Netflix’s tvq-pb-101 (1.9.0) error is associated with data stored on the playback device that is preventing Netflix from playing. Fully restart the TV or player first; if that does not work, reset Netflix’s local session by signing out and back in, or use the device’s Reset, Deactivate, or Reload option. The exact controls vary by device. Netflix’s public support page covers the broader tvq-pb-101 error and does not explain what the 1.9.0 suffix means internally.
What does Netflix error tvq-pb-101 (1.9.0) mean?
Netflix describes the tvq-pb-101 error family as a problem with data stored on the device that is stopping playback. That can affect a smart TV, streaming player, set-top box, Blu-ray player, or another connected device. The code alone does not establish that Netflix is down, that your account has a billing problem, or that your internet is too slow. Netflix’s support instructions for tvq-pb-101 recommend searching with the complete code, including the numbers in parentheses, because different variants can have different instructions. Netflix does not publicly decode the specific 1.9.0 suffix.
Start with the device running Netflix, not the router. Other tvq-pb-101 variants are explicitly treated as network errors by Netflix, but that is not the guidance on the general error page relevant here. If the suffix on your screen differs, look up that complete code rather than assuming these steps apply.
Fix it in order, from least disruptive to most disruptive
- Record the full message. Note the entire code, the text shown with it, your device brand and model, and whether one title or all titles fail. Try a second title before making major changes.
- Fully restart the TV or player. A remote’s standby button may leave the device in a low-power state, so use a full power cycle. For a smart TV, unplug it, press its physical power button once and wait one minute, or leave it unplugged for three minutes; reconnect it, turn it on, and try Netflix again. For streaming players, fully power off and unplug where applicable, wait at least 15 seconds, then power it back on. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions if the device has a different safe shutdown procedure.
- Sign out of Netflix and sign back in. This refreshes the Netflix session stored on the device. If the error screen offers More Details or More Info, open it and choose Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate, then confirm and sign in again. These options can vary by device.
- Reset Netflix through its menu if you cannot reach the error-screen controls. From the Netflix home screen, press Back. If the menu is at the top, move left to the profile icon; if it is on the left, scroll to the bottom. Choose Get Help → Sign out → Yes. If the normal controls are missing, Netflix documents this remote sequence as a fallback:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. Then select Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate from the menu that appears. The sequence is a fallback, not a universal first step. - Reinstall Netflix or clear its local data if your device supports it. Use the platform-specific steps below. Reinstallation may require you to sign in again.
- Update the device software. Check the TV or player manufacturer’s settings or support site for a firmware/software update. There is no single menu path for every model.
- Consider a factory reset only after the steps above. A reset to original settings may remove apps, Wi-Fi details, saved settings, and other device data; it is not guaranteed to fix playback. Get the exact procedure from the device manufacturer and have your Wi-Fi password and Netflix credentials ready.
Device-specific steps
Roku
If Netflix displays the error, select More Info or More Details, then choose Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate. Confirm, then sign in again. If that fails, remove and reinstall the channel:

- Press Home on the Roku remote and highlight Netflix.
- Press the Star button and choose Remove app → Remove.
- Add Netflix again using the Netflix button or Roku channel store, then sign in and test playback.
Smart TV
Fully restart the TV, then sign out of or reset Netflix and sign in again. If the error persists, check for a TV software update and contact the manufacturer for model-specific instructions. Netflix specifically directs Vizio users who continue to have this issue after the initial steps to contact Vizio. Reserve restoring the TV to original settings for a last resort because it can erase apps, network details, and preferences.
Fire TV or Fire TV Stick
Netflix’s app-data instructions for a related tvq-pb-101 (5.6.1) variant—not specifically (1.9.0)—give this Fire TV path: Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Netflix → Clear data, then choose Clear cache if available and power-disconnect the device before retrying. Menu labels can differ by Fire TV version. Treat this as a platform-specific escalation, not proof that the 1.9.0 variant has the same cause. See Netflix’s related Fire TV instructions.

Apple TV, Blu-ray players, and other streaming boxes
Start with a full restart and the Netflix sign-out/reset controls if they are available. Apple TV menus and controls vary by model; use Netflix’s Apple TV-specific sign-out instructions if the general menu path does not appear. For a Blu-ray player or another connected device, check the manufacturer’s support information for firmware updates and model-specific reset steps rather than applying another platform’s menu sequence.

Xfinity X1 and Contour
Netflix lists these reset paths:
- Xfinity X1: Press Xfinity, then A, and choose Reset Netflix → Reset Netflix → Restart Netflix.
- Contour: Press Contour, then A, and choose Reset Netflix → Reset Netflix → Restart Netflix.
Xbox 360
Netflix says Xbox 360 needs more than 8 MB of available storage. Check available storage; if space is sufficient and the error remains, uninstall and reinstall Netflix, then sign in again.

When should you troubleshoot the network?
Network troubleshooting is more relevant if Netflix fails on multiple devices in the home, other streaming services cannot connect, or you discover the code has a different suffix. As a practical diagnostic, if Netflix works on a phone or computer using the same account and home network but fails only on one TV, focus first on that TV’s app state, software, or compatibility. These are troubleshooting clues, not official interpretations of the 1.9.0 suffix.

Netflix identifies some other variants, including tvq-pb-101 (5.2.undefined) and tvq-pb-101 (5.2.4), as network-related. For those variants, follow the instructions for the exact code. Netflix’s network guidance includes turning off the playback device, unplugging the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnecting them, waiting for the connection to return, and retrying. Instructions for 5.2.undefined and instructions for 5.2.4 are separate from the general stored-device-data guidance. Do not change DNS, disable a VPN, or reset the router as the first response to (1.9.0) unless there is a separate network symptom.

When might the device be unsupported?
A persistent playback error can sometimes point to compatibility rather than a fixable Netflix session problem, but (1.9.0) alone does not prove that your device is unsupported. Check whether the manufacturer still provides software updates and ask the manufacturer or Netflix support whether your model remains compatible. Netflix notes that persistent related errors on some Android TV or streaming-box devices can mean the device is not supported; in that case, use another supported device. Netflix’s related error guidance discusses this compatibility possibility.

If the TV’s built-in app is obsolete but the TV itself works, an external streaming player connected to HDMI may be a less costly alternative to replacing the television. It will not fix a poor internet connection, a faulty HDMI input, or an account issue, and it is not a guaranteed cure for every playback error. Consider replacement only after restarting, resetting or reinstalling Netflix, checking device updates, and confirming compatibility with the manufacturer.
