The anniversary story builds a chain of references to “Yankee White,” the first NCIS episode, rather than relying on a single name-check. In that pilot, the case unfolded aboard Air Force One. In “A Thousand Yards,” McGee gets excited about specifications for a new Air Force One, calling back to that original setting.

The plot also targets the Morrow family crypt, invoking former NCIS director Tom Morrow, and brings in Rachel Cranston, sister of former agent Caitlin Todd. Tobias Fornell, who appeared in “Yankee White,” returns too. Together, the aircraft, the Morrow connection and familiar characters make the pilot part of the episode’s narrative framework.
Which familiar characters appear?
In an MTAC call, Kensi Blye-Deeks from NCIS: Los Angeles and Jane Tennant from NCIS: Hawai‘i appear alongside the flagship team. Joe Spano also returns as Fornell. These are crossover appearances within the NCIS episode, not a joint case spanning the spin-offs.
