There is no official, complete winner list for every Chunin Exam across Naruto and Boruto. In the original Naruto finals documented by the NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE, Naruto defeats Neji, Temari’s match with Shikamaru ends when Shikamaru admits defeat, and the Sasuke–Gaara match is interrupted before either can win. The official synopsis for Boruto episode 61 names its three-person finalists but does not state a champion.
Documented results from the original Naruto Chunin Exam finals
The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE anniversary retrospective records three relevant final-round developments. These are match outcomes, not a complete ranking of everyone who entered the exam.

Naruto defeats Neji
Naruto beats Neji in their final-round match. The official retrospective describes the decisive attack this way: “As if seeking to prove this fact, Naruto puts his all into a final blow that wins him the match.” This is the clearest completed finals victory in the documented results.
Shikamaru concedes to Temari
Temari and Shikamaru’s match ends with Shikamaru admitting defeat. That makes Temari the match winner, even though the outcome does not prevent Shikamaru from being promoted later.
#1 Best Overall
- Based on a popular manga and video game, the Cartoon Network anime series NARUTO follows the adventures of a 12-year-old orphan boy who dreams of becoming his village's number-one ninja. Unfortunately, Naruto is endowed with an evil spirit that entered his body at birth and that he must learn to tame before he can fulfill his ninja destiny. This seventh volume continues Naruto's action-packed expl
Sasuke and Gaara never finish
Sasuke begins the anticipated match against Gaara, but the Chunin Exams are called off before the fight can conclude. Neither Sasuke nor Gaara is established as the winner of that interrupted match by the official retrospective.
Match winner and chunin promotion are different outcomes
A Chunin Exam fight can have a winner without that person being the only promotion decision, and a competitor can be promoted despite losing a match. The official Shikamaru column describes him carrying out missions as a chunin, while the anniversary retrospective records that he admitted defeat against Temari.
- Match result: who wins or loses a particular fight.
- Promotion decision: who exam officials judge ready to serve as a chunin.
- Interrupted result: a fight stopped before a winner is established.
Therefore, “Who won the Chunin Exams?” cannot be answered accurately by treating every promoted character as a tournament-match winner.
What the later Boruto exam synopsis confirms
The official synopsis for Boruto episode 61 says the final battle of that Chunin Exam is a battle royal involving Boruto Uzumaki, Sarada Uchiha and Shinki. It identifies the contest as a fight to determine the champion, but the synopsis does not state who wins.
Rank #2
- MC - Naruto Chunin Exam Sprint
Because that source gives no outcome, it does not establish Boruto, Sarada or Shinki as the champion, nor does it establish a disqualification as the reason for any result. The battle-royal format also differs from the individual matches described in the original Naruto retrospective.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a franchise-wide “all winners” list is not established here
The official materials available for these documented results are an anniversary retrospective and an episode synopsis, not a complete canon index covering every Chunin Exam in the Naruto franchise. They support the selected outcomes above but do not establish an exhaustive roster for every exam, adaptation or later arc.
A genuinely complete list would need exam-by-exam coverage across the manga, Naruto, Naruto Shippuden and Boruto continuity, with each entry labeled as a completed match win, overall champion, promotion decision, interruption or disqualification. The evidence summarized here does not provide that full cross-franchise accounting.
Quick Recap
Confirmed takeaways
- Naruto defeats Neji in the documented original finals match.
- Temari wins the match in which Shikamaru admits defeat.
- Shikamaru later serves as a chunin, showing that promotion is separate from a match win.
- Sasuke versus Gaara is called off before completion, so neither is established as its winner.
- The Boruto episode 61 synopsis names Boruto, Sarada and Shinki in a three-person final but does not name its champion.
- The available official sources do not establish every Chunin Exam winner across the franchise.
