What happens in “Close to Home”?
Victoria Palmer finds $35,000 in a bag behind a Navy library dumpster. Instead of calling her father, chief medical examiner Jimmy Palmer, she texts Nick Torres. The cash’s serial numbers connect it to $5 million stolen from an upstate New York bank 15 years earlier by the unidentified Saratoga Specter.

A partial fingerprint leads investigators to Carson Marcone, a local HVAC technician—but they find him murdered. The team learns that Marcone had serviced air-conditioning systems in Jimmy and Victoria’s Briarwood neighborhood, linking the old robbery to the current case.
How does Jimmy’s neighborhood investigation uncover the hidden money?
Security footage reveals Victoria was not at the Navy library when she claimed to have found the cash. She says she had been in the woods with friends. Meanwhile, Jimmy turns a neighborhood party into an informal evidence-gathering opportunity: he collects discarded drink cups from residents whose HVAC units Marcone serviced. Investigators compare the samples with a hair recovered from the original bank vault.

Wendy Hill draws suspicion because she bought her townhouse with $200,000 in cash 15 years earlier, even though she moved in only months ago. But Wendy is not the robber. Her father committed the bank heist, confessed shortly before his death and bought the townhouse with stolen money. Marcone had been taking some of the hidden cash while posing as a repair technician.
The investigation also reveals that security guard Rhonda erased records of Marcone’s visits and monitored the neighborhood through its app. Jimmy and Victoria stage a phone call to draw Rhonda to the place where Victoria actually found the money. Rhonda is arrested, and the team recovers the remaining $2.6 million from Wendy’s air-conditioning vents.

What does the case mean for Jimmy and Victoria?
The mystery is also a story about the distance between Jimmy and his daughter. Victoria’s decision to contact Torres rather than her father—and her lie about where she found the money—make their strained relationship part of the investigation. Jimmy’s undercover effort in Briarwood puts him close to her world, but the episode does not resolve their differences with a grand gesture. Victoria acknowledges her role in the sting and chooses to get ice cream alone with him.

“Close to Home” is NCIS season 22, episode 14. CBS lists a 43-minute runtime and a TV-PG rating for violence and language. CBS’s episode page states that streaming in the United States requires a Paramount+ subscription; availability outside the U.S. may differ.
