Netflix error HTP-998 usually means your device cannot reach Netflix because of a network connection problem. For a Smart TV, Netflix’s recommended first step is to power-cycle the TV, then restart your modem and router. The exact instructions differ for other devices: Netflix’s current HTP-998 page directs users of non-Smart-TV devices to contact support while it investigates the issue.
What does Netflix error HTP-998 mean?
Netflix associates HTP-998 with a connection problem that prevents a device from accessing the service. It may appear with a message such as, “We’re having trouble accessing these titles for you right now. Please try again later.” The code points to a connectivity symptom; it does not, by itself, prove that Netflix is down or identify whether the cause is the TV, Wi-Fi, router, internet provider, or a temporary Netflix-side problem. The code is HTP-998, not HTTP-998.
Netflix’s HTP-998 help page gives a specific restart procedure for Smart TVs. This guidance reflects the page’s current instructions as of September 2026; Netflix may update its troubleshooting steps.

Quick fix for a Smart TV: restart the TV and network
- Turn off the TV and unplug it from power.
- Press the TV’s physical power button once. Wait 1 minute, or leave the TV unplugged for 3 minutes.
- Plug the TV back in and turn it on.
- Unplug both the modem and router from power. Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug them back in and wait 1 minute for the network to reconnect.
- Turn on the TV, open Netflix, and try playing a title again.
Use the TV’s power button rather than relying only on the remote’s standby button; standby may not fully restart the device. Likewise, wait for the modem and router to reconnect before retrying Netflix. A router can appear powered on before its internet connection is ready.

If Netflix still shows HTP-998
First work out whether the issue is limited to Netflix on one device or affects the wider connection. These are practical checks drawn from Netflix’s broader network troubleshooting guidance, not extra commands specific to HTP-998:
- Try another internet-connected app on the same TV. If that also fails, check the TV’s network connection and the home network.
- Check another device on the same Wi-Fi. If phones, computers, or other streaming devices also cannot get online, the router, modem, or internet service is a more likely place to investigate.
- Run the TV’s built-in network test, if it has one. Confirm that it is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
- Test the connection with Fast.com if useful. This can help assess connectivity to Netflix’s network, especially when discussing the issue with your internet provider.
If other apps work but Netflix fails only on one TV, the problem may be specific to the Netflix app, its cached state, the TV, or a service issue affecting that device. If available, test Netflix on another network. A weak Wi-Fi signal can also be intermittent even when ordinary browsing seems to work. Try moving the router and TV closer together, placing the router in an open, elevated spot, and keeping it away from appliances or devices that may cause interference.

Choose the next step based on what fails
| What you find | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Netflix and other apps fail on the TV | Check the TV’s network connection and restart the modem and router. If the connection remains down, check for an internet-provider outage. |
| Only Netflix fails on one Smart TV | Complete Netflix’s TV and network restart steps. If other online services work and HTP-998 remains, contact Netflix. |
| Several devices fail on the same home network | Check the modem, router, and local service status. Contact your internet provider if the connection does not recover or keeps dropping. |
| Netflix works on another network, but not this one | Investigate the home connection, provider, network settings, or filtering. On public or managed Wi-Fi, ask whether streaming is restricted. |
| The error appears on a console, streaming box, or other non-Smart-TV device | Netflix’s current HTP-998 page directs users of other devices to contact Netflix while the issue is under investigation. A full device and network restart is a reasonable initial diagnostic, but the Smart TV procedure is not a guaranteed platform-specific fix. |
| The error continues across multiple devices and networks | Contact Netflix. A connection issue may be outside your home network. |
Public Wi-Fi, VPNs, and other network complications
Hotel, school, workplace, and other public networks may block video streaming. Ask the network administrator whether Netflix is allowed, or try a permitted private network. Mobile hotspots and satellite connections may also be too slow or inconsistent for reliable playback, even if some internet services load.

Avoid changing DNS or making several network changes at once; that can make troubleshooting harder. A factory reset is disproportionate as an initial response, and neither reinstalling Netflix nor resetting the TV is listed as the universal HTP-998 fix.

When to contact your internet provider
Contact your ISP if multiple devices cannot access online services, the modem or router does not reconnect normally, there is a local outage, or the connection repeatedly drops. It is also worth contacting the provider when Netflix works on another network but not your home connection. Netflix says an ISP may be able to check for an outage, troubleshoot modem or router problems, correct network settings, or reset the connection.
When you contact the ISP, explain whether one device or several are affected, whether the TV uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet, whether other apps work, and whether the problem began after a router, modem, or internet-plan change.

When to contact Netflix
Contact Netflix if the Smart TV restart sequence does not help and other internet services work, if HTP-998 remains limited to Netflix, or if the error persists across networks. If the affected device is not a Smart TV, Netflix’s current HTP-998 page specifically asks users to contact support while the issue is investigated. Include the device type, the exact error code and message, the steps you have tried, and whether Netflix works on another network.
Do not assume the error means Netflix is experiencing a service-wide outage, that your account is at fault, or that a particular DNS change will fix it. The quickest useful distinction is whether other apps and devices can get online.
