Netflix is ending support for selected television, Blu-ray, home-theater and other streaming products—not every old TV. Panasonic has announced a cutoff of August 27, 2026 for selected models, while Sony USA has announced the end of network services, including Netflix, on certain audio and video products from November 17, 2026. The exact model, country and device software determine whether you are affected.
In most cases, you can keep using a working television by connecting a supported streaming player over HDMI.
This is not a universal Netflix shutdown
Netflix retires support when a device’s operating system, app, security technology or manufacturer firmware can no longer meet its technical requirements. The policy is applied to particular models or product families, often at different times and in different regions. A television’s age alone is not an official eligibility test; there is no blanket rule that every TV made before a particular year will lose Netflix.
If Netflix says it is no longer available on your device, the message concerns that device rather than necessarily your account or membership. Netflix’s guidance is to use another supported device when the hardware cannot run the required software: Netflix’s unsupported-device guidance.

Panasonic models named in the global notice
Panasonic identifies selected 2014 series including AX800, AX802, AX850, AX900, AX902, AXC904, AXR800, AXR900, AXW804, AXW904, X940, X942, XR940, XW944 and XW945 in the regions listed above. Series names and hardware can differ by country, so do not assume that every product carrying one of these names is affected worldwide.
Panasonic’s regional information also lists examples outside those televisions, including a 2014 AX900 television, 2015 DMR-UBZ1 Blu-ray recorder, 2016 DMP-BDT180 Blu-ray player and 2015 DMP-BDT170 Blu-ray player in Japan. Earlier and separate Sony retirements
Sony previously announced that Netflix would stop working on certain 2015 Blu-ray Disc players from June 2, 2025. That example, and the 2026 Sony notice, show a recurring model-by-model policy rather than one global Netflix decision: Sony’s earlier Blu-ray notice.

How to check whether your device is affected
- Find the exact model number. Look for a label on the rear or side, the original paperwork, or the TV/player’s Settings, About or System Information screen. Retail names, chassis numbers and support IDs are not always identical.
- Check the manufacturer notice for your country. Match the complete model number, not just the brand or series name, and note the stated termination date.
- Check Netflix’s supported-device information and any warning inside the app.
- Install available firmware. A final manufacturer update can change compatibility, so check again near the announced date.
If the app has frozen or vanished without a formal retirement notice, Netflix recommends updating the device software, restarting it and contacting the manufacturer if necessary: Netflix troubleshooting guidance.
What different Netflix messages mean
“Netflix is no longer available on this device”
This generally indicates that the device cannot receive the required Netflix software. It is different from a household prompt, password problem or ordinary network outage. If the hardware cannot be updated, use another supported device.
Ad-supported plan compatibility
A device can still run Netflix while being unable to run the ad-supported experience. To check in the app, press Back to open the menu, go left to the profile icon if necessary, select Get Help, then Plan Compatibility. If that option is absent, Netflix says the device cannot be used with an ad-supported experience. This does not prove that all Netflix access will stop: Netflix’s plan-compatibility instructions.

Temporary app or network trouble
Power-cycle the TV or player, restart the home network, update firmware, and sign out and back in. Resetting the Netflix app can remove downloads, saved data or account credentials, so use it only when simpler steps fail.

An unsupported built-in app does not normally disable the panel, speakers or HDMI ports. Panasonic specifically recommends connecting a compatible external device: Panasonic’s workaround guidance.
- Roku streaming player
- Amazon Fire TV device
- Apple TV
- Google TV or another supported Android TV streamer
- Supported Xbox or PlayStation console
- A cable or pay-TV box that provides a current Netflix app
Connect the device to an available HDMI input, select that input on the television and use the streamer’s remote. Check the exact model rather than buying solely by brand; app support, region, Wi-Fi, resolution and audio capabilities vary.

Why casting from a phone is not a universal fix
Netflix currently supports casting to a limited set of targets, including Chromecast (third generation or older without a physical remote), Google Nest Hub Smart Display, and selected cast-enabled Vizio and Compal TVs. Many newer streamers require you to use their physical remote and built-in Netflix app instead: Netflix’s current casting list.
Casting or mirroring is also plan-dependent. Netflix says it is available on Standard or Premium plans, while devices using an ad-supported experience cannot be used as a TV display for Netflix playing on a mobile device: casting troubleshooting and plan guidance. A dedicated streamer is therefore usually more dependable than relying on phone mirroring.

Use an external streamer when
- The TV works normally and has an open HDMI port.
- You mainly need Netflix and other common streaming apps.
- 1080p output is sufficient.
- You want the least expensive, least disruptive solution.
Roku players suit a simple remote-controlled interface; Amazon Fire TV fits households using Alexa; Google TV devices suit Google Assistant and Cast ecosystems; Apple TV 4K is aimed at Apple households wanting a premium media box. Official product pages are Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV and Apple TV 4K. A console you already own may avoid another purchase; see Xbox and PlayStation.

Choose a more capable player for 4K, HDR or advanced audio
Verify the whole chain: the TV must accept the resolution, the HDMI port and cable must meet the required HDCP standard, and the TV, title, plan and audio equipment must support HDR, Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos. Netflix says Ultra HD requires a qualifying plan, compatible TV and device, streaming quality set to Auto or High, and a steady connection of at least 15 Mbps: Netflix Ultra HD requirements. A 4K streamer cannot turn an old 1080p panel into a 4K display.
Replace the television when
- The panel or speakers are already failing.
- There is no usable HDMI input.
- The screen’s resolution, brightness or refresh rate no longer meets your needs.
- You want one integrated interface and the cost of a streamer plus other equipment approaches that of a suitable new TV.
Used streamers deserve caution: they may have expired app support, weak Wi-Fi, missing remotes, region restrictions or no 4K/HDR capability. Confirm the exact model and reset it before connecting your account.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Exact model number and country confirmed.
- Manufacturer cutoff date recorded.
- Firmware checked and installed.
- Temporary app and network faults ruled out.
- HDMI input, cable and HDCP capability checked.
- Replacement device supports your Netflix plan, resolution and audio needs.
- Casting is not being assumed where direct app access is available.
