Ne Zha II (also styled Ne Zha 2) is worth watching for its inventive fantasy imagery and huge, fluidly animated action. Its weakness is a story packed with mythological figures, backstories and quick exposition that can be difficult to follow, especially if you have not seen the first film. If maximalist animated spectacle appeals to you, the visual rewards are substantial; a fast, crowded plot comes with the ticket.

Is Ne Zha 2 worth watching?

Yes, if you want animated fantasy that thinks big. The film fills its world with divine figures, strange creatures and elaborate realms, then sends them into energetic action that feels constantly in motion. The spectacle is not just scale: the imagery and world-building give the fantasy a distinctive sense of place.

That visual confidence is the clearest reason to watch. The tradeoff is narrative density. The sequel moves quickly among characters and conflicts, and its broad, sometimes bodily humor can clash with intense fantasy action. It is a stronger recommendation for viewers happy to take in the experience even when every story beat does not immediately land.

What is the story about?

The film picks up after Ne Zha and Ao Bing survive as spirits. Their mentor, Taiyi, attempts to rebuild their mortal bodies with the Seven-colored Precious Lotus, but the effort faces obstacles. The stakes extend beyond restoring two bodies: the story follows Ne Zha, a rebellious boy feared by the gods, as he confronts an ancient force threatening humanity, as A24’s synopsis puts it.

The sequel draws on the mythological world associated with the 16th-century Chinese novel translated as Investiture of the Gods. That background is part of the film’s identity, not a generic fantasy dressing. At the same time, the movie introduces a crowded cast and layers of relationships and history at speed. If you are trying to track every name and allegiance, the plot can feel like a lot to absorb at once.

Is Ne Zha 2 hard to follow?

It can be. The issue is not simply that the film uses unfamiliar Chinese mythological figures; it is also the pace at which it introduces people, backstories and competing stakes. The Washington Post’s Chris Klimek wrote, “I was confounded from the opening moments, and only sporadically did I find my footing.” A Rotten Tomatoes review excerpt also objects to the many brief character monologues, describing them as exhausting.

Other reactions are more welcoming to newcomers. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls the movie visually spectacular and says it remains accessible to the uninitiated. Those views point to a real difference in experience: some viewers will follow the emotional and visual momentum without needing to decode every reference, while others may find the opening and its rapid exposition disorienting. The confusion is a legitimate limitation, but it does not make the cultural material a flaw.

Do you need to watch the first Ne Zha?

You do not need to know the source novel to enjoy the animation, but watching the 2019 Ne Zha first is the easiest way to understand the sequel’s central relationship and why the effort to restore Ne Zha and Ao Bing matters. If you would rather start here, a short primer on the film’s mythological figures can help orient you without turning the story into homework.

For a deeper optional background, the English translation of Investiture of the Gods identified by the Washington Post review offers a route into the source tradition. No particular translation or edition is established here, so check the translator and edition before choosing one. The film’s spectacle does not require you to read the novel.

How are the animation, action and tone?

Animation is the film’s strongest asset. Its large-scale set pieces, layered fantasy environments and divine and creature imagery make the world feel expansive, while the action’s fluid movement gives it punch. The film’s ambition is visible in the sheer variety of what it puts on screen; spectacle is the connective tissue that keeps the story moving even when the mythology becomes dense.

The tone is less uniform. Broad jokes sit alongside danger, fighting and emotional moments, and some of the humor is deliberately crude. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) notes references to farts, vomit and urine. If that kind of bodily comedy is not for you, it is worth knowing that the film does not stay solemn just because its fantasy conflicts are large in scale.

Is Ne Zha 2 suitable for kids?

Ratings depend on territory. The U.S. listing is PG-13 for violence. In the UK, the BBFC describes moderate stylized violence, threat and horror, mild language, injury detail, rude humor and flashing images; its advice also mentions a sad farewell to a dying loved one. The BBFC warns that the flashing images may affect viewers susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy. These are UK classification notes, not a universal age recommendation, so check the rating where you live and consider the specific content that concerns your household.

Is Ne Zha 2 available in English, and where can you watch it?

Yes. A24 promotes an English-language version featuring Michelle Yeoh, Crystal Lee, Vincent Rodriguez III and Aleks Le. The original language is Chinese, according to Rotten Tomatoes, and the BBFC lists Mandarin. The English dub is an option, not a reason to assume every listing has the same audio. Check your local service for the available version and confirm whether it is Mandarin with subtitles or the English dub.

Availability varies by country and changes over time. A24’s film page links to A24, Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, YouTube and Fandango at Home. Rotten Tomatoes lists HBO Max subscription streaming and Fandango rental or purchase, and records September 16, 2025 as the streaming release date. The Associated Press reported the HBO Max arrival in its December 19, 2025 streaming guide. Check your local service listing for current access and language options.

How has the film been received?

As accessed in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes lists a 91% Tomatometer from 89 reviews and a 98% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 verified ratings. Those live aggregator scores can change and summarize different groups’ reactions; they do not settle whether the story will work for you.

The film’s scale is also reflected in its commercial reach. Box Office Mojo listed a China market gross of $2,209,602,296 and a U.S. domestic gross of $23,308,176 when accessed in 2026; those database figures may be revised. The Associated Press described global ticket sales as more than $2.2 billion in December 2025. Box-office reach is context, not a measure of how clear or satisfying the storytelling will feel to an individual viewer.
