Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Netflix has not disabled Google Cast everywhere. It has ended Netflix-controlled casting from phones and tablets to most TVs and TV-streaming devices. Netflix still works through native TV apps, while mobile casting remains listed for Chromecast (3rd generation or older), Google Nest Hub displays, and selected Vizio and Compal TVs.
What changed
The affected feature is the Cast button in the Netflix mobile app: choose a receiver, then control playback from a phone or tablet. Netflix’s current support pages say mobile casting is no longer supported on most TVs and TV-streaming devices. On those products, open Netflix directly with the television or streamer’s remote instead (Netflix support; compatible devices).
This is different from Google Cast itself. YouTube and other compatible apps may still cast normally, and a Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer can still run Netflix as a native app. The change also does not mean every old Chromecast stopped working.
Which devices can still receive Netflix casts?
| Device | Netflix mobile-casting status |
|---|---|
| Chromecast 3rd generation or older (no remote) | Supported |
| Chromecast with Google TV | Generally not listed as a supported Netflix Cast target |
| Google TV Streamer | Generally not listed as a supported Netflix Cast target |
| Built-in Google TV televisions | Most are not listed as supported targets |
| Google Nest Hub smart displays | Supported |
| Select Vizio TVs | Supported |
| Select Compal TVs | Supported |
| Roku, Fire TV/Stick, Apple TV and other smart-TV platforms | Use the native Netflix app; Netflix does not list these as general Google Cast targets |
Netflix’s broader device list still includes Chromecast, Roku, Fire TV/Stick, Apple TV and many television brands as platforms where its app is available (supported devices).

Your subscription plan matters—but cannot override compatibility
Netflix says casting or mirroring is available on Standard and Premium plans, not the ad-supported plan (plan requirement). In the United States, Netflix displayed these prices when checked: Standard with ads, $8.99 per month; Standard, $19.99; Premium, $26.99 (Netflix pricing page; prices checked in 2026 and subject to change).
That requirement is necessary only for supported targets. Upgrading will not turn a Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer or an unlisted television into an officially compatible Netflix Cast receiver.

Why did the Cast button disappear?
A missing button can be an intentional compatibility change or a discovery problem. Netflix says the button may be absent when no compatible device is available; “No devices found” can also result from network or permission issues (Netflix troubleshooting).
Check compatibility first
If your receiver is not in Netflix’s short list, network troubleshooting will not restore official mobile casting. Use its Netflix app instead.

If the receiver is supported, check discovery
- Put the phone and TV or Chromecast on the same Wi-Fi network, including the same named 2.4GHz or 5GHz network.
- Make sure the receiver is powered on.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Netflix and enable Local Network.
- Update Netflix-related software. Android users should update Google Home and Google Play Services; iPhone and iPad users should update Google Home.
- Close and reopen Netflix, then fully power off the phone. Unplug the Chromecast or TV device for at least 15 seconds, reconnect it and try again.
- For Android casting, use Android 9 or later, as specified by Netflix.
Best workaround for each situation
At home with a supported television
Use the built-in Netflix app and remote. This costs nothing extra and avoids phone-to-TV discovery, though older smart TVs may be slow or lose Netflix support. Netflix warns that some TVs and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer be supported (device guidance).
Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer
Open Netflix directly and navigate with the remote. Google TV Streamer remains a current streaming box with 4K HDR, 32GB storage, 4GB memory, Ethernet and Google Home integration. Google lists a regular price of $99.99 and says an HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately (Google TV Streamer). Buying it is a native-app upgrade, not a dependable way to restore Netflix phone casting.

Hotel, rental or temporary setup
Modern hotel televisions may require signing into their Netflix app and signing out before leaving. A personal streamer connected by HDMI or a wired phone connection avoids entering credentials on an unfamiliar TV, provided the hotel permits the connection and network setup.
Older television or unreliable smart-TV software
A compatible personal streaming device or a wired adapter is usually more practical than replacing an otherwise usable display. Do not buy an old Chromecast solely for Netflix: third-generation-and-older models are legacy hardware, used condition varies, and future support could change.

- BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE: Works with earlier versions to allow for use with a wide range of HDMI-enabled devices
Can you mirror Netflix instead?
Netflix explicitly does not support AirPlay, and wireless screen mirroring can fail because of phone, television, operating-system or digital-rights restrictions (Netflix casting guidance).
A wired connection can work for travel or a display without a usable app:
- Android devices need a video-capable USB-C (or otherwise supported) adapter; not every USB-C port or cable outputs video.
- Lightning iPhones and iPads require a supported Lightning Digital AV Adapter. Netflix identifies model numbers A1438 and A1621.
- Some phones cannot output video at all, and unsupported adapters may be rejected.
- Downloaded video may show black bars, and Netflix says autoplaying the next episode is not supported when using a video cable or adapter.
Why Netflix may have made the change
Netflix has not published a detailed reason. A plausible explanation is that devices with their own remote and Netflix app can handle sign-in, profiles, subtitles, advertising and playback without a separate casting system. Maintaining many casting implementations across television platforms may also be less attractive than maintaining native apps. Claims that the policy is specifically intended to sell hardware, increase account sign-ins or push higher-priced plans remain unconfirmed analysis, not an announced Netflix motive.
Bottom line
If your TV or streamer has Netflix, use the remote and native app. If you own a Chromecast 3rd generation or older and have Standard or Premium, mobile casting may still work. If phone control is essential, a wired video adapter or an already-compatible legacy Chromecast is more relevant than buying a new Google TV device—and AirPlay is not a Netflix workaround.
