Yes, the test is real—but it is not a new public web search engine. Netflix is experimenting with a limited, opt-in conversational discovery feature inside its iPhone and iPad app. Members in the beta can describe the kind of film or series they want in ordinary language, such as “Something funny and upbeat,” and refine the results through follow-up requests.
Bloomberg reported in April 2025 that Netflix’s experiment used OpenAI technology. Netflix’s own announcement and Help Center confirm a generative-AI search test, but do not identify OpenAI, a specific model, or the way any third-party technology is involved.
What Netflix is actually testing
Netflix announced its generative-AI discovery experiment on May 7, 2025, describing a small, opt-in iOS beta for finding titles through natural-language requests. The feature is designed for viewers who know the mood, tone, or situation they want but do not know a title, actor, or exact genre label. Netflix says users can search conversationally and then make the request more specific as recommendations appear.
Netflix’s current Help Center still describes the experience as “A new way to search on Netflix” and says it is available only to a small group of members. That means this remains a beta experiment, not a guaranteed permanent feature or a general rollout.

It is not a standalone search engine
Some coverage calls the project an “AI search engine,” but that description is easy to misunderstand. The feature lives inside Netflix and is intended to interpret requests against Netflix’s viewing catalog. It does not search the open web, answer general questions like Google or Bing, or compete with ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, or another standalone information service.
“Conversational search” or “AI-powered recommendation search” is more precise. Netflix already has conventional search and personalization systems; this beta adds a natural-language interface for expressing viewing intent.
How to try the beta

- Tap Learn More, then select Try Now.
- Choose a suggested prompt or enter your own request in natural language.
- Review the recommendations and refine the request in the search box.
Netflix’s documented example is “Something funny and upbeat.” Requests about mood, tone, pace, or viewing context are the point of the experiment. Phrases such as “Something comforting,” “a dark suspenseful thriller,” or “something easy to watch after work” are illustrative examples of the kind of intent a conversational interface is meant to express—not demonstrations Netflix has separately guaranteed.

Who can use it?
The Help Center says the beta is available to only a small set of members and names iPhones and iPads as the supported devices. Netflix does not say in that documentation that the feature is available on Android, desktop browsers, televisions, or every smart-TV app. It also does not establish a country-wide rollout or a particular subscription-plan requirement.

If you do not see the invitation, that most likely means your account was not selected. Updating the app is sensible, but an update cannot guarantee access. Netflix’s current support guidance says the latest iPhone and iPad app requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later, although people on older systems may be able to redownload a previously installed version. That is an app-compatibility rule, not a separately stated requirement for the AI beta: Netflix’s device guidance.
What “OpenAI-powered” means
Bloomberg reported on April 11, 2025, that Netflix was testing search technology using OpenAI and described more specific, mood-based requests. That is the basis for the “OpenAI-powered” wording.
Netflix’s first-party material is narrower. Its May 2025 announcement confirms that it is exploring generative AI for discovery, while the Help Center explains the beta’s controls and availability. Neither page names OpenAI, a model, or a hosting arrangement.

Consequently, the following details remain unestablished by the cited public documentation:
- The exact OpenAI model, if one is used in the current version.
- Whether Netflix sends search text directly to OpenAI.
- Whether OpenAI hosts the complete search workflow.
- Whether there is an exclusive commercial agreement.
- Whether OpenAI remains the provider in every iteration of the beta.
Netflix also has its own foundation-model research for personalization applications involving the homepage and search. That work, described in its research archive, means “OpenAI-powered” should not be read as proof that OpenAI determines every ranking or recommendation.

How it differs from ordinary Netflix search
Standard Netflix search works well when you know a title, actor, franchise, genre, or keyword. The beta is intended for less structured requests: describe the feeling or viewing situation first, then let the system translate that language into recommendations.

A result is still a recommendation, not a promise that every condition in a prompt has been satisfied. A title may be unavailable in your country, restricted by profile settings, newly removed from the catalog, or simply ranked because it is the closest available interpretation of an ambiguous request.
Potential benefits—and practical limitations
Netflix’s stated rationale is easier, more responsive discovery. A conversational interface could help viewers who otherwise scroll through fixed categories, and follow-up refinements could be more expressive than selecting a genre. But Netflix has published no search-success rates, viewing-time changes, satisfaction scores, or A/B-test results in the cited material. There is no evidence yet that the beta performs better than standard search.
Expect familiar limitations:
- Ambiguity: “Feel-good,” “not too scary,” and “funny but smart” mean different things to different people.
- Catalog and region: Recommendations depend on what Netflix can offer in your country and profile.
- Personalization: Netflix says members can tailor and refine recommendations, but its public instructions do not spell out exactly how profile history enters the ranking process.
- Repetition: The system may favor popular or already familiar titles rather than broaden discovery.
- Volatility: A beta can change, narrow, or disappear without becoming a permanent product.
- Spoilers: Descriptions or follow-up answers may reveal more plot information than a conventional title search.
Privacy questions are still open
The product pages reviewed do not explain whether conversational prompts are retained, how long they remain associated with a profile, whether they are used to improve models, or whether they are shared with a third-party provider. They also do not state whether prompts are combined with viewing history.

Timeline and current status
- April 11, 2025: Bloomberg reports that Netflix is testing an OpenAI-powered search tool.

Bloomberg attributes the technology to OpenAI, but Netflix confirms only the generative-AI experiment itself.
