In a Scroll.in interview with Nandini Ramnath, published May 30, 2021, Khalid argued that visuals alone do not carry a film. His view is his own, given in that interview, and it is a practitioner’s account rather than a settled verdict on Malayalam cinema as a whole.
What Khalid said about visuals and feeling
The central line of the interview is one Khalid states plainly: “If the film is a good film, it will work. It’s not only about the visuals. The internet is full of visuals. It’s about the feel of the story, the characters that people remember.”
The argument has two parts. The first is a warning against treating cinematography as decoration. Khalid’s point is that audiences now see striking images constantly, on phones and across platforms, so a frame that looks good is not enough on its own. The second part is what he thinks does the lasting work: the overall feel of the story and characters who stay with viewers after the screen goes dark. In his framing, the aesthetic and the emotional connection are not competing choices. Both have to be present for a film to land.
It is worth being precise about what this does and does not claim. Khalid is describing how he judges a good film and what he wants his own images to serve. He is not offering audience research, and the interview does not measure how viewers respond to Malayalam films in general.

Nayattu: movement, density and night lighting
Nayattu is the film Khalid uses to show his approach at its most visible. He describes it as packed with movement and numerous frames, so the camera keeps shifting and the image carries a lot of information at once.
He singles out a night-time sequence that follows the landscape around three officers on the run. For that sequence, he says he used extensive lighting so the environment would look real. The point is not stylisation for its own sake; the lighting is there to make a dangerous, exposed situation feel physically believable.

Nayattu compared with Joji
The interview draws a contrast between Nayattu and Joji, another film Khalid shot. According to Khalid, the subject matter dictated the difference between them. The table below sets out what the source reports for each film.

Neither approach is presented as the better one. Khalid’s position is that the right style depends on what the story needs, and that is the fairest way to read the comparison.

A self-taught approach to lighting
Khalid describes himself as self-taught. He says he learnt largely by watching other people’s films, and he does not claim a single signature look. “I don’t have a particular style, and I learnt from watching other people’s films,” he said. “There is a basic aesthetic for lighting a scene, which I follow and adapt to the narrative.”
That gives a useful way to read his work. The underlying lighting discipline stays fairly constant, while the choices of movement, density and mood change with each script. It is a consistent method rather than a consistent look.

Working with limited resources
On Sudani From Nigeria, Khalid describes a shoot with very modest means. “I shot the film with very little equipment,” he said. “We didn’t have much money and we didn’t know how the film would do.” The remark fits his broader emphasis on story over spectacle: a film with little equipment still has to work through its characters and its feel.

The interview places Khalid’s start in television serials in 2000. It identifies Traffic (2010) as his first film. The films it lists as connected with his cinematography are Traffic, Maheshinte Prathikaram, Ee Ma Yau, Sudani From Nigeria, Kumbalangi Nights, Virus, Nayattu and Joji. These biographical details come from Khalid’s account in that interview and have not been independently checked against other records.

Timeline of the Nayattu and Joji period
- 2019: Much of Nayattu was shot.
- COVID-era lockdown: The shoot was interrupted. Khalid then moved on to Joji.
- April 8, 2021: Nayattu received a limited theatrical release, according to the 2021 Scroll.in report, and later moved to Netflix.
- April 2021: Joji premiered directly on Amazon Prime Video, according to the same report.
- May 30, 2021: The Scroll.in interview was published.
Those release details describe what was reported in 2021. They are not a guide to where the films can be watched today. Streaming catalogues change, and anyone looking for current availability should check the platforms directly.
What the interview establishes, and what it does not
The interview gives a clear, first-person account of how one cinematographer thinks about his craft: that images matter but do not carry a film alone, that the feel of the story and memorable characters do the lasting work, and that style should follow subject matter. It also gives specific production details about Nayattu, Joji and Sudani From Nigeria.
It does not provide audience data, industry-wide measurements or a comparative survey of Malayalam cinema. Readers should treat Khalid’s remarks as the perspective of one working cinematographer, which is valuable precisely because it comes from inside the process.
Read as a craft statement, the interview’s message is that the aesthetic and the emotional connection are inseparable. A striking frame earns attention, but the story and its characters are what viewers take home.
