The Netflix app is no longer available on those two pre-tvOS models, although the Apple TV hardware itself may still work for other supported apps and functions.
This was the meaning of the original “Netflix dropping support for older Apple TV models this summer” headline: “this summer” referred to summer 2024, not a newly announced 2026 cutoff.
Which Apple TV models lost Netflix?
Netflix’s 2024 change affected:
- Apple TV (2nd generation), released in 2010
- Apple TV (3rd generation), released in 2012
Netflix notified affected subscribers by email and said the change was intended to preserve the viewing experience on devices capable of supporting the service’s current requirements. Netflix’s help information now states that its app is no longer available on Apple TV (2nd generation) and Apple TV (3rd generation).
This does not mean those Apple TVs suddenly stopped turning on or became unusable. It means Netflix withdrew app support. Reinstalling the app, restarting the box, or changing the Netflix account cannot restore Netflix on an unsupported model.

Do not confuse the 2024 Netflix cutoff with the 2026 tvOS change
There are two separate support issues:
- Netflix app support ended in 2024 for Apple TV 2nd and 3rd generation.
- Apple software support is changing in 2026. Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K (1st generation) are excluded from tvOS 27, which is expected in fall 2026. Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) remain in the reported tvOS 27 compatibility group.
The second change does not prove that Netflix has announced an immediate cutoff for Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K (1st generation). Netflix currently lists both models as compatible, including 4K support for the first-generation Apple TV 4K. However, losing access to the newest tvOS release can eventually make an older device less attractive as apps evolve.
In other words, an Apple TV can still run Netflix while no longer receiving the newest Apple operating system. Netflix support and tvOS support are related, but they are not the same thing.
How to check which Apple TV you own
On the Apple TV, open Settings > General > About. Check the model information and compare it with the generation names above. The physical appearance alone is not always enough to distinguish Apple TV generations, particularly among the small black models.
If the model is identified as Apple TV (2nd generation) or Apple TV (3rd generation), the Netflix app cannot be restored through troubleshooting. If it is an Apple TV HD or an Apple TV 4K model, it belongs to the group Netflix currently lists as supported.

What to do if Netflix is missing
On an Apple TV 2nd or 3rd generation
There is no software fix for the 2024 compatibility cutoff. Reinstalling Netflix will not bring the app back, and a compatible HDMI cable or new remote will not change the device’s Netflix status. The practical solutions are:
- Replace the Apple TV with a newer Netflix-compatible streaming device.
- Use Netflix through a smart TV, game console, Blu-ray player, computer, phone, or tablet that supports the current Netflix app.
- Connect a newer streaming box to the television while continuing to use the old Apple TV for any apps that still work on it.
On an Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K
If Netflix is missing from a model that Netflix currently lists as supported, Netflix’s recommended first steps are to check the App Store and reinstall the app if necessary. Also check that the Apple TV is connected to the internet, signed into the intended Apple account, and running the latest tvOS version available for that model.
These steps may resolve a missing or malfunctioning app on supported hardware. They cannot overcome a confirmed model-level end of support.
Should you replace an Apple TV 2 or Apple TV 3?
Yes, if Netflix is an important part of the setup. A newer box is the appropriate solution because the limitation is the old Apple TV’s app compatibility, not the television or the Netflix account.

- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
The Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) is the most straightforward Apple TV replacement in the current information. Netflix lists it as supporting 4K playback, and current reporting places it among the Apple TV models continuing into the tvOS 27 compatibility group. It is a replacement recommendation—not evidence that every older Apple TV has already lost Netflix.
Owners who only need 1080p playback do not necessarily need a 4K television to solve the immediate problem; a compatible newer streaming device is the key requirement. Buyers choosing an Apple TV 4K should also consider the television, receiver, network connection, storage needs, remote, and whether they want Ethernet connectivity.
Netflix 4K requirements on Apple TV
For Apple TV 4K models, Netflix lists 4K playback when the rest of the setup meets its requirements:
- A compatible 4K television or display
- An HDMI connection supporting HDCP 2.2 or later
- A Netflix plan that includes 4K playback
- An internet connection of at least 15 Mbps
- Netflix streaming quality set to High
Netflix also lists Dolby Vision and HDR10 support for Apple TV 4K (1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation). The television, receiver, HDMI path, title, account plan, and network must all support the relevant format before it will appear during playback.

If you are installing a replacement Apple TV 4K, a high-speed HDMI cable that supports the required HDCP path may be a sensible setup accessory. It is not a cure for Apple TV 2nd- or 3rd-generation incompatibility; no cable can add Netflix support to those models.
Accessories that may help—but do not upgrade compatibility
A replacement Siri Remote can be useful when the Apple TV itself remains supported but the original remote is lost or damaged. Likewise, an Ethernet cable can be useful with an Apple TV 4K model that has Ethernet hardware and a home network positioned near the television.
Neither accessory changes the Netflix compatibility of an Apple TV (2nd generation) or Apple TV (3rd generation). Treat them as setup or maintenance purchases, not as alternatives to replacing obsolete streaming hardware.

- Apple TV 2nd or 3rd generation: Netflix support ended on July 31, 2024. Replace the streaming device if you want Netflix on that television.
- Apple TV HD: Netflix currently lists it as supported at 1080p, but it is excluded from tvOS 27, expected in fall 2026.
- Apple TV 4K 1st generation: Netflix currently lists it as supported for 4K, but it is also excluded from tvOS 27.
- Apple TV 4K 2nd or 3rd generation: Netflix currently lists both as supporting 4K, and both remain in the reported tvOS 27 compatibility group.
The immediate Netflix cutoff was narrow: it applied to the second- and third-generation Apple TV models. The later Apple software change is broader in its implications for product longevity, but it should not be misreported as a confirmed Netflix cutoff for the Apple TV HD or first-generation Apple TV 4K.
Frequently Asked Questions

Will resetting my old Apple TV restore Netflix?
No. A reset, restart, account change, or app reinstall cannot restore Netflix on Apple TV (2nd generation) or Apple TV (3rd generation). The models are no longer supported by Netflix.
Is Netflix ending support for Apple TV HD in 2026?
Netflix currently lists Apple TV HD as supported. Apple TV HD is excluded from tvOS 27, expected in fall 2026, but that does not by itself establish a Netflix cutoff date.
Which Apple TV is best as a replacement for Netflix?
The Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) is the clearest current Apple TV replacement in the researched information: Netflix lists it as supporting 4K, and it remains in the reported tvOS 27 compatibility group.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Netflix’s “summer” cutoff happened on July 31, 2024, and affected only Apple TV (2nd generation) and Apple TV (3rd generation). Those devices can still function for other purposes, but Netflix cannot be restored on them. Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K (1st generation) remain listed by Netflix for now, although both are excluded from tvOS 27; Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and (3rd generation) offer the stronger current software runway.
