In “Her,” which aired March 3, 2026, the show reveals that Bishop’s apparent disgrace concealed years of covert work and gives her and Nick Torres a more direct, less abrupt parting. Calling that a “fix” is an interpretation: the episode adds context and emotional closure, but it does not show Bishop rejoining the team or resolve every thread of her investigation.
What happened to Ellie Bishop on NCIS?
Ellie Bishop, played by Emily Wickersham, was Ziva David’s replacement on the team. TV Guide places Bishop’s departure in Season 18 and describes the apparent disgrace surrounding it as a cover for undercover work tied to her history with a leaked NSA document. TV Guide’s cast-exit overview summarizes that earlier exit.

At the time, viewers saw Bishop leave under a cloud rather than receive a straightforward goodbye. Season 23’s “Her” returns to that story and fills in what she had been doing away from the team.
What does Season 23 add to Bishop’s exit?
CBS lists “Her” as Season 23, Episode 10, aired March 3, 2026. Its official synopsis sets up a pursuit: Knight is ordered to track Bishop after she is designated a wanted cyber-terrorist, and Bishop turns to Torres. CBS’s Season 23 episode listing and CBS’s episode publicity identify the episode and its reunion premise.

Episode details reported by CinemaBlend go beyond CBS’s short synopsis: Bishop had spent five years in deep cover leading a covert U.S. cyber team, and she deliberately disgraced herself to protect that mission. After her team is attacked in Ukraine, she goes on the run and steals Defense Department data while investigating the ambush and a suspected traitor. These revelations turn the earlier-looking career-ending scandal into part of an operation, rather than a simple betrayal of the team. CinemaBlend’s March 4, 2026 episode report describes the expanded backstory.
Why did Bishop leave, and what happened between her and Torres?
The “Her” account makes clear that Bishop’s departure was tied to the covert assignment, but the emotional cost was personal too. CinemaBlend reports that Bishop and Torres had secretly dated before she left; she feared that telling him the truth would lead him to persuade her to stay. Their reunion gives them the chance to address the goodbye they did not have at the time.

They part on good terms, but Torres does not join Bishop in continuing the investigation. The episode therefore resolves some of the relationship’s hurt without turning the reunion into a return to the NCIS team or a renewed partnership in the field.
Does “Her” fix the controversial exit?
It is reasonable to say the episode improves the explanation of Bishop’s exit: it restores the covert context and lets Bishop and Torres speak more plainly about what her sudden departure cost them. But “controversial” should be understood as a characterization of the exit, not a measured consensus. The available coverage does not establish that all viewers objected to it or quantify fan reaction.

The episode also leaves the larger covert investigation active. Bishop is still pursuing the suspected traitor and the circumstances of the Ukraine ambush, so “Her” is a substantial revisit, not a complete wrap-up of everything she is doing.

The “Ziva replacement” label refers to Bishop’s place on the team, but the two characters’ exits are separate stories. Cote de Pablo said in a CBS News interview published September 25, 2013, that leaving was a personal decision: “As far as my decision to leave, that’s a personal thing, and I’d rather leave it at that.” CBS News reported that de Pablo had played Ziva for eight seasons and that Ziva did not die in her exit episode. CBS News’ interview covers her departure.

Executive producer Gary Glasberg told TV Guide in October 2013 that the show had to restructure its planned opening after de Pablo’s departure. On the question of killing Ziva off, he said, “I thought that Ziva deserved better than that,” and wanted her to remain out in the world. That comment concerns Ziva’s exit, not Bishop’s. TV Guide’s interview with Glasberg provides that context.
