That combination gives the episode a clear emotional center beyond its case of the week.
What happens in “Touchstones”?
In the episode, the team investigates after someone breaks into the evidence room and significant cash goes missing. The inquiry leads them to a connection with a recent case. Alongside that investigation, Lala opens up to Gibbs, and Kowalski faces difficulty moving forward. Those are the details established by CBS’s official synopsis; it does not specify the personal history behind Kowalski’s struggle or describe the scenes in which it unfolds.

Does the episode earn its emotional focus?
The premise puts the procedural and personal material side by side rather than making the case the episode’s only concern. The evidence-room break-in supplies a concrete team problem; Lala’s conversation with Gibbs and Kowalski’s difficulty moving on point toward the people carrying the story. Whether those strands reinforce one another depends on the episode’s execution, and the official synopsis alone cannot establish how effectively they do.
One contemporary critical response offers a positive reading of that balance: Lissete Lanuza Sáenz of Fangirlish described the episode as “surprisingly touching” and argued that its attention to someone other than Gibbs did not feel like filler. That is one reviewer’s judgment, not a consensus or a substitute for a scene-by-scene account. The available episode description supports the emotional framing, but not more specific claims about Kowalski’s past, dialogue, or performance.
