It began a gradual move away from Microsoft Silverlight—not an immediate shutdown. Netflix says it ended Silverlight support on September 13, 2023.
What Netflix announced in June 2014
Netflix was beginning to offer plugin-free HTML5 playback in Safari on OS X Yosemite. At the time, Yosemite was available as a developer preview to members of Apple’s Mac Developer Program, so the announcement did not apply to every Mac or Safari user. The original VentureBeat report described the rollout as incremental and noted that Netflix had already introduced HTML5 support for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.1 in 2013.
Apple’s June 2, 2014 Yosemite announcement highlighted Safari support for HTML5 Premium Video Extensions. That mattered because Netflix needed more than ordinary video playback: it needed a way to stream and protect licensed films and television without relying on a separate Silverlight plugin.
Why Silverlight had been useful—and why Netflix moved on
Silverlight gave Netflix a browser plugin that could handle video playback, adaptive streaming and content protection across desktop environments of its era. But plugins also meant installation and compatibility dependencies, and browser vendors were moving toward built-in media capabilities. A browser-and-operating-system media stack could also integrate more closely with video decoding and power management.

The shift was not simply a matter of replacing a Silverlight player with an HTML5 video tag. HTML5 provides the browser-facing media element, but premium streaming also needs mechanisms to deliver segmented media at changing bitrates, handle encrypted content and work with platform-provided content protection. Netflix’s 2014 report discussed Media Source Extensions, Encrypted Media Extensions and Web Cryptography APIs as part of the technical picture.
What “HTML5 video” meant for protected streaming
- HTML5 video provides the browser’s media playback interface.
- Media Source Extensions allow a web player to feed media segments to the browser, supporting adaptive streaming behavior.
- Encrypted Media Extensions provide an interface between a web application and a browser or platform’s content-decryption system.
- Platform DRM supplies the underlying protected-playback implementation. Plugin-free playback does not mean unprotected or unrestricted video.
Yosemite and Safari’s significance was that Apple was adding protected-video capabilities Netflix could use in its own playback system. The migration was therefore about browser APIs, operating-system media frameworks, codecs and DRM working together—not HTML5 alone doing every job Silverlight had handled.

Apple’s battery-life claim, in context
Apple said a MacBook Air could play Netflix HD video for up to two hours longer with the new Safari pipeline. This was Apple’s controlled test result, not a universal Netflix guarantee. Apple used a 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 MacBook Air with 4 GB of RAM, prerelease OS X 10.10, prerelease Safari 8.0, Wi-Fi and battery power. The Safari setup played Netflix HD at 1080p; the comparison used prerelease Safari 7.0.4, Silverlight 5.1.30317.0 and Netflix HD at 720p.
Because the compared video resolutions and software differed, the figure should be read as Apple’s reported result under those test conditions, not a like-for-like promise for every Mac. Actual battery life depends on hardware, software, screen brightness, video resolution, network conditions and other activity.

Who could use the Safari change in 2014?
The first audience was narrow: Mac users on Safari with the Yosemite developer preview or compatible later software, and only where Netflix included the account and device in its rollout. A Mac having Safari installed was not enough by itself; the operating system and protected-media support mattered too.
- Supported users could watch through the browser without installing Silverlight for that playback path.
- They could use Apple’s integrated browser and operating-system media infrastructure.
- Older operating systems and browsers could continue to depend on Silverlight while Netflix expanded support.
- The initial feature was tied to prerelease software, not a general public launch for every Safari user.
How long did Netflix’s Silverlight transition take?
The 2014 announcement marked an early step, not the end of Silverlight at Netflix. Netflix moved across browser and operating-system combinations over time, as support for browser-native protected media developed. The original headline’s “slowly” is the important qualifier: Silverlight’s role was reduced platform by platform rather than switched off globally that day.

Netflix’s browser-support documentation gives the endpoint: the company ended Silverlight support on September 13, 2023. It lists Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox and Opera among the browsers supporting HTML5 playback. The 2014 announcement is best understood as the beginning of a multi-year migration, while the 2023 date marks Netflix’s documented cutoff.

The announcement captured a broader change in how premium video reached desktop browsers. Viewers could increasingly avoid a separately installed plugin, while browser and operating-system vendors took on more of the media pipeline. That could reduce plugin-specific installation and compatibility problems and let platforms handle playback more directly. The transition still depended on precise browser, operating-system and DRM support, so it did not instantly solve compatibility for older devices.

For a present-day viewer, the practical point is straightforward: a Silverlight-dependent browser is no longer a supported Netflix route. Netflix’s current guidance points users to a supported HTML5-capable browser; the 2014 Safari rollout is historical context, not a current compatibility instruction.
