Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In His Three Daughters, Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon play estranged sisters brought together in a cramped New York apartment as their father’s health fails. The 2024 drama turns that close-quarters caregiving into a pressure point for grief, family history and old resentments, without losing the sisters’ sharp dialogue.
What is His Three Daughters about?
Rachel, Christina and Katie reunite to care for their ailing father during his final days. Netflix describes them as estranged sisters; the apartment they share makes the family’s practical responsibilities and unresolved tensions hard to keep apart. Netflix Tudum calls the film “a story of pre-mourning,” a description of its focus on anticipatory grief rather than a statement attributed to the filmmakers or cast.
Azazel Jacobs wrote, directed and edited the film. Its contained setting keeps attention on the sisters’ relationships and on how each faces their father’s decline, rather than turning the story into a broader account of caregiving.
Who plays the three sisters?
| Character | Actor | Role in the family story |
|---|---|---|
| Rachel | Natasha Lyonne | One of the three estranged sisters navigating their father’s decline and the reunion. |
| Christina | Elizabeth Olsen | One of the three estranged sisters navigating their father’s decline and the reunion. |
| Katie | Carrie Coon | One of the three estranged sisters navigating their father’s decline and the reunion. |
The official synopsis establishes the sisters’ shared situation, while interviews offer the actors’ own approaches to their characters. Those perspectives are not fixed diagnoses of the sisters; the film’s family tensions take shape through their different responses to the same crisis.

How did the actors approach their characters?
Natasha Lyonne as Rachel
Lyonne told Netflix Tudum that Jacobs wrote Rachel with her in mind. She said she chose to lean into Rachel’s smoking and consider what it meant for the character. That is Lyonne’s account of her performance choice, rather than a definitive explanation of Rachel from the film’s official synopsis.
Elizabeth Olsen as Christina
Olsen recalled initially thinking Jacobs might see her as Katie. She said they discussed his view of her as Christina: a people pleaser and mediator. This gives a glimpse of how Olsen and Jacobs talked about the role, not a label that exhausts Christina’s character.

Carrie Coon as Katie

The available interview details do not provide an equivalent character interpretation from Coon, so it is more useful to understand Katie through her place in the family setup and the film’s shared caregiving situation than to assign her an unsupported personality summary.
What was production like for the cast?
Olsen said the cast rehearsed for a week. She described the production as low-budget and said the actors used apartments in the building where they filmed instead of trailers. Coon recalled sharing a one-bedroom apartment with Olsen as a green room.
