The original filmed ending of National Lampoon’s Vacation sent the Griswolds to park owner Roy Walley’s estate—not into Walley World. In cast recollections, Clark breaks in with a BB gun and demands entertainment; police arrive, and Walley lets the family go. Director Harold Ramis said test audiences fell quiet when the family failed to reach its promised destination, prompting a replacement finale in which Clark takes over the park.
What happened in the original ending?
Dana Barron and Anthony Michael Hall described the filmed finale in a 2023 oral history. Instead of arriving at Walley World, the Griswolds went to the home of its owner, Roy Walley. Clark, carrying a BB gun, broke into the estate while Walley was having lunch with associates and demanded that they provide the family with entertainment.
Barron recalled the demand as “Roy Walley entertainment fun,” and said a photograph showed her waving from the car in a koi pond. Hall remembered Clark holding Walley and the others hostage. In their account, the scene included singing and dancing, police arriving, and Walley ultimately allowing the family to leave. These are cast recollections of the sequence, not a transcript or a complete, independently reviewed version of the footage. Yahoo Entertainment’s 2023 oral history and Dana Barron’s 2023 interview describe the original script and ending.
Barron also recalled a coda in which the family boards a plane wearing Walley World hats, then realizes the plane is headed the wrong way. Hall recalled that beat after Barron brought it up. Treat the plane gag as their recollection; the accounts do not establish that a complete copy of the original cut is publicly available.

| Payoff | The family still does not get the promised park visit; Barron recalled a wrong-direction flight gag | The family reaches the attraction, delivering the journey’s anticipated destination |
Why did the filmmakers change it?
Ramis explained that test audiences laughed through most of the film, then went quiet when the family did not reach Walley World. In DVD commentary quoted by the 2023 oral history, he said viewers had invested roughly 70–75 minutes in the trip and expected to get to the park. He asked John Hughes to write a new sequence in which the family reached Walley World and Clark hijacked it, with John Candy as the security guard. Ramis said the audience response improved dramatically at the retest.
The change gave the ending a payoff that matched the story’s long journey: the released film takes the Griswolds to their destination, even as Clark’s arrival becomes another fiasco. Ramis later said the original script “really took us nowhere” and that the rethink helped save the picture. These comments are reported from his commentary in the oral history; they describe the filmmakers’ stated reasoning, not a claim that test screenings were the only factor in the film’s success.

Was the original ending ever filmed, and can you watch it?
Cast members have described it as a filmed sequence, and Barron has discussed the original script and related images. The available accounts cited here do not establish that a complete copy of that ending is publicly accessible or included with any particular home-video edition. The evidence supports calling it an original filmed ending, but not declaring it definitively lost or promising that viewers can watch the full cut.

The American Film Institute lists National Lampoon’s Vacation as a 1983 comedy directed by Harold Ramis, written by John Hughes, and produced and distributed by Warner Bros. The film was based on Hughes’s short story “Vacation 58.” AFI notes that Hughes wrote the first screenplay draft, which Ramis and Chevy Chase later rewrote to shift the perspective toward the father. The ending change was part of shaping that journey into a comedy with a destination payoff. AFI Catalog’s film entry provides the credits and production history.
