Collider reported that Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning surpassed the worldwide gross of Oblivion, the 2013 science-fiction film directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Tom Cruise. Collider put Oblivion‘s worldwide total at just under $288 million. That figure has not been confirmed against a primary box-office database, so read it as Collider’s reported number rather than a verified total.
What the headline is actually claiming
The headline links two films through one shared name, Tom Cruise, and one shared director, Joseph Kosinski. The director link does not hold for the franchise entry. Variety’s November 12, 2024 report on the title announcement names Christopher McQuarrie as director and co-writer, with Cruise and McQuarrie as producers. Kosinski is not among those credits. The table below separates each part of the headline from what the sources support.
| Headline element | What the sources establish | Source |
|---|---|---|
| “Tom Cruise’s” film | Cruise stars in Oblivion as Jack Harper, a repairman on an abandoned Earth in 2077. He also produced and starred in the Mission: Impossible series. | Tom’s Guide, June 5, 2025; Variety, November 12, 2024 |
| “Joseph Kosinski” hit | Kosinski directed Oblivion (2013). He is not named in the reported credits for The Final Reckoning. | Tom’s Guide, June 5, 2025; Variety, November 12, 2024 |
| “Sends … into ‘Oblivion'” | Collider reported that The Final Reckoning surpassed Oblivion‘s worldwide gross, which Collider put at just under $288 million. | Collider (the full article could not be checked; figure not verified against a primary source) |
In short, the headline compares earnings. It does not describe a shared story, cast member or creative team beyond Cruise.
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning: title and schedule
The eighth film in the series was first planned under the working name Dead Reckoning Part Two. Variety reported on November 12, 2024 that The Final Reckoning had become the official title. The same report listed a May 23, 2025 release date. That date was part of a 2024 schedule announcement; it is a historical record, not a current scheduling claim.
