on an internet connection, so the subscription price was only part of the practical cost of watching.
What the original India plans reportedly cost

These figures were reported by multiple outlets, including The Indian Express and Hindustan Times. There is a small but material discrepancy at the top end: an Economic Times interview referred to the 4K tier as ₹850, while Reuters, The Indian Express and Hindustan Times listed it at ₹800. The available launch-day reports do not resolve the difference, so ₹800 is best understood as the more commonly reported figure, not an uncontested one.

Resolution and screen limits mattered only if a household had the right equipment and connection. A 4K plan offered little advantage without a 4K display and adequate bandwidth; paying for several simultaneous screens mattered mainly to households watching on different devices at once.
What viewers could watch—and what they could not assume
The subscription brought together Netflix original series and licensed films and television shows. Netflix’s global announcement highlighted titles such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Narcos, Sense8, Grace and Frankie and Marco Polo. Indian viewers could also find Indian films, but the India catalogue was not simply a copy of the U.S. catalogue. Netflix later explained that catalogues differ by country because licensing rights are territory-specific; availability of a title in one market does not guarantee it in another.

The distinction is important in any account of the launch: Netflix offered a global service, not a single identical worldwide library. The launch was also not the arrival of a large slate of Indian Netflix originals. The company’s Indian content partnerships and local-language programming developed later.
Why the launch was a difficult test
Price sensitivity: At ₹500 a month for the entry tier, Netflix was testing whether a relatively premium, globally consistent price would work in a market where viewers had many lower-cost entertainment choices. Contemporary coverage questioned how well that approach would fit local spending habits. The price also had to be considered alongside the cost of broadband or mobile data.

Bandwidth and data limits: Streaming quality depends on connection speed and stability. High-definition and especially 4K video can consume substantial data, making the upper tiers less useful to households with slower connections, restrictive data caps or costly mobile data. Contemporary interviews identified both connection quality and data limits as obstacles.
Piracy and existing habits: Unauthorized downloads and streams were another challenge. A legal service had to offer a compelling mix of convenience, price and content to compete with piracy, while also persuading viewers accustomed to television and other online-video options to pay for a subscription.

Language and local programming: Netflix’s initial international push relied heavily on a global catalogue, much of it English-language. The company said it intended to add more languages and content over time. That left an obvious long-term question for India: how to serve audiences seeking Indian films and programming in multiple languages, not just imported shows.

A service could be affordable on paper yet difficult to use without reliable internet; it could work technically but still feel poor value if the desired shows were unavailable in the local catalogue. The launch tested the whole viewing proposition.

How Netflix adapted its India offer
Netflix’s subsequent changes show how different the service became from its 2016 starting point:
- December 2016: Netflix announced a partnership with Red Chillies Entertainment, giving it subscription-video-on-demand access to numerous films and future titles associated with Shah Rukh Khan’s production company. Netflix’s announcement described the deal.
- July 2019: Netflix introduced a mobile-only plan for ₹199 per month, limited to one smartphone or tablet in standard definition. At the time, its listed Basic, Standard and Premium plans were ₹499, ₹649 and ₹799. Netflix said members in India watched more on mobile devices than members anywhere else; that was the company’s own claim. The announcement set out the plan and prices.
- December 2021: Netflix cut its listed India prices to ₹149 for Mobile, ₹199 for Basic, ₹499 for Standard and ₹649 for Premium. Netflix announced the reductions.
- August 2026: Netflix’s India landing page advertised plans from ₹149 to ₹649 per month before tax. Check Netflix’s India page for the current offer; prices and plan details can change.
The modern ₹149 entry price is not a like-for-like replacement for the original ₹500 Basic plan: Netflix’s 2019 mobile tier was designed for viewing on a phone or tablet, while the 2016 tiers were defined by resolution and simultaneous screens. Likewise, today’s plan names and features should not be read backward into the launch-era offer.
What the ₹500 headline means
The headline records an important moment in Netflix’s international expansion, not a current subscription recommendation. In 2016, Netflix entered India with a relatively high entry price, multiple screen-and-resolution tiers, a global catalogue and significant dependence on viewers having usable internet access. Over time it added mobile-focused pricing, expanded its Indian partnerships and programming, and lowered prices. Its India story is therefore one of adaptation as much as arrival.
