Spoilers for “Nexus,” the Season 22 finale of NCIS, which aired May 5, 2025. The true Nexus insider is Gabriel LaRoche, NCIS’s deputy director. The supposed cartel mastermind, “The Butcher,” is not a person at all: the identity was created by AI. The episode’s final scenes leave Parker facing a family tragedy and unanswered questions about his mother’s death.
Who is the real leader of Nexus on NCIS?
Gabriel LaRoche, played by Seamus Dever, is revealed as a mole inside NCIS who has been working for Nexus. TVLine reports that LaRoche deliberately burned Nick Torres’s cover. The episode also overturns the team’s hunt for a single criminal boss: “The Butcher” is an AI-created identity, not a real person. LaRoche is the exposed insider; the fabricated Butcher persona is a separate reveal. TVLine’s finale coverage
What happens at the end of the Season 22 finale?
Parker and Carla go to meet The Butcher
With LaRoche exposed, the team moves against Nexus. Parker reluctantly joins forces with Carla Marino, the mob boss who has long been his nemesis. Carla has been summoned to meet The Butcher, so she and Parker travel to the meeting while the team discovers that the supposed boss is an AI fabrication.
Carla leaves Parker alive
An impostor posing as one of the FBI agents escorting them kills their driver, leaving Parker and Carla alone. Carla tells Parker that her son died after running away from home when Parker told him his mother was a criminal. She points a gun at Parker and orders him to his knees, but does not kill him. She leaves him alive and abandons him.

Roman is found dead
That night, Parker returns home and finds his father, Roman, shot dead in front of the television. Two wine glasses are nearby; one bears Carla’s lipstick. The image raises suspicion around Carla, but the finale does not establish exactly what happened or why. A lipstick-marked glass is a clue, not proof of who killed Roman.
What does the finale reveal about Parker’s mother?
In the closing stretch, Jimmy tells the team that something is wrong with the original death certificate for Parker’s mother. The episode places that discovery alongside Roman’s murder, inviting viewers to wonder whether the family mysteries are connected, but it does not explain the certificate or confirm a link.

In a May 5, 2025 TVLine interview, showrunner Steven D. Binder said the writers noticed a possible connection early and wanted to try to make it work. He stressed the uncertainty: “I can tell you definitively that we love the idea of connecting those two, and we’re going to work to do it. But maybe we won’t.” That was a statement about the writers’ intentions at the time, not an answer supplied by the finale.
